Our band was booked to play during a ride on this train:
'twas a slow ride (a bicycle would have been faster), but experiencing a steam train from the old days was so much fun.

You could start at my house and ride all the way to LA
pretty pictures! Our train nut son, when he was 14 did 29,000 miles on $600.---45 day excursion pass. I don't think he got to Orlando, but he was definitely in New Orleans, Washington DC, Chicago, Cincinnati, Seattle , Portland, LA. He's the one who gave some advice on this film, when it was just a conception, before the script was even started.

I've taken the Silver Meteor up and down the east coast. I remember one time in 1994 it was only 35 bucks round trip Orlando to Miami. My auditor David Pennell lived right near the depot in Ft Lauderdale. Didn't have to buy gas and drive the turnpike. Huge seats and you could keep changing cars looking for the most interesting people. We got stuck in the middle of an everglade because the lightening and rain caused 0 visibility and the torrents made the rails not safe to glide on. There were cows out there in the miles of nothing. They just stood there with ominous vicious lightning cracking all around and not a tree to hide under.

He spent long hours planning his route. On excursion fares, you can't commute, so only ONCE back and forth on any one set of tracks. He went all over the US. Art Lloyd, Amtrak's western PR guy at the time, came to our house and talked with him prior to the trip. He got treated like a VIP by all the train people. They helped him get motel hotel etc rooms to stay on stop overs. He met Graham Clayter, CEO at the time of Amtrak. No one else ha ever done that many miles on a single ticket. He wrote a dozen articles for our local paper. It led to a job with the paper when he returned. This was before the internet and before cell phones.

Since you haven't quoted anything, I can't be sure, but in case you were talking to me:
No, I didn't ride on the Sunset Limited, I rode on the train from the PIC I posted. That was less than 5 years ago. The train is a rolling train museum in Germany and only runs a few days per year, because booking the tracks is quite an organizational piece of work in itself, and keeping the train in good condition takes a lot of work and money. The whole project is run by fans and friends of the old train (steam and early diesel) technologies.

No, this was the exact train I rode on - it's a German museum project, as I've mentioned in my latest reply to Hatshepsut. So yes, I am in Europe.

I know what you mean about it being a lot of work to maintain those old steam engines. We have one about 6 miles from here that runs through the Cuyahoga valley. It picks up people on their bikes and totes em for 2 bucks. They can get off at any of 20 little towns. It used to be a steam engine on this route as part of touring the Cuyahoga Natl forest. There are big piles of coal by the RR now. The steam engine is dressed up like Thomas The Train and brought out once a yr for the kids.
