Big goings one in Riverside yesterday!
DOWNTOWN RIVERSIDE, CA - Many of the cities in Southern California now have spectacular downtimes. Long Beach, Santa Monica, Glendale, Pasadena, even Fullerton and the city of Orange. I heard that Riverside has a downtown which does not take a back seat to any of these. I decided to take a drive out to Riverside and check out their downtown district. It was more like a visit to a European City in Spain or Portugal than to a U.S. Downtown.
While in Riverside, I decided to check out what used to be the gigantic Riverside Mission. It began life in 1909 as the YMCA building in Riverside. This building is huge, taking the better part of a city block in width and about half that in depth. It is enormous. I was taken on a guided tour and enjoyed it thoroughly. After viewing the building, I visited the Mission Inn which is a classic Spanish Architecture hotel, originally built in the late 1800's. Many of our U.S. Presendents have stayed there. It is registered as a Historical Building in the U.S. Registry of such places. They were booked solid for lunch so I walked a couple of blocks away to a Cajun restaurant and had a delightful cajun lunch.
After parking and walking the streets some more, I then went to Starbucks for coffee and spent some time there observing people and picking up the local flavor of the City. Needless to say, it was one of the finer downtowns of California cities which I have ever seen and I was very impressed.
I had never been out to the Scientology compound called Gold so I decided to take the 22 mile drive to Gilman Hot Springs just to see what the compound looked like. The complex is very long, perhaps a mile or so and very interesting to see after having heard so much about it for many years. I then drove the 35 to 40 miles and came home.
