What's new

Who's next when Dave bows out?

As I was reading Jeff Hawkins' excellent Counterfeit Dreams at 3 am, instead of going back to sleep, he went into some of his trials and tribulations over Kerry Gleason. A) What ever did happen to him? B) Lets look at the various incarnations of Der Uber Cheeze.

El Ron - a nasty piece of work
Bill Franks - duped
Kerry Gleason - more nastyness
Dave Miscavage - nastyness deluxe

Am I forgetting anybody?

And when Jeff described his going to Flag for a meeting to sell his program to promote advertising, he was completely disabused of the idea anything could get done in a scientology democracy. So, Humm. Let's ask the old Magic 8 Ball: "who will run scientology when Dave bites the dust?

Will it be another sociopath?"

You do realise that whoever we identify as the logical successor to the Poison Dwarf will promptly disappear into the New Hole for fifteen to life?

Miscavige is I'll, but he hasn't quite started the 'Helpless in a trailer, kept pumped full of Vistaril' Rundown. Not yet.

After Kerry blew, he successfully used his skills & education during his time in the cult & became a successful entrepreneur in Boca Raton, FL.

Can I nominate Moxon and Shelley? A match made in Ethics.

Quite frankly, I think this is Helmut Flasch's game with his leaving and his joke of a "declare" of DM- but only when DM could no longer touch him.

When it all comes crashing down, and the culties are adrift looking for an anchor, he can step in and claim HE saw the abuses and "did" something, so he, former Power FSM, ought to be able to step in and set things right.

Mind you, I'm not saying I think he's skilled enough to execute on this plan, just that that's what's in his pointy little head.

The vast majority of cults fall apart after the death of their leaders. It is a minor miracle that DM kept is going for as long as he has. I don't think that the cult will survive DM's death or incarceration. Part of it is the imprisonment of the executive strata, but it's more the lack of "source". Unless someone comes up with a reincarnated LRH to provide more Tech, the cult's days are numbered.

The Tech will probably continue on in these little FZ / Indie communities online, but will dissipate in a few generations' time.

Maybe Marty Rathbun to save the day and to reap the rewards (buildings and all) and to establish a new,(ethical) reformed COS. He could become a very rich man if anything is left in Scientologys coffers. He has followers that he could lead back in.

Cults may just casually fall apart but corporations with access to a billion dollars or more don't.

Good point, but the whole corporate structure is such a cluster fuck that I'm sure Davey will make sure the money disappears and / or is basically inaccessible once he's gone. Ideally, he'll just be put in the slammer and the money used to pay restitution for cult victims. The rest that is in the off-shore accounts and may never be seen again.

What would have been your prediction for thirty years in the future in 1984, when Mary Sue Hubbard was in federal prison, her husband was wandering around in a bathrobe going on about how ancient psychiatrists invented sex, the IRS had a billion dollar to-be-paid bill (far in excess of its, then, total worth) looming over Scientology Inc.'s head, and a dwarfish high school dropout was in the process of becoming Scientology's supreme leader?

Many many years ago a big church was abolished by the head of state and property and money seized, that was King Henry the eighth.

It could happen again.

Here's the way I see it... When Steve Job's died, Apple wasn't doomed to failure the next day because it had YEARS of product in the development pipelines. So who the hell knows what will happen in 30 years to Apple. BUT, for the next decade or so they're probably fine. If they start calling the first generation iPod "new tech" in 10 years and charging $10k for it, they'll be in the same place as the cult.

The cult was much the same way. LRH had a group of devoted followers and enough product in the pipelines to keep the cult going for the next little while. Unlike CEO's, cult leaders are unpredictable and not easy to come by. I probably wouldn't have had a ton of faith in a dwarfish high school dropout to keep it going, but I wouldn't have expected it to fail in the next year or so. Maybe in the next decade or two.... Only because the cult was SO BIG at the time, and because so many of the cult members were able to lead somewhat normal lives while being in the cult. The batshit crazy has escalated to the point where there is only a fraction of the devoted followers left. Far more people see Davey for what he is - squirreling and repackaging old tech, running out of ideas, so the scam is now ALL ABOUT money where before there was at least some degree of exchange.

Really, I think the predictable end is playing out right now. Just about a decade or two later than I would have personally expected. Davey is spending more than he's taking in, and a few more well-placed lawsuits will finish the job.

Rathbun and his wife already stand to become seven-figure wealthy when their lawsuit against the Cult concludes, either by a verdict in their favor, or, more likely, by Miscavige wimping out and shelling out a million dollar plus settlement, as the High School Dwarf-out did with Debbie Cook.

I do have a problem with former cult execs reaping these golden settlement paydays.

Debbie Cook destroyed many lives ( most notably Maria Pia Gardini ) during her years as a stormtrooper for Scientology.

Now that fat cow and her husband get to live on the beach and sit around drinking mojitos all day? Doesn’t seem right to me.

And it’s all bankrolled by money extorted from Scientology’s victims, who were either receiving nothing in return ( IAS donations) or Hubbard’s unintelligible 65-IQ worthless tripe.

.

Except for a couple of things.

He's not a Scientologist anymore and, as far as I can tell, doesn't have any followers.

"I offer a simple program of rehabilitation of previously recognized abilities and education on universal truths and principles of spiritual growth. I do not offer a substitute for Scientology nor am in competition with the Church. I am only offering to share all the skills I have learned – from a wide variety of sources – to help those in need who once formally participated in Scientology but who now hold no hope nor intention of ever seeking help from the Church."

Plus, Miscavige and OSA have done a great job dead-agenting him to all CoS Scientologists.

Yeah I've come across that too. It's extremely unusual for a cult to make it as long as Scientology did. Odds of having a third cult leader waiting in the wings are pretty remote.

Since this thread is strongly in speculation mode, why not let 'er rip?

A girl who was noticeably unnotable met an old fortune teller woman at a department store super sale in the 1970s in Auckland NZ, who told her:

"I can see in your tea leaves that your mother is a scientologist, and so are your sisters, aunt, cousins. This does not bode well for you. You will be indoctrinated into that cult before you are a late teen. Your sisters, your mother, you, and your cousin will all end up in a para-military arm of that batshit crazy criminal organization disguised as a religion. After sometime you will get close to the leader of the organization. He will be a dwarf with some sort of physical problem, perhaps breathing difficulties, asthma, or something. He will have a dog that he dresses up in uniform and forces people to salute. I can see you are sceptical. You don't believe me do you? I assure you, this is what will happen in your future.

This leader person, everyone around him will be terrified of him, even guys twice his size and ten times his intelligence. He will have a wife who is his assistant. One day she will disappear, and since the leader will be a person who trusts nobody, he will have to rely on you to take up some of the duties his wife performed before she disappeared. One day the dwarf leader will come to an untimely end, due to massive pressures of some sort and on his deathbed will give you documents which block everyone on earth from taking the power and money he had, but he will have overlooked you. So you will become cult leader by default.

Your skill set, being derived from batshit crazy cult indoctrination and close proximity to a socio-psychopathically oriented narcissist will be appalling and you will bungle along as the "church", already on it's death throes will stagger along. One day you will hear the thunderous roar of a Harley and riding it will be a woman in combats. She is somehow familiar....She will be dishevelled but defiant and will be screaming insane, (which you will be well used to from the dead dwarf's behavior when he was alive). She will have a teenager dwarf-runt on the back of the bike. He will have been brought up under terrible karmic conditions; prenatally sentenced to a lifetime of hard labour in a desert compound with his mother. He will be there to take the leadership of the cult from you".
