There was an article published recently in the WSJ in which the author provided details of the actual amount of playing time in a typical NFL game.

The camera shots of the cheerleaders run only 3 seconds. Life is so unfair.

I decided to time the playing time in a game and found the same thing...each play took about 5 seconds, interrupted by 12 minutes of rest. My nephew who was a linebacker said "It's really hard!!"
