Okay, fess up. Who here stood there, night after night and clapped -applauded LRH's picture and thought to yourself "what the hell am I doing?" or some such thought?

What was your thinking at the time? How does it seem now looking back?

I had to decide that I would think of every good session I had and all the really good wins I had that would justify my action of engaging in what now seems to be cultish worship. Until that point, I felt like I was doing it so I would not be noticed for not doing so. I have to laugh now.

L RON HUBBARD

The trick was to ease your way to the back of the room, while clapping, just to make sure you were seen to be clapping.:wink2: :happydance:

Once at the back you could nip out and away from the phony applause.

I would clap without my hands actually touching. It passed the visual test and allowed me to keep my integrity to only clap when I meant it. :coolwink:

I clapped like a bastard. Hipped and hoorayed, too. While it did seem odd to me, I saw it as largely a group reinforcement, rather than a hero worship thing. I was very young, and so it wasn't far-fetched for me to consider an older man who had written voluminously on a subject I found enlightening to be worth celebrating, but I got tired of it. Kind of like formations in the military, and saluting your "superior" officer. Organizational reinforcement. What I didn't like was being called out to express a "win". Occasionally I'd have something I thought was worth sharing, but for the most part, I felt that was invasive.

At the time I was happy to clap once at the beginning of an event and once at the end, but all those times inbetween...WTF?! :confused2:

But then events always reminded me of Nuremberg rallies or group implants, the main difference being that the former always started on time. :eyeroll:

At first I interpreted it to mean that all these other people who have been doing Scientology for so long must really love this guy. Wow, I'll have what they're having.
Now I just realise that it's just one of so many oddities to be found in Scientology.

Where did that practice of 3 cheers for LRH start? Is that another of DM's great achievements?

I grew up in an East European country, so it was even more painful.

We had fresh memories of the Communist gatherings, with the thunderous ovations and applauses for our great party leaders ...

When Scientology started in Hungary (a few missions were established), no such applauses were done for that reason.

But then the Sea Org base got established, and then it was enforced on the events.

You should have seen the faces of the public on the first of these "improved" events :)

I got intercepted on my way out the door by the capt aola one night at graduation when I was seen not clapping, and in fact sitting down through the hip hips....

Seems I'm not a team player anywhere.

Was in 2000, I think, and she was a pleasant blond woman, her name escapes me. But I could sense her frustration that a public could just say "I have to be somewhere in a few minutes", and just walk away.

After I realized it was BS, I stopped clapping and doing the pogo stick, stand up, sit down thing. It reminded me of the Nazi torch rallys, the only thing missing was the 'zeig heil' salute, but I think the 'hip hip hooray' was the politically more correct substitute. Makes me think of the song "Cult of Personality" by Living Color. Matter of fact, come to think of it, Cult of Personality should probably be one of the theme songs that are played at protest rallys.

Yes.

As much as I like LRH, it didnt do him any good to be worshiped.
