I wonder if the elevators still work. Probably, those old Otis elevators where indestructible.

I knew them well, as I lived on the top (seventh?) floor of the main building.

I shared it with about 5 other S.O. bachelors. It used to be some kind of operating room or something, as it had these large brackets fixed to the floor that must have anchored some serious equipment at some time or the other. My guess is x-ray machines. They were a bitch to clean.

One time, during which they had my seventh floor room utterly destroyed with rubble, glass and god knows what all over the floor, I caught food poisoning. Soon, it was no secret what had happened. the old conveyor belt dish washer had been loaded by estates guys with dishes that had dried for a long time, making it impossible for even that huge industial dishwasher to clean all the dried egg and what-not off. They had just plopped our food on top of it.

I remember laying there, sick as I had ever been in my life, unable to not stare at the inch-thick layer of construction rubble surrounding my bunk. The Qual Sec of Asho day came in, no doubt to assuage his conscience for giving me shit earlier for not showing up on post. The bastard. Didn't even bring me any water.

Was this in 1983-84? If so it was the chicken. Many many people got sick that day. They had some old chicken and knew it was old. They threw out what they thought was bad and served the rest. My mom was there and told us not to eat dinner as she knew the chicken was old. Scarey stuff.

No, I can accurately date this because it happened before John Lennon was shot, and they held a memorial in one of the chapels.

You just got food-poisoned again, bud. Not the first, probably not the last.

I wonder if they still have all that old hospital kitchen machinery working? Probably, they use to be made to last.

Depressing Color

What always struck me about "Big Blue" was that the exterior color

being a heavily grayed-blue was depressing looking like the vibes

coming from inside. ASHO never escaped the gray feeling from inside.

I wonder if there are ghosts left over from the hospital,

or just the ghostly feeling of out-tech generating the feeling.

C.C. always felt better to me.

Holy crap, I wasn't the only one. It was pretty much the whole place for me. Some areas more than ever. The basment was the absolute worst. And at one point I was a folder page type. I couldn't do my job sometimes. I was scared out of my mind.

Are you talking about all those tunnels under the PAC base?

OMG, I know what you mean, that place was spooky with a capital spo. I went down there a couple times when I was there 79/80 and it made you worry about getting lost, and never finding your way back, and shit. And it's all still there, and underground. Shades of dungeons and dragons!

That reminds me of something I read on the net, but forget where, about a

staff member who had to go down to the sub-basement of the complex and

found an insane group like a pack of wild dogs of staff doing some menial

job/s and they turned on her, but she handled it by indicating some truth to

them about their situation. It wasn't the RPF, but some other group. She

seemed to say that these people never left the area.

I realize this sounds vague and crazy, but from the feelings I perceived

I'd say it matches those.

In the RPF we used to have "muster" down there in that basement. Not to mention being sent on laps around the basement. They re-painted the pipes along the ceiling and improved the lighting so it wasn't quite as spooky, but yea.... definitely not a fun place.

After 9/11, we (the RPF) actually built benches which lined the halls of the basement so in case of a disaster the staff had a "safe place" to go. They were down there for probably a year after that happened.

Oh, and the RPF did "clean" the building before restaining it, there were numerous accidents with RPFers using a pressure washer up on the scaffolding to clean the building...

Oh god, now I'm gonna have techno-colored nightmares! You describe the tunnels accurately. We must have known each other. Staff study area was in the morgue! Little did we know at the time, but we were in fact the walking dead.
Still gives me shivers, that whole place.

Anyone know why the LACC is that color (of) Blue ??? what shade is it?

During the renovations I asked this question. I had to ask a few different people to get an answer. I was told that it was surveyed and blue represented freedom and so it was order by hubbard to paint it blue. I really don’t know if this is true or not.

Big Blue is a light aqua blue color and it is not painted. It is stained. The reason being is that part of Los Angeles is the epicenter of so much pollution, the Big Blue gets covered in dirt & grime. It's cheaper of them to put stain on the building than paint.

la_scientology.jpg

Problem is... they recently touched up the building with blue stain and instead of washing off the dirt first, they put the stain on it as is, and it is clearly recognizable what they did. It's nasty looking.

celebrity%20centre.jpg

This isn’t true actually. Each building was pressure washed prior to the staining. They also had to do some stucco (or cement?) repairs to the outside due to all kinds of damage, some due to the Northridge earthquake which cracked several of the PAC Base buildings.

I personally liked the stained blue. I don't know how it looks now, but when you are there in person it looks really nice actually. Sort of a textured matt blue, not different than the blue on this web-site. I really thought it looked nice.

I was on staff during the 1990 renovations. I volunteered and loved doing the demos. I demo’d some walls on the basement level of LAD and man are those buildings built sturdy! The walls were SUCH a pain the ass to demo. They were steel rebar with steel mesh sheets strapped to the rebar with steel ties (like twisty ties for bread only metal and thick) which were then sprayed with cement plaster. Those building were built to last. Then you had to use a pick ax to tear down the steel mesh underneath. It was a lot of work.

I hated working on the weekends, but I insisted on demoing my own office – yeah *that* was FUN. I also used a sledge hammer to flatten the air ducts they pulled out of the building – those were the thickest, strongest air ducts I have ever seen. I think they were also made out of steel.

Then there was this flap – kept all hush hush of course, no need to scare off the cash cows now. The ceiling tiles were discovered to have been made out of asbestos, the demo’s were halted and they (PAC Reno’s) had to find and hire a VERY expensive environmental company to come in and remove the asbestos – you know all legal and proper like.

I was paying attention. I notice that all the RPF’ers and other PAC staff were called off and all work stopped (shocker to see the S.O. do something like that so I was instantly curious). Well when those professional asbestos removers showed up guess what – THEY HAD ON FULL HAZMAT GEAR. Masks, suits, gloves, special boots. There was even a special truck they brought in to place the asbestos and take it away.

All I could think about was why the HELL didn’t everyone else who had been working on it have that gear on? Why were staff and public around this area that required all that gear to remove? NO public, staff, S.O. member or RPF member had ANY gear other than those paper surgical masks on.

Funny – I didn’t think if this when I read about the Freewinds…..

BTW – I never saw so many S.O. members get RPF’ed in one short period of time as when the PAC Base renovations were started. At the time I thought of it as convienent. Now I see it as more than coincidence. The idea that people were RPF’ed just to get those done cheaper breaks my heart to think about.

I was around for earlier reno's. First time I found out about asbestos in PAC. Where the hell is the class action lawsuit? I am so upset right now I have smoke coming out of all orifices.

Seriously. Why isn't there a class action? Notices of one could be posted on all relevant sites, along with instructions on how to get a free specific medical check for mesethelioma. Freewinds included in this. What might be harder to find is records of, unless subpoenaed, those who have already died or currently ill with cancers. Seems to be a lot of 'em.

There would be thousands upon thousands who might jump into this kind of suit, so that would cover one of the qualifiers for a class action. And while fear of OSA as kept many at bay in the past, when faced with fear of dying a horrible death just might trump 'em. Obviously there is overwhelming volumes of evidence of criminal negligence, with intent.

Right now I'm thinking swear words I'm not even sure what they mean. :hissyfit: :boxing: :shithitfan: :mindblow: :mindblow: :mindblow:

I am not sure how much they removed, what they removed or where they removed it from. I hear ceiling tiles but I think there were other things made out of or contained the asbestos.

I am also concerned about the dirt and debris that were air born during the work. I personally haven’t noticed any problems. How long does it take for symptoms to show up?

I wonder if there is a way to find out who did the asbestos removal I would like to talk to those people.

Just google it for info. The problem is that it can take many years, even decades to show up. Maybe someone else on board can answer Q about what company removed asbestos.

There were several times when they never called an asbestos crew and had us remove it ourselves.

Damn, this is really upsetting. When outside companies were used, I don't understand something. Surely they would have cordoned off any areas so no one would be affected while they cleaned up?
I remember those ceiling tiles were those flimsy foam spongy types. Asbestos would have floating right through in areas with those tiles.

Any legal beagles on board that can give insight into statute of limitations on this, down to earth probability of drawing up a class action , etc? I'd really like to know.

Statute of Limitations

In California, the statute is 1 year after the person first suffers the disability. However, California subscribes to the "discovery" doctrine, so the 1-year statute is extended to 1 year after the person first discovers that the disability is due to asbestos.

Yup. Very true. There were places in the HGB even that had asbestos, and the "Annex" (the building across from the HGB). I remember on more than one occasion doing "renos" and doing some asbestos removal. And that wasn't even while in the RPF.

Mesthelioma symptoms can show up anywhere between 15 and 50 years. 50 years. Well hell there's a bunch of other things that'll probably knock me down before that.

This should probably be posted in a thread all its own. I'm thinking that anyone who was public or staff, not just on Freewinds, but now also Big Blue in PAC should know to tell your doctor that you have been exposed to asbestos. It should be on your record.
Symptoms can be vague and mirror other medical causes. But if it's on your record, a doctor will know when it's time to do tests, if ever. Some of them are invasive.

I can only hope some of the recent research in cancer cells will be accelerated and there will be help in the future.
From what I've researched just today, it seems like class action suits would be impossible, but not, of course, on an individual case.

I'm trying to think in what ways those bastards were Not committing acts of genocide. I haven't thought of one. I'd like to see this story on Nightline too.

Reading this thread has caused me to remember stuff from a long time ago.

I remember running into people down there, and just assuming they where other s.o. members like me. They just needed a WHOLE lot of auditing!

I also have always remembered my first wife telling me about people being imprisoned in the basements, because they were having psychotic episodes. I made it clear that if anyone ever tried to do that to me, it would be war, and I'd try to kill the next person through the door, and escape to expose the crime.

I suspect that Kiethe wrote a knowledge report, which is why they always leave me alone.

And that still goes if your reading this, you motherfuckers.
