Re: Why I Owe My Mother
Great Ted, these are all hillarious!! If I didn't know better, I would have guessed this stuff came from a Jewish mother. Every single one of those lines was used on the kids in our family and by most parents in our neighborhood as well. Most of those lines resonated with the culture of the 40's and 50's and probably the 30's (before my time). Nowadays, I bet they would all be deemed outmoded by current authorities. They all seem to be politically incorrect or insensitive by today's standards.
The one that always puzzled me the most is #3, "If you don't straighten out, I am going to knock you into the middle of next week." That was usually said by Fathers , not Mothers in my neighborhood. I just didn't get what it meant and asked my Dad several times to clarify what he meant.
I can't resist adding two more items:
The first is ABOUT ETHICS, and is very similar in meaning to your #3 above. "If you don't straighten out, I am going to hit you so hard that you won't know whether you are on foot or on horseback."
The second one is ABOUT TELLING LIES. "If I find out that you are lying to me, I will wash your mouth out with soap." BTW, this threat was actually carried out several times in our family by our Mom.
Try saying those to a modern kid and they either wouldn't know what it meant and/or they would consider you a wierdo.

in the dark I ran smack dab into the edge of the bathroom door ....never saw it coming....miscalculated and couldn't see where I was going....surprised the hell out of me.....my mom came running to see what happened and I forgot all about having to go to the bathroom, since I was now more concerned with the recent crash, the pain and the damage to my face. I had a line down the middle of my face for a while. After that night, I always had a nightlight in my room when I went to bed, until I got married and had a husband to protect me.
The nightlight gave me a great deal of comfort and it was funny how the light made the snakes disappear.....never any more snakes. Those vipers sure had me scared for a while, though.
