Scientology zoning battle hits Sandy Springs

They currently have 111 parking spaces there, and want to convert 30 of them to a 4th floor. In Georgia. Talk about non-issues!

The locals certainly won't have to worry about a parking problem. They could probably swing a deal with the CofS to be allowed to use CofS parking, since the CofS isn't going to be using it much.

So the CoS is going to need to explain why they need this nice big building but nobody is going to show up so they don't need much parking (and won't in the future too). Sounds like a fun argument they need to make.

I guess they are going to have to admit that they have no intent to "Boom it" in the deep south.

DM has no intent to boom it, but the local dedicated Scios probably do. Won't happen, of course. Gorgeous building, though.

So the parking spaces are for the 4th floor onto a building that was not engineered for one and will require VERY expensive renovations to make it so.
The parking spaces mean that the access to this floor will be separate from the rest of the building.
That is my guess.
I wonder who will occupy that floor?

Quality of life threatened

Many residents view the Scientology battle as a clear example of quality of life being trampled in their neighborhoods.

. More than 500 have signed petitions urging an outright denial, saying even the existing parking isn’t enough and the church will increase traffic problems at the oddly aligned intersection.

What arrogance!
The Planning Commission had been expected to vote between two sets of conditions.

The original conditions called for keeping the existing 111 parking spaces on the site but limited the church to three floors.

The compromise negotiated by the attorneys allowed the church to convert 30 parking spaces into a fourth-floor area for the church but kept the occupancy at 283.

Church representatives said the additional space in the compromise was needed for its operations and hinted at lawsuits if the city denied them.

Rezoning request DENIED

The Sandy Springs planning commission DENIED scientology's request for rezoning. :)

The vote is non-binding and will be considered by the city council in October.

The new building would give them much better visibility to the public being right on the corner of a busy intersection. The location they have now is pretty well hidden in a suite in a nondescript building in an office park way off of a main thoroughfare.

It's a small win but a win nonetheless.

Someone should hint that the Legal coffers of Scientology are running a bit smaller than usual.
Perhaps they are banking too much on their past in the lawsuit department.

I would think that the 4th floor may become a secondary safe house for documents or people.
