I'm also researching atheism for this piece I am trying to write and those people are even crabbier. It is like yikes! What got your underwear in a bind?

RESEARCHER
Hi! I am researching freedom and would like to know
how much you charge for total freedom and when
I can meet a person who has achieved total freedom.

SCIENTOLOGIST
(smiling much)
I am so happy you are reaching for freedom. I would
love to help you and answer all your questions!

-----------------a few minutes later---------------

ANOTHER SCIENTOLOGIST
Who was that Wog?

SCIENTOLOGIST
A total SP. Don't worry, I told them an Acceptable Truth
and they bought my Shore Story...and now I am going
to do the Greatest Good for the Greatest Number of Dynamics
and I am going to Fair Game them!

ANOTHER SCIENTOLOGIST
Wow! What a huge Win!

In the course of my study I've come to realize everyone is equally fanatical without real reason for such strong bias. I mean, atheists are crazy, let me tell you but they think they are the only rational, sane ones left on the planet. I posted (didn't tell them it was research to keep their guard down) in a forum I believe in spirits bc of this, this and this. Their SOLE response was basically ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, WITHOUT A DOUBT, ANYBODY!!! that claims to see spirits is either making it up or crazy. Nothing more to it. Some relented and said it could be memories that were triggered in the subconscious mind. I replied, "well what about ghosts sightings when multiple sources report the same thing without prior knowledge of those events? How is that a work of the subconscious?" ALL of them are just making it up for attention or they are crazy. On separate occasions, They are ALL going crazy at that precise moment in time, at the exact same location, and they all see the exact same thing? YEP!!! That's the dumbest shit I ever heard. They rely heavily on fluctuating statics/ratios to disprove the existence of God and psychics but then they readily favor and support those odds. Give me a break. But that's just life so I don't let it get to me.

I really like that!

Your idea is worthy of an entire thread by itself.

The same situation viewed from many, many, many different perspectives (realities) in Roshomon style.

Is that part of your research paper too?

I found that they were a very hostile crowd for no real reason. I just posted a question and they acted like that was forbidden. They said they wanted to save me and everything.

What is you research paper title -or scope?

Actually I'm curious about what *size* it will be too....it sounds like you are writing something substantial...how many words/pages do you have to write?

I've found the same thing Lashonda . . . not sure why that is, but people cling to their religious beliefs (or lack thereof) and love to believe they *know the truth* and everyone else is just wrong. I suppose that's why cults are so insidious; they prey on that natural instinct to have some belief and to want to be right (and superior). Since I was in Scientology it's so clear to me . . .but it took my believing it 100% and then realizing how wrong I'd been to get me to that state. Our family practices Christianity -- and while I see a lot of good in it, sometimes I can hardly take the attitudes I see there. That's one of the thing I love about this forum . . . in some ways ex-Scios are some of the most "enlightened" people because they know they don't know, and they know they're fallible. Therefore they are (usually) willing to listen to each other and really communicate, and respect each others' thoughts and beliefs.

Full circle back to Socrates:

"I do not suppose that either of us knows anything really beautiful and good, I am better off than he is - for he knows nothing, and thinks that he knows. I neither know nor think that I know."
- Socrates

That being said -- I no longer have the capacity to "believe" much of anything. And I wish that I could have the security of a belief system. . . my friends who do are much happier than I am. I think that was one of the really valuable things that Scientology took away from me.

wow.I did not know that.:omg:
Really? That's what's known as the scientological-defense, "No matter how weird we are, there's always someone worse than us!"

It's a distraction technique taught in scientology's OSA/GO handling-tech when an outpoint has been exposed , "If you think that's bad, look over there!"

It is about 30 pages long - double spaced- so far. I am examining different belief structures and the effect they have on our psyche. It includes mounds of research but I was finding so much conflicting information on the web, even though I am using other sources, I just decided to try forums to get some of my ?s answered. I can't give a title or anything too specific bc a couple of people already advised me not to post personal information of myself bc it could pose as a security risk for obvious reasons.

Lily, I bet ur friends haven't been abused by their belief system as much as you have. Weigh the amount of damage that's been done. That's more than enough for one lifetime. It takes time. I can tell u though that I've lost faith countless times and I was at a place in life where I couldn't believe anything anymore either. Eventually, I started to believe again. I guess it would be like never finding the one. And then giving up hope on love. And then finding ur soul mate after that. Love is a painful process. But I think u will regain the capacity to believe just like one finds their soul mate after many bleak prospects.

Very wise words! That's a great perspective and it makes sense. Thanks, and I hope you're right :)

This paper sounds like a monster, but it sounds like you're enjoying doing it. It is a fascinating topic. Good luck :)
