I never had much dealings with Linda Colburn, as she was on Day and I was on Fdn. But I did get tricked into showing up somewhere for a "recovery cycle" about 5 years after I was out. It was rather humorous. She wanted to put me on the meter. I laughed. We talked for a while. I politely declined all offers of "help". It's funny when you are really out and disconnected from all that, how pitiful some of these people seem. She just looked to be a really unhealthy, kind of sad figure to me. I couldn't even get mad at her.

She likes cats & contributes to animal shelters. :) https://www.facebook.com/bsnlinda/activity/10203538058226255.

Was she ever married? I can't find any info on past husbands for her.

Jan Bowman moved to Boston via LA so that Mary Smith could have a nanny while doing her OEC in LA. It was very fucked up. She also had resources as a long time teacher and was immediately closed to give rather large personal loans to the likes of Nan Goodwin and other execs who were facing eviction etc.
The ability of some of these folks to shock and awe just never ceases does it! Even after reading so much in ESMB, books, and various blogs, the stories and anecdotes just keep coming. What an endless supply! Oh, Nan (and others), looks like you really made it go right in a Hill 10 with your OT powers.

I love this thread!

Who's nice in the COS Boston and who isn't?

I think we all struggled with our own sense of right and wrong when in the cult.

Maggie Mags was such a sweetheart IF YOU DID WHAT SHE WANTED.

But up close and personal she was just as nasty and vicious and hurtful as Fran or Mary.

And thus it was with most of those caring and lovely and funny and energetic and purposeful pals of mine who will now have NOTHING to do with me.

So how nice is shunning you?

One of the best parts of the Scn experience was the great and loving and caring people I met when in.

And the one of the worst parts was the loss of virtually all my friends when I left.

I ain't lying.

No, you ain't. Same story here except for the "virtually" part. I lost ALL my friends. And family, who were all still in. A complete life reboot in my mid-30s. But I think I did it right this time. :)

I'm thinking that a number of people were nice when they came in but after many years weren't so nice anymore.

Yup. A great example, was Mary Hogarty Poosti Smith (RIP). I was amazed to find that she had turned into a vicious, screaming, rip-his face-off, SO-hardened, nasty Scieno exec.

WOW! When she came in (1980?) she was shy, quiet, soft-spoken, a bit of a crunchy hippie.

A bit of that happened to most of us.

Former Boston Staff member Cary Goulston made it onto Tony O's blog this morning:

Once again I am posting AMA about the current scene or past scene here in Boston. I have had PMs that I answer and some I have backlogged but I would rather get this thread hopping. I think it is a very real indicator of the current state of Scientology in Boston that this thread is soooooo dead. LOL. The Cherch is basically incompetent, immaterial and irrelevant as Hamilton Burger would say.

As a follow up to my earlier post today, isn't Scientology upper and middle management full of Boston alumni? I know of two Cl V Org EDs who were on staff here. I have always been led to believe that Boston Scientology is the be all and end all. Isn't ED 339R the birthday game reference all about Boston?? Come on people, it's no fun being an UTR mole if no one cares anymore!

Of course we care. What you're doing is highly valued. For those sending PMs, maybe make them open for all.

Oh, I had a dream the other day that I was on staff. I was at a tense staff meeting and my anxiety was high. I decided to openly redicule the SP David Miscavige and say what he's done that's so off policy. Certain staff tried to shut me up. I left the meeting yelling and swearing. It was awesome.

Not that I think Scn works and that there is even a "true policy", just that the dream had me in that old thought prison. Was an exciting dream, haha.

Interestingly enough Raygun, I actually witnessed something like this when a staff member Jay Fernandes was semi ambushed by the entire staff to get him to resign his contract. He went ballistic lol. I do think that Freethinker might have some similar stories.

I agree, too, bambino. I've been out so long I've not got much to add but on rare occasions. Still, I like to read updates and look forward to when this all comes crashing down. Your current updates from the inside are very much appreciated especially given that you are taking risks in doing so.

You said: It's trained behavior, sure. But I knew plenty... many, MANY people who had been in a lot longer than her in positions of more power and were really great, nice, lovable people. Not everyone was vicious. Some played the vicious game because, like you said, they had to. Others grabbed onto it like a kid on candy. Scientology didn't make Fran what she was, it just magnified it.

I somewhat agree but not really. Scientology and the culture from uplines may have exacerbated evil tendencies but I still hold each of these assholes personally responsible for their actions. E.g. Fran McKay vs John Magerowski as Snr C/S. Hey this is a fun game! Who ya got? Mary Smith or Bobby Peiniadz? Jan Mageroswki (Borowski) or Jan Bowman (Smith)? Marissa Shepherd or Jean Gordon? Thurmen Silks or Nanette Ciano (Gramolini)? Cindy Massi or Mark Boucher? My point is that in each of these pairings I have seen the latter individuals almost unfailingly be kind and caring of the people they dealt with even in spite of sometimes intense pressure from the org.

I always got along with Fran, but maybe it's because she had the hots for me and I was pretty good in the chair, she used to joke about being called iron-butt or some such thing, she was a hard-ass for sure.. Jean Gordon was a good person, liked her very much as supe on KTL. Thurman Silks --- I always thought he was a pretentious asshole (and that mustache! seriously?) Jon Mags was always ok in my book until he showed his evilness when I got fucked-over for missing a withold on a touch assist.. fuck me! He joined the ranks of asshole after that in my book.

No way man! I was one of the most popular staff members with ALL execs!

It is funny though that with all my resistance to their constant strong arm manipulation, they wanted to keep me.

I went toe to toe with many execs, outright refused to do what they said and they still wanted to keep me.

Like when Joannie Hunter said my area wasn't doing well and I laid into her with a vengeance. She told i would be receiving a report for not following the orders of an executive. It never materialized and she left staff three weeks later.

I have stories and maybe I will tell them some day like when Fran accused me of trying to kill Gerard Renna. She did a whole knowledge report sec check thing. She wanted my ass so bad and she never got it. She almost had Gerard convinced that i tried to kill him that he came to me and asked me if I was. I gave him the nickname Samurai ED. By the time he was done in Boston, he wasn't such a Samurai.:coolwink:

Yeah, The R Man. What a totally on purpose asshole he was. He used to try to correct me on policy with threatening tones. I just let it roll off. He thought he was a Product Officer running around demanding people get their compliance reports done. Sheesh!

He's probably still there, probably an exec by now.

Asshole Exec Status

I see virtually all of the Boston org's problems as systemic.

You guys can scream about what an asshole the various execs were and you are 100% correct.

The biggest assholes of them all were LRH and David Miscavage.

Weren't we supposed ask, "What would Ron do?"

Ron loved to BLAME people and scream at them and DEMAND compliance or he'd throw them in the RPF or a chain locker.

Therefore, unless you were acting like LRH and being an asshole you were in non-compliance.

In the 70's, staff would shudder at the mere mention of Alex Sibersky or Kerry Gleason or David Light or Bill Franks. Oddly John Eastman was Snr CS and the auditors (like Paige Wolgamut or Debbie French or Joe Nuccio) would brag about how many hours they'd deliver with not a lot of training and thought Eastman was terrific. This is typical of the tech versus admin struggle. Tech guys want to make people saner. Admin guys want to intimidate people into acting saner.

My observation was that Scieno execs were always demanding and when the products weren't forthcoming they could be assholes. Some less of an asshole than others.

Becoming a fully interned, fully grooved-in asshole exec was not as simple as one might think. You had to EARN being an FULL asshole from years of being beaten down and beating others down. The longer you were in, the more of an asshole you were entitled to be.

Let's not get reasonable about being an asshole!

There should be a plaque in the Boston Org commemorating the many, many asshole execs who have come down the pike.

haha. Samurai ED. I forgot about that.

During the period Gerard was ED, and daily ripping anyone's face off who didn't bow down before him, he decided to write a book. The subject was "Love". You can't make this stuff up. :)

Unfortunately, he was not literate enough to actually write a book, so it never saw the light of day and thus never had the chance to be labeled squirrel tech.

Really, if that doesn't beat all. he was mid a divorce with Karen, had problems with Patrick, had put every exec and staff in lowers except me and he writes a book about love? That's a big 10 LOL.:coolwink:

He had Elaine proofreading it for him, correcting spelling, grammar, stuff like that. It was pretty unreadable apparently. She tried to make some editorial suggestions beyond that and he got pissed off and fired her from the project. Love, indeed. :)
