The last time I was in Clearwater was in the 80s when my retired-to-Florida father took me on an car tour through downtown Clearwater, with the weird cult being the attraction. I had no idea Scientology had colonized a town. I vaguely remember that he explained that while they use a cross as their symbol, it doesn't represent the crucifixion but is more for cover.
Most towns of a similar size were bustling at the time, with seniors on their way to the $3 early-bird specials, the Piggly Wiggly and Walmart/K-mart. Downtown Clearwater was completely deserted and eerie.
Anonycat says it was always that way. I didn't know that.
I wonder how much Cruise's move has to do with a shift in the atmosphere in Hollywood where he senses that everybody is talking about him and his cult behind his back. Before he was able to pretend that when he was "disseminating" to Spielberg and others, that they were taking him seriously and now, not so much.
Tom Cruise isn't fake at all, because he's so very sincere and certain. And that's what's scary. If while in Florida, Tom confines his socializing to successful business owners and the other elites of his cult, I bet he's going to find that even more boring after a while. Tom would be better off in living in France or some place where he could isolate himself more from native speakers of English and the reality that Scientology is collapsing as it becomes more transparent -- clear, if you will.
