Yeah and then they want to be so recognized and patted on the back for actually doing what a tax exempt organization is supposed to do without even having to think about it.
I would really like to have a journalist dig in and call their bluff. "Okay, show me all the people out in the world (not the ones inside who will just be parrots) that you've helped. We would like to interview them. We would like to do a huge piece on all the good works you've done so let's get down to business here."
They'd be able to assemble some stuff but nothing impressive enough to be like so many other charitable organizations, churches, etc. It would be lackluster and ultimately embarrassing.
No amount of good works outweighs their cruel acts anyway but they would not meet the standard of "public good" commensurate with or greater than what they take from others. No way -- not even close and what they do get done for others, is on the dime and initiative of individual members, not the organized church.
