Narconon Lawsuits Allege Fraud and Harm

Numerous Deaths & Injuries May Be Linked to Narconon Drug Rehabilitation Practices

At least four patients have died while under the care of Narconon in Oklahoma and many more have suffered severe injuries at numerous Narconon Drug Rehabilitation facilities around the world. Narconon International is an organization which promotes L. Ron Hubbard’s theories of substance abuse treatment.

If you’re reading this page, there’s a good chance you already know what Narconon is — and more importantly, what it is not. In any case, here’s a brief overview of this duplicitous organization. Narconon purports to be an in-patient drug rehabilitation facility offering high-quality drug intervention programs with extensive counseling services. Patients often get referred to Narconon from supposedly independent “help lines” on the Internet. Narconon tells patients, or just as often, patients’ family members, that they offer state-of-the-art drug treatments and scientifically proven methods of counseling. Some prospective clients are told that Narconon has a 70-80 % drug treatment success rate. Narconon also promises that these treatments will be administered in a safe, clean environment.

But when patients enter the treatment program, after having paid approximately $30,000.00, they discover they’ve been duped. Patients are instructed to undergo absurd “treatments” such as staring at an ashtray for several hours, or staring into another patient’s eyes without talking for extended periods of time. The centerpiece of Narconon’s program is its weeks-long sauna treatment. Patients are instructed to ingest extreme dosages of Niacin and other vitamins — well above what the FDA recommends — and sit in a sauna for very long periods of time. Patients are coerced into signing an acknowledgement that the sauna program is not, in fact, a medical treatment, but is actually an educational program. Most troublesome is the fact that there is no medical supervision of any kind for the patients.

Most of Narconon’s treatments come from Scientology. The sauna program, for example, comes from an L. Ron Hubbard book about detoxification and appears to be the same as a Scientology ritual known as the “Purification Rundown.” (Hubbard’s ideas about detoxification have not withstood scrutiny from the medical community, and have been criticized as dangerous.) Many of the books patients are instructed to read during the Narconon program are books based on Church of Scientology teachings. Narconon does not disclose to patients before entering its program that many of its programs are based on teachings from the Church of Scientology.

Narconon uses a “bait and switch” tactic to prey on families in their time of need. When families truly need to get help for a loved one suffering from drug addiction, Narconon offers pseudo-science and potentially dangerous treatment methods. Worst of all, patients and families do not find about Narconon’s methods until patients are already in the program.

If you or a loved one has been the victim of Narconon’s deceit, contact Hamilton Law to discuss your legal options.
Las Vegas attorney Ryan Hamilton represents and helps former patients of Narconon who allege in Narconon lawsuits that they have been harmed by Narconon’s misrepresentation of its drug rehabilitation program and by its methods of treating patients with non-medically approved treatment. In 2004, a California school study concluded that Narconon’s program did not reflect medically and scientifically based practices and that it offered students misleading information about drug use and abuse. The study was conducted after Narconon officials offered an anti-drug program to public schools in California, free of charge.

Mr. Hamilton currently has two federal lawsuits pending against Narconon Fresh Start, doing business as Rainbow Canyon Retreat in Caliente, Nevada and two lawsuits against Narconon Fresh Start, doing business as Rainbow Canyon Retreat in Warner Springs, California.

If you or a loved one were misrepresented by Narconon’s drug rehabilitation claims or suffered harm due to Narconon’s drug rehabilitation practices, attorneys Ryan Hamilton and Jon Little would like to speak with you. Please call Mr. Hamilton at his Las Vegas office at (702) 818-1818 or call toll free from anywhere in the country at (877) 848-1818.

I-Team: Lawsuits target Scientology rehab center in Nevada

8 News Now: I-Team - Lawsuits target Scientology rehab center in Nevada
http://www.8newsnow.com/story/25494624/i-team-lawsuits-target-nev-drug-and-alcohol-center

Excerpts:
Several federal lawsuits now target an unlicensed Nevada drug and alcohol rehab center first exposed by the I-Team. Patients and the families say the rehab center isn't curing addictions; it's trying to recruit people into Scientology.

Patients at Narconon have told the I-Team they were exposed to mold, lice and treatments forcing them to try and lift objects with their mind. State lawmakers tried and failed to write a new law allowing inspectors to check out Narconon. Instead, one Las Vegas attorney gathered families nationwide and is taking Narconon to federal court.
Other documents obtained by Hamilton show Scientology calls Narconon its "bridge" to moving patients into religious activities.

"Of importance in that document, at the end, the patient is to be routed to the nearest org if the patient so desires," Hamilton said.

An org is Scientology religious center, including one in Las Vegas.

Over at WWP, the indefatigable David Love (<---true hero, imho) has a thread which contains a surprising document.

Here's a link to the thread/post: https://whyweprotest.net/community/...rconon-scientology.118483/page-5#post-2458803 (If the link doesn't work, it's post #164 in the thread entitled "David Loves Files Lawsuits Against Narconon Scientology" in the Leaks & Legal sub-section of the Anonymous v Scientology forum.)

The document posted appears to be a scanned copy of a letter sent from Asuris Behavioral Health to one of its insured denying benefit coverage for Narconon 'rehab' services.

Here's the pertinent portion of the denial:

"Following a review of the information available, our physician advisor(s) determined that we are unable to authorize payment for the above service(s) because according to Regence Medical Policy, Behavioral Health: Substance Related Disorders, Treatment of Adults, and review of the medical record submitted by Narconon of Southern California, it was determined that the treatment fails to meet our intensity of service requirements. There does not appear to be a clear and structured therapy process orientating the member to recovery resources. Authorization for payment is denied based on the premise of the program being non-standard rather than representing accepted and proven methods of treatment."

Insurance-speak is difficult to parse, lol, but this denial by Asuris contains very useful information -- most especially to those people who are now (or will be) involved as plaintiffs in Narconon lawsuits.

I don't know how large an insurance company Asuris is, but their position as regards Narconon 'rehab' is noteworthy. This denial letter, and any other denial letters from other health insurance companies, would help Ryan Hamilton (and any other plaintiff attorney) to convince the courts that Narconon's phony 'rehab' services fail to meet accepted medical standards of competent care.

Does anyone have similar denial of coverage letters from other American health insurance companies? If HorizonBCBS or Aetna or any of the larger insurance companies now deny benefit coverage to their insured customers for Narconon 'rehab', that information belongs in front of a judge asap.

Narconon will be a major factor in the downfall of Scientology.

Thanks to all the attorneys who have been and continue to take cases. It was only a short time ago when I had a very hard time convincing any attorney to take these victim cases. Either no money in it for them to put in all the work, or too fearful of Scientology litigation. My how times have changed.

Thanks to all who persevered in exposing this Narconon con over the years.

So who is the cult throwing at these narCONon suits?

We know their A team is dealing with Mosey and their D team is dealing with Vance Woodward. Do we know how seriously the cult is taking these suits?

Just wondering, because narCONon seems to be a good way to take down the cult by bleedimg the beast, so to speak.

Mary - THANK YOU. You too are one hell-of-a persistent woman on a course who has smashed L Con's name and NarcoNuts name into the Criminal History Books! Awesome work.
