What do Scientologists believe the BRAIN is for?

I spoke to a Scientologist recently and she told me that the mind is not the brain. When I was in - I got confused about the brain and its functions....and realized that Hubbard does indoctrinate one into believing it is not the BRAIN that makes us function - it is the mind, which one cannot see or find anywhere.

WTF?

This was one of the ideas I could not understand while I was involved with scio , albeit as a public , that the brain had NO real use or function.

( I would like to note at this point I could not log in as Smackthis and had to re-register , maybe I had not done enough posts or some such matter , anyway...)

Part of my recovery from the zombification has been to find out about the brain and this has led me to books on neuroplasticity ( The Brain that Changes Itself ) etc, plus a very interesting book by V.S Ramachandran.

I think these books should be essential reading for anyone, even part of school studies,to understand that the brain is opposite to what Hubbarse says it is.

You might want to consider reading "The Science of Influence" by Kevin Hogan (salesman by profession).
Although his book is oriented around sales, he does bring up a lot of good points about what affects people in their process of making decisions.

You also might want to see what Darren Brown has demonstrated on many occasions (subliminal persuasion).

The human brain has many activities going on at the same time... each one affecting the others. It's not just about the conscious parts.

Dr. Hubbard said the brain was a switching board, analogus to a telephone switch board, that the thetan used to control the body, pick up perceptions etc. Dr. Hubbard also said in DMSMH the nerves grew as a result of physical impacts, which explained why there are so many nerves in the fingers (Piltdown man couldn't afford gloves) and why we have large skulls which house massive collections of neurons. Thus, it follows, cave men beat each other over the heads with clubs, ran into low lying tree limbs and cave ceilings much more that is commonly understood, resulting in modern man's large brain.

I personally increased the size of my brain by beating my head against a course room wall trying to figure out if Dr. Hubbard was serious, off his rocker, kidding or just spaced out the day he wrote that chapter.

..yeh, the idiot (Hubbard) did try to fib us that one about the brain being a 'lump' resulting from banging the head against things... But it can't be true, since we all know that neanderthal men, as well as the Piltdown*, hit their women on the head with a club.. (or the femur of somebody they had eaten) Whatever, the habit would clearly result in women having a much larger brain than males.. But males of the human species have larger brains than women.. So Dr.Hubbard's theory is hereby debunked!

*The Piltdown man has been exposed as a fraud in which the top of a gorilla scull was attached to a set of human jaws.. But realize that the remarkable Piltdown man, far from being a fraud, proves the advanced surgical skills of the Piltdown! - They knew that the brain was a useless lump, so they surgically replaced their sculls for cosmetic reasons.

SMACK: I think you came up with another "one word to describe Scientology": ZOMBIFICATION :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical:

Dr. Hubbard was wrong.

Piltdown Man beat their women on the chest.

Some more than others depending on how large of a chest they wanted their partner to have.

Crap, I just took this thread where no man would ever expeect it to go.

Scientology has re-created the Piltdown man exposing his PILTDOWN TEETH! Those teeth attach themselves to you and your lifeline, bank account, family and suck everything out! YUCK!!!

I just had a cog: :duh: Scientology BEATS your pocket book until Scientology is convinced is much larger than it is - and them drains it!

I understand what you are saying programmer_guy , the point I guess I was trying to make is that at a zoomed-in, scientific level , the brain
consists of neurons and synapses and dendrites and so on. These actually have a function as does each specific area of the brain.

A bullshitgram does not cause paralysis down one side of the body or affect one's spatial judgement.

Science, neuroscience, showing us what the brain is and does.

Hubbarse used the "magic" of words to deceive.

Where's my club? Damn it. Maybe it's under the mamouth skin? Hells bells. Mimsey

I think this is another example of Hubbard's simplistic understanding (or lack of understanding) about the things on which he considered himself an expert.

If I am correct, the neuroscience is still split on the idea that the two (although physically the same) are not functionally the same.

The idea is that the mind, which is the functioning of the brain as opposed to the mere physcial structure of the brain, can at some point considered to be an emergence of the brain.

All that means is that an organism can evolve to a state where there are functions or qualities which cannot be found be reductionist methods.

But this is not what Hubbard means. I think he may have put that out their so he could claim that Dianetics was outside the realm of medical science.

True enough, they are not one and the same. Just to look at it in terms of storage capacity, the room just isn't there, not even if every brain cell stored a picture with all its details, and, the way it works is far more complex than that anyways. In addition, there are the rare but verified stories about how people have come back from massive brain injuries and operate totally normally with only a small part of their brain actually functioning. It's wierd. So what does the brain do? It INTERFACES with mind, and then on to the rest of the body. In Scientological terms, therefore, the brain is important when you need someone to withdraw a credit card from a wallet or to write another check, to, say, the IAS.
