The big secret is one of simplicity. It is a secret of immense laughter and joy. the secret is that most people, are most of the time exterior. Ha, Ha, ha!
They do not know it.
All the old tech was not to exteriorize the person from the body but to become aware that one was already exterior.
Ha, ha, ha.

Okay, I'm bored so I'll spend a second or three on this one.
It is not a secret, though suppressed by numerous abstractions over the years/centuries, the answers have been there. Unfortunately for humanity, such creatures as Scientology exist.
To me, our 'exterioirization', is not so much that you are leaving your body to go trip around/what-ever, but that as your sense of awareness expands around you, into the world, a part of you does, or can, indeed project an awareness beyond the confines of one's body.
It is my humble opinion that in order to do this there are several considerations to be made before you can become yourself and connect with such a device of nature, primarily words, the chatter around you, the chatter in your own brain. Unless you learn to use them/it, it tends to take people away from their inner center (through many devices imho), a being ends up dividing it's own self with them.
I suggest that Hubbard never conquered words. He created a bunch, he used them like a lawn-mower, and he bloated his con with them, but his mind was plagued with them, so badly that he could never, ever, become his real self, and, though it seemed like a good idea at the time, he poisoned the possibilities of many a good person, by creating more shit to
think about.
It is my opinion that words divide people, internally, thusly, that there is a point where either you control how and why you use them, or they will use you. In the latter instance, when you are used by words, you become a thinkin' machine, the less control you have over it, the further you travel from the inner being you actually are, the words become a bit more than your world, but end up cutting you off from it.
Try looking at it this way: When you think (in words) to yourself, you, or part of you maybe, is sending a message, and receiving the message. Who. Is. Receiving. It.? That'd be the 'real you' imho. The person inside. The one, who in simpler times/lives, could pick and choose the thoughts they hold, and use the 'thinking' as a tool of communication rather than abstraction. The consciousness has become divided.
Nobody did it better than Hubbard, because its still going on. Hitler (ack godwin!), Stalin, Mao, Caesar, and many more don't have a thing on the old windbag. He tried to control natural beings in his work, his favorite thingy (control), as because it is so flawed and abstract, has done more damage than good in the world. In fact, the 'good' parts are so spread out and diffused, they have no substance imho, none, nada, sweet-fuck-all.
The great over-think happened, as many times before, and it is never a pretty thing.
Though this is probably a fairly convoluted thought, hell, my mission is to say the same thought a thousand different ways, same almost as a 'thousand cuts' only not that.
'Self-centered' can mean a lot of different things, the ideal can be surprising. Namaste , please get better brother.
I leave you with this wee thought Petal, in hopes you can one day find yourself.
Adios non-comprende!

All!
