Reads like a chapter from Lord of the Flies.
I stood up to Hubbard on 3 occasions and each time he backed down.

Tell please?
First time was when we were doing arrival sec checks. I had done one fast-flow, the person had a rockslam and I had ringed it and passed it to the Qual Sec for handling, which was what we were to do. Hubbard saw this and started screaming at me, telling me I was in Treason. I stood up to him and told him I was NOT in Treason and that I had done EXACTLY as he has instructed the Qual Sec to deal with these matters. He backed down and said I was in Liability. I told him I was not in Liability. He said ok. Instead he had the Qual Sec handcuffed to the bulkhead in the tweendecks.
Second time I was top auditor, he picked up a folder and said a list was incomplete. I told him it was, according to his bulletin. His Aides were aghast! He asked which bulletin, so I showed him. He said the bulletin was written by Jenny Edmonds and he had never seen it. He ordered about 100 tapes on listing to be added to the SHSBC level 3 checksheet.
Third time was when I was 1st Mate. He called me to his cabin and started screaming at me about some small matter. I told him not to shout at me as I had done nothing wrong. He accused me of betraying his instructions, so I showed him his own handwritten instructions which had been followed exactly. Again, he backed down and apologised.
The result was that I was transferred to the missionaire unit and a couple of days later sent to the UK.
You have to realise that most bullies are cowards. I had known Hubbard for a long time and was not going to take any of his rubbish.

At Int there was overboarding in the lake. I was terrified it would happen to me too. This "habit" came in waves. When we were really bad, I mean just unbelievably and could-not-go-lower type, then came the overboarding threat. Once the whole Qual was thown in. One time one of the execs for Comps, Porzia got thrown in. I was not there, but I can never forget her coming back in her wet clothes, shivering, hair all wet in the cold evening. She "knew" she deserved it and tried to not blame anyone at the time. Later on of course her staff had it.
One time I think poor Pene Mace got thrown in (she was one of the sweetest person) and someone else had to jump in to get her out of the water. She was seriously overweight and had other medical problems as well.
I suspect it's the way they weed out people who aren't going to be able to withstand the rigours and horrors of battle.
These days most military outfits have policies against hazing, but it still happens. My point was more that young men in particular love that kind of stupidity. Many sports teams have similar rituals.
But it should always be voluntary. It's horrible that overboarding was forced on anyone, especially older grownups and juveniles who have no appreciation for crazy antics.

crummyI abhor the idea of non-consenting overboards, or of minors and people who can't swim. The practice should be fun. It's like any standard hazing at a decent maritime academy.
I have a vague recollection of hearing (in the mid-70's) that misbehaving staff and students were treated to "keelhauling," which was explained that you were thrown overboard, tied up and tied to the ship, while the ship was moving, and that you would be dragged behind the ship. I had never heard of that before, and it freaked me out that Ron would direct this sort of thing. Was that actually done, or was that an exaggeration of the overboarding?

I don't recollect any Keel Hauling.
However reading this did bring something to mind. Apart from Tunisia and Corfu, I don't really remember any of the places we stopped at.They were insignificant compared to what was going on on the ship.
So I have no idea where we were headed, but we were moving, we were at sea and there was talk of some one having gone missing.I don't know who, and it is possible that they either escaped before we left port or were quietly gotten rid of before we left port.People did disappear over night. But it was rumored they had fallen over the side of the ship.
The image that stayed in my mind was when some one said " I hope the poor buggar was dead when they hit the propellers because in this sea they would have done". It was really choppy that day.
I can't describe what went through my mind, it is too horrible.
Just a little bit more of messing with my head on the "sanest place on earth".
