Why People Believe that (Scientology and L Ron Hubbard’s) Bullshit is Actually Profound.

The linked post is long, thorough, well-written and excerpted, and quite frankly teased, only briefly below.

Anyone who has read “Dianetics”, let alone the material which makes up ‘advanced’ Scientology courses, will have come across many passages that make them ask, “what is that supposed to mean“?

This leads to the question of why people read nonsense and ascribe deep meaning to such passages – even when they cannot actually articulate what that meaning is?

There are several explanations for this. This paper describes an experiment which possibly provides another. It not only demonstrates how some people uncritically ascribe meaning to a nonsense passage which ‘sounds profound’, but also provides a means of identifying individuals who are most vulnerable to this kind of confusion.

Except practically everything wrong in the world today can actually be traced back to a conspiracy of one sort or another.

Because he was a good bullshitter... Gotta admit that much

People want to believe egotheiistic Peter pan talk

Would you rather think you are mortal meat or masters of the universe?

But yeah if you put any thought into it he was peddling pseudoscience to uneducated layman

Think it through and it makes no sense

Other problem is it is confidential so there's always the excuse to think oh maybe it works I just have to learn the secrets

Thankfully they're online for those that aren't scared to google it

That sums it all up pretty well, that sentence right there. He appealed to people's ego.

The ones that rise to the top are the egomaniacs, like DM and his BFF TC.

Thanks for bringing this blog post and very interesting paper to our attention.

Good point. Reading the paper reminded me of a "win" I had on the Briefing Course at Flag, a realization that I did not really understand what Hubbard was talking about unless I was exterior. (Read "dissociated".)

I realize now that Hubbard used all kinds of study tricks to ensure that our BS meter wouldn't go off on him, both in his written and spoken material. For example, if you go blank, go back and find your misunderstood word(s.) What a Superhumanitarian!

I challenge the premise of the article that the subject matter in question is BS.

Just because we are unable to comprehend higher concepts than the awareness level we are in, which someone is attempting to express through a crude primitive medium such as speech or the written word does not make it less valid.

LRH could remember what he had for breakfast trillions of years ago and he could conduct telepathic conversations with non-corporeal beings who were at war with the physical universe.

Just keep reading and it will all make sense in time.

Maybe Communicator I/C would know, but there was a post about an academic article about scientology. I don't know if anyone managed to access it, but would be very interested to read the article....

In the OP's link https://scicrit.wordpress.com/2016/0...und/#more-6330

is this link:

and this link explaining it:

by clicking on the "Reionize Electrions" button at the top of this link: http://sebpearce.com/bullshit/, do it several times,

why it totally falls in line with Shermanspeak aka Hubbardspeak.

oh, forgot to add, this guy gets it:
"After sitting through hours of New Age rhetoric, I decided to have a crack at writing code to generate it automatically and speed things up a bit. I cobbled together a list of New Age buzzwords and cliché sentence patterns and this is the result."
