Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

I quit using that method to tune years ago. My piano tuner friend proved to me that it doesn't work all the time. The reason is the upper partials go out of tune. This I know you know as it is the fact behind tempering. On a guitar, the upper partials go out of tune at different rates on each string. So when you tune to eliminate the beats like that, it depends on the unpredictable out of tuneness of a given string's nature (given string length, diameter and tension) and it is why even though you SHOULD be in tune, sometimes a given chord has a clam in certain positions but not others. I have forgotten how to post externals into a message (due to having been indisposed for a few years) but look for Scott Grove's tuning video on YouTube. He shows the out of tuneness of the harmonics and then shows the chromatic tuner method I told you about. It honestly blew my mind how that method produces such fullness and corrects intonation problems assuming the frets and bridge are properly placed. My aural piano tuner buddy also showed me that, but he had an aural solution that worked equally well. My hearing is pretty good, but I have bad ear days, so the aural method was not good for me. I had settled for Korg tune for years which was good enough for bar bands until I came across that Scott Grove video a couple weeks ago.

Thanks, I'll look for that video. Although I'm already a little bit skeptic about this method, because I can't imagine how that method would improve the sound of all chords. Some chords, OK, I can certainly believe that, but I'd expect that the price for having some sweeter sounding chords will be payed for with other, now uglier sounding chords. After all, I'm not Tommy Emmanuel, who can re-tune his guitar mid-song without losing a beat. :coolwink:

Just to make things crystal clear, you were PM'ing me ... and I was trying to put a stop to it ... politely.

Many years ago (when Roger was still the Messiah) if anyone on this thread actually ceased sycophantically grovelling and stood up to him instead, I automatically did a triple somersault (sometimes with pike) and cheered ... I may have issues (lol) but I'm always upfront.

I don't believe it's healthy to replace one guru with another and it says very little for the "tek" if there's a need to.

No need to respond, I won't be bothering you again unless you mention my name and distort things.

Enjoy "your" thread.

He has more on the placement of saddles on each string and why the saddles should slant in two parallel lines running from treble to bass on a diagonal. I can't give you the equation, but it works. The 15 cents flat thing on the G# is definitely counterintuitive, I'll grant you and I was skeptical too until I tried it. I wouldn't shit ya MrNobody, yer mah fav'rite turd.:coolwink:

I believe you, man. :)

Also, it wouldn't be that easy to shit me on this particular topic. After all, for a decade or so, I made quite a few bucks selling hand-filed bridge-inlays and saddles to my favorite guitar shop.

Quite a few customers liked to have my brass-saddles on their basses. Made their strings sound brilliant, crispy and funky twice as long as these cheap regular plastic saddles. And quite a few acoustic guitarists loved my hand-tailored bone-saddles and bridge-inlays. 150 bucks for a hand-made, fully pitch-compensated bridge-inlay made out of bone, was not too much. But, frankly, boiling and fully de-greasing a pot of bone material, stinks! So I don't do that anymore.

I'd still manufacture brass components, but my source of high-quality low-price brass has dried out and I'd have to find me another vendor willing to offer me comparable features.

Also: It's become increasingly harder to compete with good, mass-produced, off-the-shelf components. Today, you can buy a brass or bone saddle for what? 3 bucks? 4 bucks? The qualities I used for my stuff is orders of magnitude better than these cheap, soft, wobbly copper/tin/aluminum/whatever alloys they sell for brass nowadays, but 98% of the customers don't see the difference - because brass is brass, right? :bigcry:

I can't even tell you how many times I've been asked that question. I always managed to FN it despite anything I'd said or done. :)

You're one of my "star posters" here. You may not be Lakey's idea of a "star poster", of course, but there's one thing everyone should appreciate about your posts here...
you're consistent! :p

Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

I always tune open string first then 12th fret harmonics. Works for me. :)
(and I've been making a living as a performing musician - singer/guitarist - for 50+ years!)

Hey, Neil Young's been out of tune for 50 years and look how far he's gotten.:coolwink:
I just wanted to share that tuning method. I'm certainly not suggesting anyone needs a musician's sec check or anything, but........ have you ever turned up your amplifier to drown out another musician?

Yes, on a good quality instrument, that should work too, but try that on a brand new $60 off-the-shelf guitar that isn't even octave-clean.

It's the 5th and 7th fret harmonics that go wildly out of tune. 12th fret is pretty tame.

Well, what's a bassist gonna do, when that shitty guitarist can't keep the beat?

Good point!
I always make (or re-model) my own saddles. I'd never try to work professionally with a $60 guitar but I've fixed more than a few for students. :)

The WORST is when you lay down the tempo as bassist and the shitty guitar player comes in out of tune and out of time and then the motherlovin drummer locks in with the guitar player.:storm:

 Oh, in my younger days, I was a huge fan of all kinds of FX devices, but later, I've learned to appreciate the beauty of a clean, natural sound. Sometimes, less is more. :)

Lol. Did you click the pic?
I thought the "sober up the bass-player" pedal was priceless!
I once worked with a Bassist who used to fall asleep mid-song! LOL

That's exactly why I, after having worked with that guitarist once, made it a rule to always have at least twice as much wattage on stage than I'd need under "normal" circumstances.
