Big Blue & bright colors from the 70s

There is a story going around to the effect that someone who is or was senior management staff said, the original light blue for the exterior of the Cedars Complex and/or those bright primary colors and super-graphics for the inside of the PAC Orgs circa 1977 - 1982 were a big mistake and the result of a single "druggie ex-staffer".

Is this just a Scientology urban legend? What is the source of this story?

Respectfully,

I was told by an S.O. That blue was LRHs favourite colour, and that the hideous bright colours, that grew brighter even in the lower floors, were to defeat the hospital/morgue effect.

Not sure about the myth, but that color is the cheapest paint you can buy anywhere anytime all over California
why ? because nobody wants it, my guess would be they put out a bid for a million cans from every hardware
store they could find with overstocked babyblue.

I remember when it was first painted what the local folks were saying about "Oh My God what an eyesore:omg::yes:

I think we can put that in the negative personal opinion category. That's cool!

Oh, a wise guy,eh?
LRH came at night and inspected the work at Cedars. He knew what was going on. If you look at his general sense of aesthetics, the loud color scheme fits right in.

When I first joined the Sea Org, around about this time, they had just completed painting the whole complex that famous blue color, as well as the bold graphics on the inside.

I thought they were overrated, but I can see why it was considered better than just a mono color, or something. This place was like a fortress, very grim.

You understand, the graphics painted halls were mostly on the ground floor, or close to it. Understand that in addition to multiple floors above this, there were also at least three basement levels below!

It was a bright colors, a big circle, half down and half up, angling, then switching, that kind of stuff. My opinion? It made the year and a half I was around there a tad more bearable.

Not that far of the version I've read which was

that LRH would have found a whole batch of cheap blue paint and decided it would be it!

:confused2:

Really, anyone believes that LRH will agree to buy expensive beautifull color , choosen by a designer, to paint his slave labour camp ???? :confused2:
What paint would David Miscavige use to paint the hole????

Also, did Artsy Ronnie ,really had any sens of aesthetics ????
I am presently channeling Sarah Northrup who says : No!:confused2:

Speaking as someone who spent his childhood in them and bought a house 15 years ago that was built during them, the 1970s were an aesthetic wasteland in the US. Avocado appliances. Orange / brown / yellow mottled shag carpets long enough to choke a vacuum cleaner which, when combined with the lime green wallpaper with yellow and white flowers looks like a camouflage pattern for an invasion of Las Vegas.

And the clothes. Great googly moogly, the clothes.

I'm not sure how much acid most of you Boomers were dropping in the 70s, but by looking at your interior decorating choices, it seems to have been a metric fuck ton. And you're wondering why Big Blue had a fucked up color scheme when you toss Laffy in the middle of that?

It can probably be assumed he was receiving adequate reports and photographs but do you know that he inspected for a fact?

From the sets and costumes used in early Gold photo shoots I think your "sense of aesthetics" comment has merit.

yeah I don't personally care for the color but a quick opinion poll on any freeway for the colors people do like
and you'd be hard pressed to find many cars that color :biggrin: or many buildings either.

I'm just sayin....:omg:

I personally am intrigued at the notion of an objective survey on the blue (not a Marketing Series Positioning Survey) of either Scientologists or public, but the issue of color and design is secondary to this thread. I completely respect both positive and negative opinions regarding the color.

I would like to determine the validity and source of the ex-staffer story.

Any discussion about why it was painted over?

Actually in the Complex?
Yep! It was Ceders of Lebonon in 1974.. Imagine my surprise when I started reading about Scietology, years ago, and realized they bought the hospital with the name on my birth certificate.. Small world. My family was never associated with Scientology directly..I just knew a few as a child growing up..but I was born there when it was still a hospital.

I think my older brother was born there also....but not sure. Around 1953 or so...

I'm hearing that Udarnik is not a fan of Harvest Gold appliances and shag green carpet. 70s design aesthetic bad. No argument from me.
