The Overboard Ceremony

Tell please?

First time was when we were doing arrival sec checks. I had done one fast-flow, the person had a rockslam and I had ringed it and passed it to the Qual Sec for handling, which was what we were to do. Hubbard saw this and started screaming at me, telling me I was in Treason. I stood up to him and told him I was NOT in Treason and that I had done EXACTLY as he has instructed the Qual Sec to deal with these matters. He backed down and said I was in Liability. I told him I was not in Liability. He said ok. Instead he had the Qual Sec handcuffed to the bulkhead in the tweendecks.

Second time I was top auditor, he picked up a folder and said a list was incomplete. I told him it was, according to his bulletin. His Aides were aghast! He asked which bulletin, so I showed him. He said the bulletin was written by Jenny Edmonds and he had never seen it. He ordered about 100 tapes on listing to be added to the SHSBC level 3 checksheet.

Third time was when I was 1st Mate. He called me to his cabin and started screaming at me about some small matter. I told him not to shout at me as I had done nothing wrong. He accused me of betraying his instructions, so I showed him his own handwritten instructions which had been followed exactly. Again, he backed down and apologised.

The result was that I was transferred to the missionaire unit and a couple of days later sent to the UK.

You have to realise that most bullies are cowards. I had known Hubbard for a long time and was not going to take any of his rubbish.

Interesting - thank you.

At Int there was overboarding in the lake. I was terrified it would happen to me too. This "habit" came in waves. When we were really bad, I mean just unbelievably and could-not-go-lower type, then came the overboarding threat. Once the whole Qual was thown in. One time one of the execs for Comps, Porzia got thrown in. I was not there, but I can never forget her coming back in her wet clothes, shivering, hair all wet in the cold evening. She "knew" she deserved it and tried to not blame anyone at the time. Later on of course her staff had it.

One time I think poor Pene Mace got thrown in (she was one of the sweetest person) and someone else had to jump in to get her out of the water. She was seriously overweight and had other medical problems as well.

Did you know that Pene Mace played women's cricket for Australia?

I remember her from St Hill.

I suspect it's the way they weed out people who aren't going to be able to withstand the rigours and horrors of battle.

These days most military outfits have policies against hazing, but it still happens. My point was more that young men in particular love that kind of stupidity. Many sports teams have similar rituals.

But it should always be voluntary. It's horrible that overboarding was forced on anyone, especially older grownups and juveniles who have no appreciation for crazy antics.

You are absolutely right.

I have a vague recollection of hearing (in the mid-70's) that misbehaving staff and students were treated to "keelhauling," which was explained that you were thrown overboard, tied up and tied to the ship, while the ship was moving, and that you would be dragged behind the ship. I had never heard of that before, and it freaked me out that Ron would direct this sort of thing. Was that actually done, or was that an exaggeration of the overboarding?

I've just finished a book called "Horror in the East" which was based on a BBC series of the same name. It explored why the Japanese treated their POWs in WWI very well but turned into absolute monsters in WWII. The difference was the basic military training changed radically - new recruits were systematically brutalized and forced to literally beat the crap out of each other. The parallels with what I've read on this thread and others are frightening - seems to me the average SO recruit is taught from Day One to treat EVERYBODY as an enemy and brutalize them accordingly. Just makes me more determined to put the whole sick animal called Co$ out of its collective misery. Thanks very much for sharing your stories, DS - keep 'em coming please.

Yes, well, it's obvious this is the right handling for having a PC R/S. Cuff the Qual sec to the bulkhead.

I was "thrown overboard" once- at the "PAC BASE" .
It was about 3 AM and I felt that for some reason I needed to go to the basement tunnels under ASHO. There I found many hundreds of gallons of water flooding their Dissem "back lines", that is, all the files, letters to be answered etc.
I found the source of the flood to be a sump pump (which had recently been installed incorrectly it later turned out) which was not running as it should have been. I quickly studied the situation and managed to get the pump running, which in turned saved ASHO's Div-2 from a very devastating further flood.
When the "engineers" finally got there hours later they found that the pump was still running and that it was not rated for continual use.
It was determined that I should be thrown overboard for this unconscionable sin of leaving the pump running. (I was not an "engineer"and this had nothing to do with my "hat" I just felt there was something wrong in the tunnels!!!)
So anyway, since we were in L.A. and not on a ship,a bunch of guys threw me down an elevator shaft that had about 4 feet of standing water at the bottom (I guess the "engineers" figured it was supposed to be there or something). I actually laughed my ass off as I stood in the water thinking about the absolute magnitude of the injustice being perpetrated! :roflmao: crummy

No good deed goes unpunished. And that's about the the way the Hubbo justice system works. Very Logical of course.:D

I abhor the idea of non-consenting overboards, or of minors and people who can't swim. The practice should be fun. It's like any standard hazing at a decent maritime academy.

That's only because they're not allowed to be lined up along a cliff, and every 10th one pushed over.

The practice of keelhauling is that the victim is tied to a rope which is wrapped around the entire vessel. The rope is then pulled dragging the victim down the side of the boat, into the water, UNDER THE KEEL, and back up the other side.

Thus the victim had multiple problems to deal with simultaneously: holding one's breath for the entire period underwater, being unable to swim and speed up the process because of being tied up, and the delights of being scratched and gouged by barnacles attached to the hull.

If a person did not drown during a keel-haul, there were many fatalities from the infection of the scratches and cuts from the barnacles. Humans have always been very good at thinking up cruel things to do to each other that they would not like done to themselves.

Even elron would have drawn the line there, because he would have realized the liabilities that he would face--even in international waters.

I don't recollect any Keel Hauling.

However reading this did bring something to mind. Apart from Tunisia and Corfu, I don't really remember any of the places we stopped at.They were insignificant compared to what was going on on the ship.

So I have no idea where we were headed, but we were moving, we were at sea and there was talk of some one having gone missing.I don't know who, and it is possible that they either escaped before we left port or were quietly gotten rid of before we left port.People did disappear over night. But it was rumored they had fallen over the side of the ship.

The image that stayed in my mind was when some one said " I hope the poor buggar was dead when they hit the propellers because in this sea they would have done". It was really choppy that day.

I can't describe what went through my mind, it is too horrible.

Just a little bit more of messing with my head on the "sanest place on earth".

I have spoken to some really bad people. Criminals, etc, in interviews.

The casual cruelty of these stories almost defies imagination. How you (the victims) can speak of these things even now, shows the strength of your inner selves. That Bastard Elron may have caused deep and painful scars, but he never broke your Spirits. (Not for lack of trying on his part)

For that, you are more than Survivors. You are heros.

I feel many emotions reading these stories. But nothing more than the complete & utter contempt for that sick Bastard, Elron.

I think it is fair to say that I hate him. I hate what he influenced others to do. I never knew the Pig. And it feels odd to hate someone I never knew.

But what he did, what is continued to be done in his name....

I am now without words.........
