Tom Feher was a New York org staff member and public person in the '70's and 80's and then came out to PAC and was public there.

Tom heard that I was declared some years ago and I told him so when he called. He was a little surprised, but he told me he would never disconnect from me, and he never did.
I knew that he made his living with Scientologists so I never made a big deal out of it, but we would stay in touch. I think 3-4 years ago was the last time we talked.

My favorite song of his was "Even the Bad Guys are Good" and it was a really wonderful song about how we generally are misunderstanding others when we accuse them of bad intentions. There was some hassle from someone he got for it, and was told not to sing it again!

Looking him up on the net, I also found that he was a member of the 60's group, "The Left Banke" (Don't Walk Away, Renee).

I just got a message from his wife that he passed away.

I’m still somewhat in shock and disbelief that Tom Thomas Leo Feher has moved on...
He left for a hike up Mt. Wilson yesterday, Sunday Aug. 5th, determined to reach the top. And even though he was warned against going it alone, considering his history with heart failure, there was never any stopping Tom when he set his mind to something. We can only hope he had made it to the summit and was on his way back down when his heart stopped beating. At least his last breath was taken out amongst the trees and sky, which is exactly how he would’ve wanted it.

The ultimate Music Man, Tom’s first and greatest love was music, rivaled only by his love for his kids - all 5 of them: Christopher, Robin, April, Jeff and Michael-Angelo!

It’s hard to believe that such a huge Force and Presence is suddenly gone. And I don’t really believe that. I believe he’s just gone on to the next phase of his journey. But that doesn’t do much to soothe my own heart, which is heavy with sorrow today.

Tom touched so many lives, and was and still is, loved greatly by so many.

Please feel free to share any thoughts, stories, songs, remembrances here...

I will post plans for a Celebration of his Life. Soon.

There’s a place in every heart where kindness lives.
It’s been there right from the start. I promise this:
You will find in every man a trace of brotherhood:
Even the bad guys are good.
Men have fought with one another day after day.
Simple thoughts like “help your brother” easily slip away.
Ah, but there’s a fact of life that needs to be understood:
Even the bad guys are good.
Under the cloak of darkness shines a tiny light,
Sometimes hard to find, so distant in the night.
Find that light, and help it grow
Into a mighty golden glow
Shining on all the world you know!
Make it grow…for…
There’s a place in every heart where kindness lives.
It’s been there right from the start. I promise this:
You will find in every man a trace of brotherhood:
Even the bad guys,
The meanest of mad guys –
Behind those sad lies,
The bad guys are good.

Tom’s work with The Left Banke included compositions of a number of songs on their albums.

There is a nice article about Tom, with more details on his activities and career. He also went professionally by the name Tom Fair. He was considered the co-founder of the 1960s baroque style of rock and roll,

“He could have been rich and famous,” Gae said. “But those were never his goals. He would rather give his art away free.”

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Feher performed in New York’s Central Park to raise awareness about environmental issues. He also published his own environmental newsletter.

He moved to the West Coast in the mid-1980s where he founded the Tom Fair School of Music in Los Angeles. He continued to teach music for three decades.”

No disrespect to Tom, but it doesn't appear he was in The Left Banke when they did "Walk Away Renee." He joined later.

I realized that. He may have been friends with the author at the time it was written. Not knowing Tom personally, it's a way to remember him. And to hear a beautiful rendition of the song, listen to Linda Ronstadt's version on her "Duets" album, singing with Ann Savoy.

That's as far as I was able to get.

Sorry.

Yes, that appears to be true.

“For a time, Tom served as a director of public information at the Church of Scientology.

“My father got involved with Scientology because of the creed they promoted, that anyone can rise and can live in a world without war and insanity,” Robin said. “He really was a man who believed people should be free and un-oppressed.”

“Tom was about being creative, and for people not to lose their childhood, and to continue to search for fun,” Gae said. “He believed not to take anything too seriously.”

Just to make it clear - Tom was a VERY devoted Scientologist until the end. He disconnected from his daughter, April, who had majorly helped and supported him over the years. It caused her terrible heartache that she was never able to see him again after his abrupt disconnection. How anyone could disconnect from such a beautiful, kind, compassionate daughter is beyond my level of understanding.
