Arrest in St. Louis

About you dont take things comments...i shouldn't have to live in fear of having ANYTHING taken from me, not from citizens...and CERTAINLY not by the police. I know alot of people do that, and i cant blame them. but that just not how i roll.

its funny you say that. I got half of my stuff back, they gave me back my stuff back. I my backpack, my pocket knife and multi-tool, my phones, hell they even let me have my flash back. everything except for my laptop and camera. even funnier is that i had JUST gotten to the picket...i had been there about five minutes. i didnt even have time to take my lens cap off. its a canon 50D so it doesnt even shoot video.

And if they want to claim "evidence" thats bullshit. there is nothing about my items that would qualify them as active, they were on my person just like the rest of my belongings, there is nothing that would make them any more or less important then anything else i had on me. My phone has better multimedia capabilities then camera, and my laptop was in my bag, in hibernation. they want to seize a memory card...thats one thing. But they have no right or reason to hold my items other then the whole douchebag factor.

I am sure that the scilons were taking pictures...they have a LONG history of trying to take pictures of us on the sly. Usually they just setup a camera and video tape the whole thing...or something.

I would assume that somebody 'inside' is helping them get copies of everything on both the computer and camera. If you're lucky, they'll just get copies, not trash it all.

Go to a computer expert, preferably qualified in computer foresnics, to see if your computer was turned on while in custody of the police. Bring a witness with you, take a film of the tech inspecting your computer.

for the record i am not to concern about them copying info from my computer. first thing is that it was locked and password protected. secondly anyhting i consider sensitive is encrypted. and lastly, if they try to turn it on and it can connect to the internet in any way i get an updated IP address from where it logged on (from three different clients). i know what to look for in case they tried to "clone" the drive. are my protections perfect? no, but they pretty effective at locating my laptop.

i might not be anonymous, but i'm not going to let anyone try to usurp my gear. and my camera, so long as i get everything back thats no big deal they can try to get what they want off of it, but it was formatted before it went out.

oddly enough, if they were that concerned about data retention, they would have confiscated the two 8GB thumb drives on my key ring, and let face, thats where i keep the juicy stuff.

First Ace, I admire your courage. You felt you were not breaking the law and you challenged them on it. What you did was perfectly reasonable and that's exactly what we need to do to make this movement progress forward.

You sat at the front of the bus, while so many are still sitting at the back!

I never advocate breaking the law in any way whatsoever, but in this present case, the street / sidewalk was not marked as closed, there was no permit (as far as I read) and you acted admirably. You're doin' it right.

For your computer, I would like to know if they ATTEMPTED to get in to it. That's the main civil rights issue here. Even the officer looking through your backpack was an unreasonable search. You were handcuffed, he had nothing to fear and the search was totally unrealed to the protest, which makes it an illegal search.

Good to get the scoop on what went down from the horse's mouth, Alex. Thanks.

I admire and appreciate you for your courage, and understand why you did what you did, but I can't help but be concerned about the possible outcome. In an ideal world there'd be no problem, because you stood up for your rights and didn't break the law. However, we don't live in an ideal world so it's not a bad thing to have some consideration for consequences.

If you were one of our sons, we'd be concerned, just as we are for all of the Anons out there protesting. We admire and appreciate what you do, but we don't want to see you put yourselves in harms way in the process.

Here's hoping the outcome is a good one - All the best with this, mate. :)

Cheers,
Carmel

The UCPD called me at 2:19am (why so early?) and let me know that i could pick my camera and laptop up...i got everything back about 11:30 this morning.

I went with the most simple information i could, and found that my computer was accessed twice. my WiFi was turned off. the first image you will see is my first and last access times...

all that looks normal, and i see now WINDOWS ( I cant stress that enough ) program access or security credentials. HOWEVER, however the hardware logs tell a different story...

VERY FUKKEN SUSPICIOUS

what gave it away? when i turn it on, the WiFi was turned...i NEVER turn off the WiFi unless i am trying to save battery life. NOW i need to review my logs more losely the verify that it wasnt a computer activated event, most likely it was not, but i will double check anyway. I never received updated IP info because there were no out going network connections made...that i can see. However, i can see that my comuter was awake for longer swaths of time then the battery would allow (i had the charger with me, meaning that it had to be plugged in to something. I will not say how long it had been on, just that windows event viewer say that it was longer then the life of the battery.

You're awesome!

And just to be clear, regarding your comment:
"but seriously when did I get such epic manboobs..."
I find manboobs particularly hot in guys worth fighting the good fight!

Cheers.

ACEdotcom,

Congratulations on handling everything in such a level-headed and calm manner, this is the way this sort of thing ought to be dealt with.

Glad you got your stuff back, Ace. These people are unbelievable.

Hmm... Would 'regular' police be nosey enough to turn the computer on? - Or does this tell us that OSA is doing it?

It is unfortunatly quite likely that OSA has improper access.. A scilon cop there, or some unholy alliance.

What information could they have gotten?

Look for files accessed in that timeframe.. Explorer, and click the bar at top of the 'accessed time' column.. (I probably don't have to tell you.. ) - Likewise, look for new programs installed. New files, found in the same way with creation date.

even if they turned on my computer they still have passwords and encryption to get through. I know that those methods arent 100% secure, but they would stop all but the most 1337, because then you have to start looking into harddrive cloning and booting linux distros off my hardware. After a thorough check of my laptop i dint believe that they were doing anything but making surethat my hardware actually would turn on, and if it WASNT password protected, then my computer falls under "plain view laws" and is subject to a search just like an unlocked briefcase.

also there isnt anything relevant to my arrest or of interest on my computer. a few people have said "keylogging and entrapment" but i dont see any files or folders installed while it was in lock up.

Not knowing the laws in your area, this looks to me as a False Arrest suit against the cop and the city, but perhaps not a big one.

Maybe after such a suit, the city cops might become less eager to be the puppets for Scientology.

Also, is there not some way of reporting improper conduct by police to the FBI?

Where should the cake be sent?

rootkit?

An attacker may use a rootkit to replace vital system executables, which may then be used to hide processes and files the attacker has installed, along with the presence of the rootkit.

Wikipedia as a nice article about them. funny thing is that the first big rootkit was actually released by Sony Music to help curb CD piracy.

Yes. Especially in a case like this, where the original 'cause' for arrest was so iffy. It would be completely typical for them to look for a better 'charge'. It might not stand up in court, but, they would be operating on the theory of 'in plain sight', since the computer was there when he was arrested.
