But Pixie! Then we might never have met...:confused2:

Otherwise, RIGHT ON!:goodposting:

I know, This Is It just reminded me of that and I do remind myself of this too as much as I can. As I said, none of us would have met, and good things did come out of it as do all positive things eventually come from negative. Yes, I understand what you're saying.. oh I'm all emotional now!! :bigcry:

Things, read, heard and/or studied

Hey, guys (non gender meaning, please),

I've had a go at all the tapes, books and stuff mentioned in this thread - many X over in most cases. Also the SHSBC tapes (yes, all 400plus of them) the red vols - but very little green on white.

Been a while, but I'm willing to kick it around.

Also Bjorkist and I have stuff to work on.

I'm hoping to learn and share what I (think) I've learned.

I'll try to put up a trial baloon post sorta like a "starter yeast" tomorrow, if not tonight - just to get fermentation going! Any ideas or guidance will be considered and appreciated.

It would be helpful for all to find and read:

PROCEMIUN, EPISTLE DEDICATORY, PREFACE AND PLAN OF THE INSTAURATIO MAGNA, ETC, by Francis Bacon

I have it in "The Harvard Classics" series which are probably on the web somewhere.

No, I'm not kidding... this is good stuff. Vital to the discussion, IMHO.

No "smilies" here - this is business.

If you are going to bring Francis Bacon into this, it's definitely business, Mister. I think you should quote him. It would do my heart good.

OK - although from memory...

Francis bacon wrote:

"...but it is the empty things that are vast-
things solid are much contracted
and lie in little room."

More to follow.

Anyone find the refrences?

Anyone try?

Not a typo,

Paul,

Thanks for the post.

"Procemium" - looking at vol 39 of The Harvard Classics - Famous Prefaces c1910 edition - the C and E are printed as one character, which I'm not familar with. Maybe archaic, now. Goes like this:

FRANCIS OF VERULAM REASONED THUS WITH HIMSELF,

And Judged it to be for the Interest of the present and Future Generations That They Should be Made Acquainted with His Thoughts

"wall of text" then follows - about two pages.

An editors note quoted below:

"A sketch of Bacon's life will be found prefixed to his "essays" in another volume of the Harvard Classics. His "Instauratio Magna" or "Great Renewal," the great work by which he hoped to create a scientific revolution and deliver mankind from Aristotelianism, was left far from complete; but the natire of his sceme and the scale on which it was planned are indicated in these Prefaces, which are typical both of the man and of the age in which he lived."

Hubbard references Francis Bacon early on, as I recall, along with others. This set of "classics" was very in vouge for his generation. I know, because my father shared Hubbard's birth year.

Does anyone else find this interesting?

The two pages are visible via Google books.

I find it a struggle to understand what he is saying. Unless someone makes a very good case for grokking it, I'll pass.

Well, I'd consider Francis Bacon extraordinary in his time, but I think he's been eclipsed by modern thinkers on every front. I find it amazing that people in his time, with no access to the internet, or concept of such, without access to advanced mathmatics (beyond calculus) or physics, stuck in an era of alchemy, crushed towards ignorance by fundamentalist christians, etc.: I find his ability to POINT THE WAY exceptional. However, that has happened. People have walked the paths he dreamed. We stand on the shoulders of giants, and all that. The only time I think it would be valuable to follow his reasoning, is if you doubt the value of naturalist thought.

WORD

Where I live currently Hitler is sometimes referred to as a "Great Leader". In terms of power he may have been. But the word "great" obviously has nuances of meaning that make most westerners censor it out so as not to insinuate any approval when we refer to him. The people here do not speak English as a first language so they do not understand nuances, and unfortunately the horror of the holocaust seems not to be important in their education.
Naturally it rattles expats to hear the "great leader" phrase.

The word "brilliant" also has nuances of meaning that are positive but as Alanzo has pointed out lrh was so horrible
that "brilliant" seems laughable to me, considered alongside all the other adjectives needed to describe his throughly evil personality.
I have seen people who as far as I know were/are not evil
like lrh but who do have that fast snappy thinking on the hop thing.
They don't want to wait for anything, they sometimes look very clever, and perhaps they are, because they don't wait 2 seconds for slow thinking to get in the way of the plans and solutions that fire out of them. My unproven theory is that this is a very limited type of cleverness and others have to do the real work and clean up the mess later.
There is plenty of evidence to show that a lot of what came out of ron's mouth was bullshit and he actually despised people for believing some of the crap he made up. Other stuff he should have despised himself for believing.
Another aspect of this is that the man who was breaking in broncos when he was 3 yrs old and curing himself of blindness and other ailments incurred during his brave wartime service kept telling people over and over and over
"I am Brilliant"
"I am Brilliant'
"I am Brilliant"
Those that were not there with Brilliant Layfayette Ron Hubbard were told by churchies
"Ron is Brilliant"
"Ron is Brilliant"
"Ron is Brilliant"
A nice word isn't it. It really does roll of the tongue and makes you think of a bright shining sun.
Brilliant
What was I reading about hypnosis?

Thank you. If you like you can be my sistah. Not my girlfriend because I'm gay. When you are of a certain age you can be my faghag but by definition you will have some other gay friends too. There is the "Honorary FagHag"
that can be awarded in special circumstances and pursuant to the requirement of having displayed certain behaviour such as "Often Hanging Around With Queers".
We don't say "hanging out" with... because it is too hip to convey the slightly regal associations......jesus i better stop there..I'm not even on drugs or anything..see the effect y' hav on people.

Trust the Psi Corps.
There is a policy or bulletin on 'Genius' in which lrh clearly tries to imply that he fits the category. In hindsight, he had no altruism, was solely interested in number one, and got a great kick of out the numbers of people gullible enough to fall for cunning deceit.

Hitler was actually a great leader in many respects but he was so inhumane and evil that it was all for nothing. Not just that, but the damage he did so far outweighed anything he accomplished that in some parts of the world, giving him even the slightest bit of props as I did above would earn censure.

None of the answers quite fit.

Decent sci fi writer, especially when compared to many others of his era
Reasonably good synthesist of materials
Had some great ideas, and frequently knew good ideas when he saw them
Was able to get people to work with him, which says he had more charisma than he's credited for

Pity about the paranoia

Other than that, human. The hero of his own drama as most of us are.

Can I be an honorary faghag? I'm "of a certain age." Which certain, I'm not saying.
