Yeah right, a scientology front disguised as a charity?

There's nothing unusual about this. It's common for celebrities, who win lawsuits, to donate the proceeds to charity, because not only is it a huge tax write-off (the proceeds, attorneys fees & court costs are all-written off as part of the charitable contribution), but celebrities are concerned about the negative exposure of being touted as a diva for filing lawsuits.

Google.. celebrities+lawsuits. It's very common.

Well, yeah, but in his case I don't think it's an unreasonable conclusion. In fact, that's the same cynical thought I first had when I read it. "Gee, is that CCHR or Narconon?" He can go ahead and prove me wrong by donating to the Red Cross or United Way.

Personally, I think this is an extremely ill-advised lawsuit and has about a .999% chance of succeeding at the requested jury trial (if it makes it that far) and was filed almost certainly for the PR value. It's just too easy to defend the suit on the grounds Bert's alleging. It really doesn't make much sense to me aside from TC demanding that it be done regardless of any chance of success.

Notice that he still hasn't filed against Vanity Fair which was a far more damaging article (imho) to his reputation than anything contained in these headlines/articles by shopping cart rag mags. By filing this and not one against VG after sending that hilarious "scathing" letter to Graydon Carter it's almost like he's admitting everything in the VF article is absolutely true.

I actually am on his side on this. Accusing him of abandoning his daughter is horrible and wrong. I doubt they can defend that accusation at all and I hope the magazine loses. From all accounts he talks to her frequently every day. There are plenty of reasons a person may not be able to be physically present with their child, particularly after a divorce, which has nothing to do with abandonment and everything to do with an unfortunate situation. It is not about the amount of time a parent spends with their child, but the quality of the time they spend and the fact that the child knows they are loved.

Tom Cruise files $50M defamation suit over Suri abandonment claim

Tom Cruise is going on offense, suing the publishers of Life & Style Weekly for defamation and seeking $50 million in damages over a cover that alleged he'd "abandoned" daughter Suri.

"Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri," attorney Bert Fields said in a statement Wednesday. "To say he has 'abandoned' her is a vicious lie. To say it in lurid headlines with a tearful picture of Suri is reprehensible."

This story is all over the news sources.

It's big
.

Any publicity is better than none.

What is quite telling here is the boundary he is drawing. Apparently it is ok to publish stories about his control fetish over his wife, etc.

But to say he has "abandoned his child" is over the line.

One can only hope they take it to discovery.

I thought Scientologist's had to stay out of the courts - only DM can sue? Tom - your ethics are slipping - You are soooooo Oat Tea - why can't you just poof the shit out of the paper's? Command Intention them to stop! Tone 40 Katie to come back to you! Come on Tom - don't let LRH down!!

Factually - Tom did abandon his family again - just like Nicole and Mimi - He allowed David Miscavige to take over his life and that meant DM and the Cult is more important than his own family - that what Scientology does - gets you alone - hating your family and blaming them for your mixed up emotions and feelings - then you join the cult 100% and are convinced it is from past lives -

Everyone feels like shit in Scientology - EVERYONE ! So OSA and lurkers - just admit it and get the show on the road - get out!

Re: Tom Cruise launches $50m law suit

"Tom doesn't go around suing people," Fields said in the statement. "He's not a litigious guy. But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he's going to sue."

If Cruise wins the lawsuit, Fields said, the money would be donated to charity.
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! The IAS must be drooling so much the RPFers can't mop it up quickly enough...

I don't expect much public sympathy for Tom Cruise. He's made a fool of himself too many times.

No, I don't either.

But you know one day, maybe it will be like that, Tom Cruise will use the money on a world literacy program to educate children world wide on how NOT to get suckered into a Cult. He's definitely qualified.

I can dream, can't I?
