Chaff and "flitter"...

IMO, this kind of thing can lead to witchhunting. We've had too many of those types of exchanges and threads already.

We didn't have any witchhunting. Some drama queens used the term
for effect.

Now fluffy, no arguments on this one please. Please.
I've had a hard day. Just agree! It's easy. I'll even say please once more.
Please.

So who is still carrying Elron?

The bolded lines sound awfully like Elron. :coolwink:

Koans are riddles without answers, originating within the practice Zen Buddhism. They are intended to shock our minds into a state of awareness and wakefulness beyond the analgesic zombie-walk in which we spend the better part of most of our days. Example:

Two monks, a teacher and a disciple, are traveling when they come to a river. Standing on the bank is a beautiful young maiden who bemoans the fact that she cannot cross the swift waters. It is a strict rule in the monks' order that they should avoid all contact with women, and so the student looks away from her and does not respond to her in any way. Meanwhile, his teacher has spoken with her briefly, and then picks her up and carriers her across the stream. Having set the maiden down, the monk and his disciple continue on their way.
All day as they walk in silence, the disciple is troubled: one of the central edicts of their order is to avoid all contact with women, and yet his teacher—who is a very pious man, and for whom the student has an enormous amount of respect—touched this woman intimately, lifted her up, held her to his breast, and bore her across the river. How could he resolve these actions—noble as they are—against the fact that they so clearly violate such a straightforward rule?

Finally, that night, after they've made camp and eaten their simple dinner of boiled rice and dried fish, the student asks: "Master, is it not the case that we are to avoid all contact with women?"

The teacher nods in agreement.

"But this morning, back at the river, you spoke to that young woman, you touched that woman, you carried her across the waters—"

"Yes, and I left her at the riverside. You've been carrying her all day."

Probably you get what this is getting at. Also, probably, you cannot simply sum up what is being expressed about human nature, about the nature of proscriptions on behaviors, letter-of-law vs. spirit-of-law and etc. If you think you can sum it up, then you aren't getting it, and if it could be summed up, then it would be useless.

Ryokwan knew it all along!

Ryokan
Timeline (1758 - 1831)

Like Han-shan in China, Ryokan is loved in Japan as much for his antics as for his profound poetry.

Ryokan became a priest at age 18 and took to a life of wandering. He eventually met his teacher, Kokusen Roshi, and settled down to study Zen practice, ultimately becoming his most esteemed student. When Kokusen Roshi died, Ryokan inherited his temple. But the duties and regularity of being temple master didn't suit Ryokan, and he resumed his itinerant life.

He next settled in a small hut he called Gogo-an on Mt. Kugami, where he lived by begging.

Ryokan's love of children and animals are legendary. He often played games with the local children, attested to in his own poetry.

His reputation for gentleness was sometimes carried to comical extremes. One tale is told that, one day when Ryokan returned to his hut he discovered a robber who had broken in and was in the process of stealing the impoverished monk's few possessions. In the thief's haste to leave, he left behind a cushion. Ryokan grabbed the cushion and ran after the thief to give it to him. This event prompted Ryokan to compose one of his best known poems:

The thief left it behind:
the moon
at my window.

When Ryokan was 70 and nearing the end of his life, he met a young nun and poet named Teishin. Though Teishin was only 28, they fell in love. They exchanged several beautiful love poems.

As Ryokan was dying, Teishin came to him and held him at his moment of death. It was Teishin who collected and published Ryokan's poetry after his death.

Ok. I don't think this thread has turned into one. I just worry sometimes about things like that because there have been times when that has happened. I would guess that this is an occupational hazard w/ forums. I like Ethics Particle and respect him greatly and hope I didn't piss him off with my comment.

Not in the slightest my dear!

I worry at times too, fluffy...I suppose it's the parent, husband, lover and friend in me that prompts that. :confused2: Probably it is similar for you and many others here.

As long as a fair few remain senior to the scene here and elsewhere, most hazards should never manifest - and those that do will be dealt with terminatedly.:wink2:

I like and respect you too. :flowers2:

When people on the board get worried about things getting too agrro, I usually am not one of the ones worrying. The posters generally have unspoken limits beyond which they don't venture. Sometimes things do get heated between
a couple - or three of posters but if it's just allowed to continue, the worst usually does NOT happen. In some discussions things will get heated but the fact that people DO get a bit worked up gets them to spit out stuff they may have been politely holding onto for awhile. It really does seem to be a bit carthatic at times.

I think the level of disagreement is really quite healthy. I have only rarely seen people "cross the line" - at least the line I think is unacceptable.

I have been learning how to be frank without being rude, but while learning, no doubt have been rude sometimes. And sometimes it really is just to have a go at someone. I have often been sarcastic and still am.
I am finding out about sarcasm and how much I should or should not self censor it - and if I should, why I should - or not. Sometimes I have posted comments
and later, away from the board I have thought it was just inappropiate and rude. But when I return to the board the next day it doesn't look rude at all, it just looks like I stated simply what I honestly thought about something.

I think this board provides a social context that allows experimentation that is not so easy amongst coworkers, colleagues and offline groups. And it is helped along by all the intelligent, good natured people who post here.

I think generally, it's all good.

Maybe the above will explain the title a bit better. Geezis - I thought this was a bunch of well read "EXes"!:p :melodramatic:

It appears that the likes of TL, Feral, Carmel and maybe a couple of others "caught my drift" - so maybe I was not too far off the mark.
