Carmelo, Your indian friend sounds like my kind of guy. I never met a rattle snake living in the midwest most of my life. But, one time my husband and I were attending a circus type thingy in Las Vegas and they had a snake show. Of course I was interested never having the opportunity to meet a snake. The guy who put on the show had a pink, yes pink python for sale. She was darling and he only wanted $45 for her.
I wound the five feet of her around my body and went looking for my husband. He did not want to see the snake show and had wandered off, I found him and showed him Pinky. I never knew he had a thing about snakes. After backing up about three feet from him, I asked him about buying her for me. After a short discussion, mostly him, I took Pinky back to her owner and settled for pink cotton candy.
The things we do for husbands. :melodramatic:
Aunt Pat

When I was little, I remember my father catching the rattlers and getting them out of the hay barn. I just watched. I have no problems with snakes, but I'm not interested in having them under the same roof.

On the other hand, one of our boys, who is married to a vet (veterinarian that is) has lots of snakes and iguanas.

If we were all the same, we'd be like Wonder Bread. That would be boring.

For Those Who Have Enjoyed Some of What I Write

OK, My Dears, and this in particular is for Lakey who, on another thread, opened up the subject of "study," and who responded with interest that I had written a book in relation to education . . .

My website regarding such went live last night . . . you guys can be the first to see it, and since I respect the opinions of you who've been regular contributors to this thread, I would welcome a critique or two  (be kind, now:D)

Great news Rog!! Its funny that you mentioned your book on education at this time. I have been talking for the last two or three days about reviving the previous thread I did on education. I had an experience with my thread about sex in the Sea Org and Scientology in general where the thread generated some interest, reached 1750 "views" and went flat. I then dropped the thread to work on this one. I noticed around Christmas time that Heidrun Beer had taken over that thread and it had grown to about 6000 views so I started posting there again and it is now at 8,500 views which is pretty high and the written replies by others are up to over 330 which is also very high.

Similarly, my education thread started strong and quickly reached 1250 views and went flat but it had over 100 replies and some of those replies, including yours, were some of the best replies or articles on education which I had ever seen. I realized that the educational thread has much more life in it that has not yet been tapped.

KILLING TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE - I WILL RE-OPEN THE EDUCATION THREAD THIS MORNING AND NOW HAVE A VALID PRETEXT FOR DOING SO! I will announce your new website and book and provide a link to it. I remember some of the key contributors on that thread such as Ted, Dart and Olska and several other notable people with education backgrounds.

Rog, I will be able to flow some power to you by linking to your site from here and also from the General Discussion threads where my educational thread will be revivified this morning.

CRITIQUING YOUR WORK You can bet that your work will be heavily critiqued! We are not going to go all that easy on you but I will, as always, be civil but that guy Carmelo, I can't vouch for him. He may try and tear you to shreds, you've got to keep an eye on him!
Lakey
P.S. If I help you stir up a lot of interest in your book, I would not be averse to receiving a free signed copy.

That CarmelO, devious! See the way he/she/it keeps changing avatars!?! Man, I don't know whether to love it or leave it! :D

It's currently only in e-book form . . . . . we decided to get it up and out there rather than delay while the standard print publishing trick runs its course . . . forever and five days :grouch:

Part of my and Virginia's overall strategy for bringing beneficial change to the system, and to civilization, required us getting an immediate presence up there.

Tell me what you think of what the site says

Roger's book

It looks comprehensive.

On reading the index, it does not look like reading for the "average" individual.

It looks like reading for a college educated audience with training in processing of some type.

Having, at one time, run a school (private K-12), many times the biggest barrier to a child's success is one of their parents.

This can be attitude, ie"I got away with Hell raising, he can get away with it."

The parent who doesn't have time for their kid, to help with homework.

The parent, who had trouble in school, but "was helped by the ____ program when I was 14. When he's 14, we'll put him in that"

******

I don't know that any book is going to get past the parent with the fixed attitude - which, essentially holds the pain of the student away, so that it isn't experienced, consequently leaving the situation unchanged.

i'm writing about this exact phenomena because we have two grandchildren who are in big trouble educationally speaking. They are terrific athletes, but their ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide ARE in as bad a shapeas THERE GRAMMER.YER book, isnt gumnna get duplicated by there'n momma.

and yes, this is our current ruin, so to speak.. any words of advice, etc are more than appreciated.

The index, eh? You one of those who starts things from the back!

Try seeing what the start of the Table of Contents says :D

About This Book iii

This Book Was Written for the Average Mom & Dad, Student and Teacher ≈ It is Not an Academic Tome ≈ It is the Result of Empirical Research, Test, and Observation: Not Theoretical Musings ≈ We Invite You to Test and Experience What We and Others Have found to be Simple, Self Evident, Workable Truths.

And it sure as hell was not written for the "College Graduate" class, as the Dept of Ed 2003 Survey of Adult Literacy (release at the end of 2005) revealed that only 31% of College Grads could pass the Dept Ed standard of literacy competence!! The rest of the college grad set were sub-standard in varying degrees down to the 3% of college graduates who took the test demonstrating “below basic” literacy . . . i.e next to illiterate.

As to parents with fixed attitudes? . . . . Ruff. I don't get hung up on not being able to help everybody . . . that's a losing game and a way to give self aggro. There's only one public I'm interested in, and that's those who care enough to want to try and do better and to help their kids (or if they are teachers, their students); and there are zillions of them in our society.

And even these good guys have "fixed attitudes" . . . so what? The book cites such and has a handling for it!

I hated school. I seriously considered dropping out of high school as a junior. On the other hand, I was an honor student with acceptable honor student grades in an upper middle class ghetto. I've taken college classes where I needed to.

I'm not into trusting "Big Brother" to educate anyone 'cept those in the middle, not the brightest and not the struggling.

What does you'uns say to that?

We have a son, who barely made it out of high school on his grades. He, like -_me_ , found school super boring. He's going to be forty this year. He's an alpha geek at ebay. With a high school diploma, he makes mid six figures.

His wife, on the other hand says things like "Him and me, we're going to --" She was never very good in school. She has got an AA degree (half a BA). She was a competitive swimmer in high school.

The two kids eat up a ski slope, compete in gymnastics above their age group, and are dreadfully under their age group in readin' ritin' and rithmetic. They are bright, nice, not cranky little people. They have a loving set of parents.

Their mother's solution is to say they'll get tutoring from SCORE when they need it.

From grandparents (us) who read, write, and can do calculus with our eyes closed :) this is not acceptable.

any suggestions?

Roger's Book

Roger -
I looked over your the site describing your materials and I started at the Table of Contents, following your admonition to Carmelo. Of course, I would have started there anyway.

I did not find the book scholarly or intimidaing at all. It is not written for dummies or idiots to be sure but a parent who is looking for a good private school or even the best public school to send their child to, or a high school or college student who is looking for a "how to study" handbook are going to be interested in reading such a book. Our slightly upscale neighborhood in Orange County is just full of concerned parents who want the best for their children as far as education is concerned. My Son graduated high school in 2000 and my daughter in 2004 so we are talking not that long ago. The parents, usually college educated, were extremely interested in their children's education from the time the kids started even preschool.

I think your market is these types of good middle class or upper middle class types of parents, fairly well educated themselves and with a strong desire to have their children receive the best possible education. For that particular group of people, your book is pitched at the proper level to communicate to them. If you go into the ghetto or the Latin barrios, the average level of the parents and the students may make the book a bit lofty but still not out of their reach as far as their ability to understand and work with the principles. Plus, in those communities you will appeal to those families who are determined to get a good education and move up and out of their ghettos and also many of the Teachers who teach in those areas will be VERY interested in reading your book because they need help in making there jobs both more bearable and more fulfilling.!

A SPANISH EDITION AND ALSO THE ASIAN COMMUNITY
Marketing the book in the Southwest portion of the USA, once you get rolling, I suggest you have a spanish translation of your book done. It could probably be translated in Spanish for very little extra cost and you would reach a vastly larger percentage of your public. I am in Orange County, California, which until recently was thought of as all white and totally Christian. It used to look like the Germany of the 30's here not too long ago, so many blond and blue eyed people constituted the population. However, nowadays, I would say that close to half the people in Orange County have Spanish as their main language. It is totally a bi-lingual community here now and blonde and blues eyes are probably only 20% to 25% of the population.

The Asian community, virtually all major denominations, excel in education and the parents are brutal in forcing their children to study. The Asians outperform the Caucasians statistically in every area of academic education. If I was to pick the most intense studiers, it would be the Koreans, especially in Math, Science and Computer studies. China has two camps, mainlanders and Taiwanese, The Taiwanese are much more hip and modern, similar to the Japanese while the mainland Chinese are more "old school" and crusty but both groups want and demand good educations. The Japanese are a more independent group - you know how they are, they don't make a lot of noise but just demonstrate industriousness and competence. The Vietnamese are very keen on education as well.

TWO FACETS OF YOUR BOOK
I perceive that your book is two books within one (at least 2 books if not more!). The first part of your book concerns barriers to study and what they are and how to remove them. To get into this portion of the book, you have had to get into the philosopy of why people want to and need to learn so as to suceed in life and enjoy life. This is cut and dried and probably other books about study might briefly touch on this.

However, you develop a "not directly related to study portion of your book" and you go to such a degree that a second book is written within the first book, or at least that is what I got out of your Table of Contents and its supporting comments.

In this second facet of your book, you take on the ambitious project of giving your readers almost a complete philosophy of life! A good book on How to teach, how to study is great value for only $27.95. Now, you are actually sweetening the deal and for free are giving people almost a "primer" on how to live life and how to live a better life than the readers ever believed possible. This is certainly exchange in abundance!!

It is akin to Lao Tze, when he was asked to write up his philosophy of life by the guard at the Citiy gate, writing up his philosophy as requested and then throwing in another sub book within his book telling how to best study his philosopy and in fact to study or teach any subject. IT IS QUITE A BONUS TO THROW IN THE EXTRA PHILOSOPHICAL MATERIAL WHICH YOU AND VIRGINIA THROW IN. I was even thinking that C of S might not like your book for two reasons, first borrowing some of Hubbard's study tech and second for throwing in some philosophical sections which make your book a competitor to what they are selling. I am sure you have worked all this type of thing out already before you got this far.

MARKETING
You have got something here that is desparately needed and wanted by societies all over the world though many people may not know that they need it or even that they want it. This book has to be carefully marketed and if that is done professionally and correctly, I think you may have a "Tiger by its tail" and the book could become a landmark book and actually contribute a great deal to improving conditions on Earth. The how to teach and how to study portions are the things which need to be marketed. The philosophy portion is attached to those rather seamlsessly and will be absorbed and applled as the steps in the book are drilled.

The book has enormous potential! On a saner planet, something like this would be recognized for what it is and quickly be assimilated into society and be standard issue in every college book store. On planet Earth, competing with crap and smut and MTV, it will take a brilliant marketing effort but this book could really go far and help make a better world.!!!
Lakey
P.S. Rog - I put that other education website up yesterday with a link to your new book. I got about 90 views yesterday but no one wrote any reply except me. If you could write a little blurb on that thread, it my help unstick things so that more people will respond. If that does not work, you could just start a new thread yourself, just talking about your new book

Woormeys...

Oh my, after all that rain, WORMS have seriously invaded this thread!

While they are a good source of protein if you're desperate, I prefer them doing their jobs out in the garden soil. :)

Good on you Roger! I've just gotten a glimpse of the website, will really give a good long hard look soon when I have more time.

As a lifelong educator, I appreciate all efforts to till the soil with parents and students...

Carmelo, your little guy shoulda been a GATE student...glad he landed on his feet, instead of crunched up in the system, as often happens to our best, brightest and most innovative. I think you had much to do with that outcome! :coolwink:

Count me In.

Which reminds me; let's get together for spaghetti next time you are in SoCal. Maybe Lakey would care to join us?

Mark A. Baker

Mark,

Its funny you mention this, I remember, right after I first joined ESMB, you asked me if I used to be on lines at the Orange County Ord and I said yes and asked you if you would like to meet for coffee but you never replied.

More recently, Carmelo suggested we have my people contact his people about getting together for lunch. I didn't know if he was serious or not. Anyway, if you two set up for an Italian lunch, I would be happy to join you.

On that Alan Walters memorial on March 20, I found out that it is a by invitation only event for Alan's friends and not the public at large. We can not form a caravan and just go on our own, one has to be invited.

Well, do let me know about that lunch.

Purple Haze, have your people call my people then my people will call Mark's people, then Mark's people will call Carmelo's people and probably something can be arranged. I hope they play Streisand's song "People" over the speakers at the restaurant.

AnonKat - What's with Ron's teeth?

Anonkat, I discovered LRH video a couple of years ago. I think Ron comes off looking pretty good in the video. The thing about him not having a second wife though basically dishonest is not a true lie because his second marriage was bigamist and one could make a case that the marriage was not legal. The worst thing about Ron is looking at his teeth, for one of the world's richest men, he sure did not take care of his teeth, he was only 57 years old then and yet his teeth were rotted out and totally uncared for. What's with that?
