Re: Church of Scientology putting Alexandra Hotel up for sale

I was wondering how they were going to spin this to their members and the world. I guess they'll make a handsome profit on this sale given the original purchase price and what they're hoping to get for the sale.

Who's willing to bet against me that any profit will NOT be used for the renovations of whatever new space they buy but rather that they'll try to squeeze even more $ out of their dwindling public for this? C'mon, who's in?

50,000 sq. ft. for how few public? Seriously? :hysterical:

he Church of Scientology of Boston has decided to put the Alexandra Hotel up for sale and search for a larger space for its new headquarters.

The church bought the five-story historic landmark in 2008 for $4.5 million with the intent to renovate it for its new headquarters, and renewed its renovation pledge four years later. The former hotel is located at the corner of Washington Street and Massachusetts Avenue in Boston's South End.

But the 42,000-square-foot Alexandra Hotel does not meet new construction requirements from the Church of Scientology International, which now requires a minimum of 50,000 square feet for its Boston congregation's headquarters, said Kevin Hall, a spokesman for the Church of Scientology of Boston. The property has been boarded up and vacant for years.

"We've had changes in our programs, which are good for us, but it's taking more course room," Hall said. "We need more square footage than what the building has."

The Church of Scientology is putting the Hotel Alexandra on the market after deciding to pull the plug on its long-stalled plans of restoring the blighted South End landmark into its new Boston headquarters, church officials announced yesterday.

Just recently we’ve had some changes in our programs — some upgrades have caused a need for more space for course-rooms. With that, our international office told us that the Hotel Alexandra will not work because we need at least 50,000 square feet,” said Kevin Hall, a spokesman for the Church of Scientology Boston.

Hall said the overall project would have yielded only about 42,000 square feet, including 25,000 from the hotel and another 17,000 from the erection of a new building on a vacant adjoining lot — the site of the “Ivory Bean” brick row house that the church tore down in 2012 after parts of it collapsed.

But Marc LaCasse, a lawyer for the church, said the cost of rehabilitating the five-story hotel and overcoming a multitude of engineering hurdles were also factors in the decision to sell the building.

The once grand Victorian Gothic edifice — it was built in 1875 as a luxury hotel for long-term guests at the crossroads of Washington Street and Mass Ave. — fell into terrible disrepair, suffering from neglect and fire while remaining vacant for decades.

LaCasse said estimates for the project — all work needs to meet strict city historic preservation requirements because the former hotel is located within the South End Landmark District — ranged from $24 million to a scaled-back $12 million.

I gotta love Kevin Hall's comment, "50,000 sq. ft. is the minimum they need for classes."

Part of GAT must be Expanded Delusional Thinking. This is where one is exposed to series of carefully worded sales and you cognite that:

1. The war against the IRS really means something important.
2. Scientology is winning and expanding across the globe.
3. The barriers to past unrealized promises have been removed in a meaningful way.
4. Scientology is having a major impact in the war against the psychs.
5. The new building in Clearwater will have a global impact.
6. You, as a Scientologist, are very important.
7. The Boston Org will actually need a 50,000 sq. ft. building.
8. The onslaught of very negative press really is a pack of lies.
9. David Miscavage is a brilliant and capable leader, a true OT.

IMO, it's laughable and amazingly foolish. The people in charge haven't been able to fill a courseroom in Boston since the seventies because of the greed and continuous idiocy of Scientology.

This is an admission that they screwed up when they purchased this building to begin with.

These are factors which should have been fully evaluated prior to making the purchase! :duh:

(unless of course there was never any intention to rehab the building in the first place, which I suspected from early on)

I wonder how those who donated hard earned money for the "Ideal Org" in Boston are feeling about all this now.

:hmm:

They were regged with great urgency; they had to donate NOW NOW NOW to get this done.

I would think that at least some of them have had to realize that they've been totally screwed.

If the kult can't come up with $12 million, that's pretty telling.

I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more about this in days and weeks to come.....

Tony O posted about this story earlier this morning:

Scientology to sell the Alexandra Hotel in Boston
<snip>
We turned to someone who bought and sold buildings for David Miscavige while he was an executive in the church, Tom DeVocht, for some perspective on this news.

He pushed back on the notion that Scientology suddenly noticed that the Alexandra wasn’t right for the project. “A lot of thought goes into a purchase like that. Nobody buys a building for this program without a lengthy and involved approval process — and ultimately, it needs the approval of David Miscavige,” he says.

DeVocht worked closely with Miscavige, and remembers when the Ideal Org program was first being formulated in 2002 and 2003.

This made me think of that Jon Lovitz character on Saturday Night Live - the pathological liar. "Yeah.. yeah... The space is ... too small, yeah, that's it!... We need.... uh... 50,000 square feet, yeah, that's the ticket!"

Purchasing the Alexandra was just stupid. When your organization has rarely had more than 10 people on course, and maybe 3 people getting auditing what sense is there in buying a $12 million building that's falling apart. If the group was expanding, it still doesn't make sense. And everybody reading this already knows this!

I wouldn't characterize the purchase as "stupid", only because it was never about needing the space to service the public. Even from the very beginning of the Ideal [STRIKE]Scam[/STRIKE] Org Program it was never about that.

On the other hand, it's a nifty way to accumulate hundreds of millions of dollars worth of real estate using other peoples money.

If you're referring to those individuals who donated the cash for the building, then yeah, that was stupid.

Donating thousands of hours of my time was as well. :duh:

As far as Ideal Morges goes.....

It seems to me that the cult does try to buy somewhat "historic" buildings. "Landmarks."

What aspect of this might be related to the Cults Marketing tech of "Positioning".....I don't know.

But it seems to me that the Cult, likes these buildings to "show off" their "establishment...." And what better way to do this than by buying a building that is a known quantity in any particular city....a building that is already a part of a citie's history.

To bring these older buildings up to current Code......It seems to me that this would cost much more than buying a newer building.

Of course with SO slave labor, that might not be a factor.

Its solid proof that Scn Boston's fucked.

The public are pissed, saddened, disillusioned. Even if they wear their "uptone" attitude, the truth is all inside.

Who dares speak up in fear of being labeled "counter-intentioned" or "an unhandled entheta source contributing to the dark forces that brought about this catastrophe" bullshit.

They're fucked. No way will they ever produce real income from delivered services to float their canoe; that's heading down Shit's Creek without a paddle.

I'd bet that it's more than the public who are pissed, saddened, and disillusioned.

I'll bet that at least some of the staff are as well, and some may already be figuring out how to jump ship in such a way as to avoid being Declared SP, so as not to lose their family and friends.

Certainly not all of them buy the BS about the change of plans because they now need a minimum of 50,000 sq feet. :duh:

If any of them are lurking here on this thread and are in doubt on this point than please do yourself a favor and visit ANY Ideal Org that's already been opened and see for yourself how empty it is.

Get yourself on a plane, train, or bus and go visit one or more of the Ideal Orgs already in existence.

Find out for yourself that you are unwittingly forwarding a scam.

Then, register here on ESMB, pick a screen name, and introduce yourself. Or not. But please find out for yourself whether what I am writing is true or not.

The doubts you've already been having are real and you're doing a huge disservice for yourself and others by not personally investigating.

Check out this snippet from Jefferson Hawkins webpage:

LRH never put this kind of importance on buildings. In fact, remember what LRH said in the lecture, “The Genus of Dianetics and Scientology”:
“When buildings get important to us, for God’s sake, some of you born revolutionists, will you please blow up central headquarters. If someone had put some HE [high explosive] under the Vatican long ago, Catholicism might still be going. Don’t get interested in real estate. Don’t get interested in the masses of buildings, because that’s not important.”
LRH never talked about the necessity for huge, fancy buildings. Quite the opposite. He stressed that Orgs should make do with what they have, and build it up, and purchase larger quarters when they could afford them. He merely insisted that quarters be clean and functional.

And he never, never asked the public to pay for new quarters for the org. Orgs used to have a “Building Fund” set up for the purchase of future premises. They got new premises when they could afford them and when the traffic warranted it. These new “Ideal Orgs,” by actual inspection, are largely empty. Orgs do not need and cannot afford these huge, glossy premises. They are purchased using donations from public Scientologists, not org building funds. Which brings us to the next point.

Our org is well in excess of 50k square feet and I don't know that I ever seen more than 50 people in it at one time. And that only, maaaybe, at Auditor's Day. Every other event has, on average, 25 people. Course rooms have 3 at most at any one time. The auditing rooms are out of easy view so I can't speak to how many people are auditing.

That explains where David Miscavage got his idea.

Does anyone know if Miscavage ever did the OEC or FEBC?

I wonder if Davey cringes every time he sees a report that shows a sparcely filled Ideal Org.

The Ideal Org program seems to only be based on a dream. Aside from the delusional notion of an org magically filling up, there is no proven program for an org to get to Ideal from where they are (barely hanging on). Hence, it's a failed project. Why would anyone with a sound understanding of finance or business give money to the endeavor? How many hours and dollars were completely wasted?

:duh::duh::duh:

I don't think Miscavage insisted on the Ideal Org program as a method to extract more money out of parishioners. I think he's stupid enough to think it would actually bring people in.

Awesome quote by Mr. Hawkins. Wow. Show that to any Scn and they will be stuck, either in reply and/or in their mind. Cant sleep on that great evidence.

And you're right about the staff. I want all but one, whom I can't stand, to go free, Of all of them, I think Graham is on the verge, and JJ (if he's still there). He's a bright guy, despite the dulling disciplines and fear he must feel. He's got a kid, wife...man, Graham...just go. Be happy and free.
