The Spirit of ESMB

I thought it might be fun to start a thread where people post a picture or a song or a quote that describes for them the essence of ESMB - the reason we revenimus! I really want this to be positive thoughts only - there are other threads where the inevitable problems can be discussed.

When I think of ESMB I think about being a little kid after school and going down the road to knock on my friend's doors to see if they can come and hang out or play. One of the things that attracted me to Scientology was the idea of "the spirit of play" and that's what brings me here day after day, sitting out on the school oval under a tree at lunchtime eating my sandwiches.

To me, ESMB is laughter and fun and playfulness. It's also talking to interesting people about interesting things. It's those nights you sit there with friends and a bottle of wine and talk until dusk.

It reminds me of the cast of every play I've been in and the closeness and camaraderie and just awesome tight group feeling.

It makes me feel cuddled and loved.

I think it's true that ESMB is, first and foremost, about people.

So without further ado, this is my first offering for "the spirit of ESMB"....

I can't think of one video or pic at the moment which captures the whole thing for me but this definitely captures an aspect of ESMB: :)

"Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events. It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." - John F. Kennedy

Re: The Spirit of ESMB - In A Song (2 Versions)

By the time I'd read the second narrative account here at ESMB, only one song popped into my head: "The Story", made famous by Brandi Carlile.

That song has 'accompanied' every narrative I've read since - it plays in the background as I read along, with different snatches of lyric or music repeating, synched somehow with especially poignant parts of each story shared.

This version shows the lyrics and the singer's POV is generally considered to be one person speaking to another person.

This version, however, shows an alternate 'take' on the lyrics -- in that the singer is singing to her comatose self.
If you imagine the woman in the bed as her 'cult-self', you'll see what I mean. This version also shows the singer singing to her baby as the best reason to wake-up -- and I've no doubt those here with children will immediately understand this interpretation of the lyrics' POV. When the singer shakes the bed rails in an effort to 'wake herself up'? Chills. (This video is lifted from a television show, so there's takeaway shots/dialogue which is best ignored.)

Lots of songs pop into my head when I think of ESMB, but only this one pops-up every time I read a personal narrative...or when I'm about to post a disagreeable response.
I don't, because this song reminds me that a mile in another's shoes doesn't tell me which mile they're on in their journey - and they've already walked miles to get here.

I know one thing for sure ... some day (far away I hope) we'll all be looking back at our time spent here, reminiscing and saying things like "ESMB was incredible, we laughed, cried and fought till we were all blue in the face some days, but there was a feeling between us that is irreplaceable and unexplainable, it really was like a global family and I wouldn't have missed it for the world".

Gorgeous thread Purple.

To me ESMB is about unconditional (though sometimes tough) love.

I love the work of Alaskan artist Rie Munoz ( with the wibbly thing over the 'n')

And I love this image of a hug so deep the body of the child seem absorbed by that of the mother.
