ESMB and The Freezone - let's have it out!

Only 125 more posts to go...so I'll tell one. I check in on this site sometimes and look to see who's online". 9 times out of 10 I see there are mostly freezoners and scientologists hanging about, so I roll my eyes and wander off.

Does anyone have an interest in a statistical analysis of this thread? Or the board in general?

I like to think of the board as evolving. That is, not linearity toward or away from destruction, but a homeopathic entirety that works through generation of small but instructive changes. This board is alive. The only way to kill it is stasis, admission, completion, inevitability. Let's not do that. Take a part in creation. If you like or don't like something, speak out, not in rejection but affirmation of the truth and beauty you see in your words and your own being.

This is of course complete 60's love and peace BS, but if you happen to have a tie dye t shirt, or a guitar strap with a peace symbol decaled on it, please show it now. With pride. One, two, three, four, we don't want your f---in" war!

Sure. Go for it. But please give the raw data as well as your conclusions.

Well, where do you draw the line Emma? Get rid of FZers, then who next? Alan doesn't call himself a Scio or a FZer and there are differences between him and Scio. But there are HUGE similarities too. But Alan has been, also, a huge contributor to this board.

Actually, as far as I can see, very few FZers come here. It is not as if FZers are coming here in droves to recruit every last one of you.

Also, "recovery" is not all about turning your back on Scio - or at least it isn't for a lot of people. One needs the full width of experiences and viewpoints.

Nick

I agree. But FZers need to understand the loss that exes, especially new exes or new visitors to ESMB, are feeling. Quoting and recommending squirrel Scn is not necessarily the best thing for them and the correct place for that activity is the FZ boards.

FZers have to apply a considerable degree of understanding as to how their use of Hubbard's techniques in their posts are received. That is the FZers problem quite honestly, and it should not be ESMB's or Emma's problem.

If FZers can't understand the effect that using Hubbard "tech" in their posts can have, then maybe they should hesitate to use it on ESMB.

FZers who do use Hubbardology on here should expect the use of cult techniques to be clearly pointed out to them. If they don't like that "invalidation" then they can leave and go and promote their squirrel tech on their FZ boards.

Recently I have had reason to question the easy going stance on ESMB to the Freezone.

I have read certain threads that concern me, have received a number of PMs from concerned members and visited a FZ forum and recieved an interesting "welcome". :eyeroll:

Originally I decided that FZers were welcome here because fundamentally they are Ex Scientologists. Now I have some reasons to be concerned about this apparent "affiliation" with the FZ and a perception that ESMB is a recruiting ground for and/or a free advertising venue to a larger audience for the FZ.

I haven't made any decision regarding this as yet and I'm looking for some feedback. Please don't get hysterical about this. I'm really after some thought out responses.

I want to know what you all think.
I realized that I never responded to this.. Or maybe I did but forgot?

I never percieved ESMB as a recruiting ground or free advertising space for the FZ. I do observe some FZ activity to that end, but I also observe other users comment about it... So I don't think it's that big a problem.

As for 'our' public image being somewhat tarnished by apparent affiliation.. Well, Enturbulation.org and OCMB are much more exclusively anti Scn. Stands to reason that they will freak out over the FZ here... Hey, these guys probably chased them over here!

I think ESMB is just as it should be. With scilons and FZ welcome. And being argued with..

I don't think this will scare off new escapees from CoS.. So far this board has had an impressive statistic on that. Many ex'es joining and telling their stories. And as far as I can discern the new members has found the board a safe place to be. FZ and all..

Anyway, this thread has negated any 'apparent affiliation' with the FZ I think.

Agreed. No one can prove anything about anybody. Perhaps the best you can do with someone is love them. And that is a tall tall task that it seems few are up to, possibly because no one knows if that is really the solution. Love across the board sends the game into nowhereland, too. At this point I am not able to get there. Maybe someday.

Agreed.

I was brought up in a Christian (Methodist) family and I believe the "senior datum" of spirituality is 1 Corinthians 13; in a nutshell, love trumps OT powers every time.

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1 Corinthians 13;&version=48;

The trouble is, there are so many degraded versions of "love" out there, including lust (OK, I plead guilty to that one!) and a 1.1 destructiveness posing as concern for others while intending to stop them, that "love" has got a bad or at least a murky reputation in many quarters. I don't offhand know how we solve that one.

Love is strong and suffers much, it will never be defeated, more than hope, more than faith, love it is the greatest! :happydance:

May I suggest one way to "solve that one", is to drop Ron's perverted definitions?

Remember he wrote Science of Survival while in Cuba with his kidnapped daughter to escape being sectioned by his battered ex-wife. So he wasn't in the best of head-spaces to define new meanings for "love". Perhaps his definitions of "lust" and "1.1" were simply a backlash against his self-percieved, SP, bigamous "wife"?

Just a thought. :coolwink:

Maybe, but I'm not just talking about Scientology here but the world in general. The Greeks had the three words eros, philias and agape (as I learnt at school), but we only have the one.

Personally, I don't have any interest in statistical analysis of this thread or the board in general, when it comes to who is using it (by groups). I prefer to simply directly interface with individuals, rather than categorizing them as "critic", "freezoner", "scientologist", "ex-scientologist", etc.

What are their interests? What are their positions? Why do they hold them? What are their intentions, what do they do for a living, where do they live, and most importantly, are they a thirty year old woman who would like to clandestinely meet me for even more direct interface?

Yes, but the "tone scale", "Chart of Human Evaluation", and "1.1" did not exist until the drunken, bigamous, wife-beating, child-kidnapper put pen to paper in a drunken haze in Cuba, while avoiding being institutionalised for his psychotic, brutal, perverted behaviour towards his "wife".

So the point I am making is that your quoted LRH terms and ideas about love are unreliable, because the source of them was clearly not released on the subject of love.

I am suggesting a solution to your voiced problem is to drop the concepts that stem from an unreliable, perverted source and then see what you are left with as regards the subject of love. False Data Stripping - if you prefer Scn words for what I am suggesting.

I expect you will find great wisdom in the Bible and the Greeks on the subject, and maybe your would not have a problem on the subject of love if you let go of the ideas on it from a perverted source.

I think there are many non-LRH english words for "love" and it will never be defeated by a wife-beating pervert!

References to help let go of Ron's ideas on love are LRH's "admissions" and Sara Northrup's submission to the divorce court

Let it be... let it flow naturally... don't get into any promotion of any kind... and that applies to FZers as well as to non FZers... this is how ESMB started... it kept the flow natural and let it happen... so let's just cut out any and all promotion... and just let it be... let it be... let it be....

Now these points in an argument are good for exes just getting out!

And if we all were just insular critics and anonymi, speaking only to ourselves, this point, along with the supporting evidence, would be unlikely to be made!! And no one would be exposed to it.

THIS is why we need Freezoners on this board, the more aggressive and evangelical, the better!

I say.

You can be quite sensible as well as a total dick, Alanzo. Versatile. :)

Oh wise Vinaire!

The only thing is Scientologists promote, without realising they are promoting, because Hubbard trained them to "handle" automatically. That's what scientologists do, they can't help it.

Their "handlings" using the "tech" is bound to upset those who are still recovering from the Church's handlings and don't want to be handled anymore. Those that do want to be handled can seek out the FZ if they want to carry on their Hubbardology.

Using LRH's inferior "tech" on a recovery board like this is inappropriate. Because of the insideous nature of Hubbard's "tech" and the fact that many exes haven't spotted it all yet, it is fair enough, in my opinion, to point out the faulty tech when someone is trying to use it on them.

Other than that, I agree, let the words flow, but your advice to cut out any promotion is a degree of censorship in itself isn't it? So none of us have the perfect attitude. All we can do is do our best.

So we struggle and stagger and do some good and make some mistakes and somehow the healing of ESMB can work its magic.

BTW Mike Goldstein is a splendid example of how to be.

I wish I could say an obvious consensus was reached and the answer is clear to me. I really do appreciate everyone's feedback. If nothing was actually resolved at least we all had a chance to get some things off our chests.

One thing I do know for sure is that one board cannot possibly please all of the people all of the time. Just ask Andreas :p .

ESMB was born as an alternative to OCMB and ars. I had earlier tried to change OCMB and it was a disaster. I went about it all wrong and it wasn't "mine" to do that to anyway. I made enemies left right and centre. Just ask Arnie, or Ladybird or Roan. We were bitter enemies. OCMB had a culture that was all it's own. It had evolved into a stable, highly critical board which suited a LOT of people just fine. In fact that was fine by me too, BUT I wanted it to make it more friendly to those exiting the cult who still had some good things to say about the tech without getting beaten down. This was the wrong thing to do. OCMB is not about a nurturing environment. That's not to say it can't be that - it can and has been at times, but primarily it's a hard edged, critical message board.

ARS had turned into a spam ridden war zone that frightened me for years. ARS was definitely not a safe place for exes who needed support as they worked their way out of the trap. Again there are some great posters on ars, but the general feel is not exactly welcoming.

So when it came time to launch the board, I had to make a decision about who it was aimed at. I thought a lot about who should be excluded. I thought about making it exclusively for exes but realised that some of the wisest and most experienced people who could offer support and information to exes are people who have never been in a cult. So I decided against that.

Then I had to make a decision about the Freezone. I've learnt a lot since I started the board but originally I had guys like Alan Walter and Mike Goldstein included in my loose definition. I didn't know Mike very well back then but from all I had read about him and Idenics I knew I respected him and knew he had a very rich history in Scientology that would make for fascinating reading (if he ever decided to join, so when he did I was really pleased). I had known Alan Walter for years and remembered how unbelievably helpful he had been to me when I was a terrified, newly out ex who still thought there was a lot of merit to Ron's Tech. And the stories he told! I didn't want to leave the likes of him out either. So to leave out "The Freezone" was not an option for me either.

Then when I wrote my original FAQ, I worded it as follows:

What is the purpose of the board?
The board is for Ex Scientologists of all "denominations" to get together and talk things over.

Some leave the church because they are forced out by some insane ethics order yet remain true believers; some left of their own accord because it stopped making sense; some find the tech truly workable but management corrupt; some find the earlier tech workable but call the Golden Age of Tech the "work of squirrels"; some don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater and some feel that there is no baby at all.

Some practice Scientology alternatives, some practice Freezone Scientology, some use bits and pieces in their daily lives and some want nothing more to do with it.

It is likely that most people are happy where they sit in regards to Scientology. They have their minds made up about it and no amount of discussion will change that. This board is not meant to be a vehicle to plead your case, reconvert the fallen or preach your brand. It is designed to allow people to connect up, gain some understanding of our differences, learn to respect each others opinions and find some peace with it and hopefully within ourselves.

Who is considered an "Ex Scientologist"?
Anyone who has broken free of the restraints of the Official Church of Scientology and is "allowed" to read & post to the internet.

Another reason I didn't want to exclude anyone was that I wanted ESMB to be the opposite of the church. I wanted people to feel comfortable to be able to accept or reject any belief or belief system that they chose to. I never wanted to be Big Brother or the Thought Police.

So that is a bit of history and where my head was at when I started the board.

So what changed?

Nothing really.

Like everyone else I'm human and can tend to be swayed or influence by popular opinion and criticism. I had a lot of people in my ear about the perceived direction ESMB was taking. So I thought I'd throw open the question and see where it went.

I realised a few things over the course of the last few days. I also did a little bit of research on ESMB and came up with a few statistics. Your milage may vary with this "analysis" but it was surprising to me to discover the following:

There are 4580 threads on ESMB. 70 of these are in "The Freezone" section and 104 in "Independant Field" section. Combined this is 3.8% of the total threads on ESMB. ESMB has been online for 539 days meaning there is an average of 8.5 new threads every day or 59 per week. Of these 59 new threads, an average of 2 are started in the combined FZ and IF sections.

I also looked at the top 100 posters to ESMB. I counted maybe 15 of those who I would consider "hardcore" FZers and none of them in the top 5 posters.

So the argument that ESMB is a Freezone board is statistically false.

So why is there this perception?

I think it sometimes goes like this.....

Poster A makes a post.
Poster B makes a reply that mentions the FZ or the tech in some way.
Poster C counters the argument.
poster D counters the argument
Poster B defends their position
Posters E, F, G, H & I jump in and counter the argument.

So what do we have? A whole thread that was turned into a tech discussion by the people who don't want to discuss the tech.

There is nothing wrong with this. It's how things work. But when I see this happen and I see people complaining about "techies" on the board, I have to shake my head. Out of the 9 imaginary posters in the above example, there was 1 who wanted to promote the tech, yet the perception is that all we talk about it "the tech!" I do realise that this isn't always the way it goes, but it does happen a lot.

The only way to prevent this is to disallow anyone having a positive word to say about LRH or "The Tech". This is EXACTLY what I started ESMB to avoid! Can you see the problem?

Another thought that occured to me is that FZers can be extremely "restimulative" (excuse the scientologese but I can't think of a better word).

We all lost our religion. For me at least it was devistating. I lost my profession, my philosophy on life, my understanding of the human condition, my friends, my social life and ultimately my marriage. I think most people experience similar losses when leaving Scientology.

So to have FZers still talk about "life with The Tech", can stir up a LOT of unresolved feelings & emotions. There are two sides to this coin.

As FZers, you need to understand how hurt and damaged exes are. They have read the data and come to a (sometimes) painful decision that Scientology is not for them. This DOES not mean that they are not feeling the loss of something major in their lives. They may also be feeling betrayed and used and conned. These are some pretty powerful emotions to have stirred up on a daily basis. FZers have made the decision to continue along a certain path and that is totally fine with me, but you must understand that flaunting that position on a board mainly filled with exes, is going to stir up a lot of stuff.

On the other hand, when us exes were Scientologists, we fought with all our might to be allowed that freedom. We WANTED to be Scientologists and resented anyone who told us we were mad. Now just because "we" changed our minds, doesn't mean that everyone else has to. Do you remember being a gung ho Scientologist? I do. I wanted to save everyone. I was as annoying as hell. So sometimes when you think a FZer is proselytizing and you want them to stop, maybe you are seeing a little of your old self in that person and you don't like it. I realise this is a generality and I'm not pointing the finger at anyone, it's just some thoughts I've had on the subject.

The Freezone isn't going to go away. Whether they have a presence on ESMB will not stop anyone who wants to go down that path. And IF a person who is seeking the FreeZone happens to stumble upon ESMB they will certainly be given every argument as to why this might not be a good idea. If they still want to go down that path I say they absolutely have that right.

So........

In summary, nothing is really going to change in structure or rules, but I hope that something more subtle will change. I hope the many exchanges below have allowed people to get a deeper insight into how people generally feel about freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of thought etc. I hope each "side" can respect each other a little more and adapt their posts to be a little more understanding of others on the board.

This doesn't mean you need to be all sweet and agreeable. Hell no. But when you see a person who has just escaped the cult and are in a terrible state, the last thing you should be doing is advertising FZ services. The same goes the other way. If someone has just uncovered and resolved a huge problem in their lives with some processing, I think it's completely inapproriate to respond with "You're just a brainwashed cultie and it's not real and you are a moron".

Oh God. I've gone on and on. This was much longer than anticipated. There is only one more thing I need to tell you.

Alanzo & I are friends again. :p

Thanks for the post, Emma.

I think this thread should run on to make the 1,000 post mark inside 7 days before it terminates. Then people can refer to it lovingly for the rest of time.

And that's great that you've made up with that <censored>. :)

I agree so long as their evangelical posts are picked up and challenged. The danger that I think some of us saw and possibly prompted Emma to start this was that the FZers would get away with spouting their cult dogma without being challenged, especially as they were posting their dogma so often and repeatedly.

Let's hope the FZers have a greater understanding now of the position of many exes, who don't want their unbridled cult PR. The problem is the FZers don't see what they say as dogma! This is the result of Ron's versions of Orwell's "Newspeak" and "Doublethink".

Remember one of Ron's slave-making techniques was to repeat points over and over to wear down resistence - hence KSW on every course, etc. This is another technique he probably learned from Orwell's 1984. "Love is hate", "War is peace" until the party members achieved doublethink. "The tech works" "This is your only chance" etc over and over until even squirrels repeat the dogma "the tech works" while busily altering the tech! :duh:

Just read Emma's message. Well done Emma! Now get some sleep!
