quote:

Well, it takes an ideology - not just a "religion", for good people to do bad things. For example, take the ideologies of Stalin's Russia or Hitler's Germany. People can be encouraged to do really nasty things in the name of some set of BELIEFS - religious or otherwise.

Religion holds no monopoly on the bad actions seemingly "good people" can take to bring about some crazy version of an idealized "better world".

People who grasp onto some ideology and then set out to enforce it on all other people are the basic culprits, with religion and Scientology existing only as an EXAMPLE and subset of that much larger human tendency. end quote

There were lots of similarities between the communist regime and Co$ - the communists did not acknowledge or allow religion, and thus they promoted the cult of anti-religion....
which, in many ways, was like other cults....

Thanks Caliwog

Oh, and don't forget the Censored by Marty section on my blog... how awesome would THAT be, a comment from Mayo to Rathbun on Caliwog's blog. Holy crap, I'm getting star-struck. Next thing you know I'll be refusing to take Mark Bunker's calls*!

Those sorts of comparisons are overblown and inappropriate, Marina.

For all the evils that Hubbard or the subsequent management have worked, their worst acts do not compare to the horrors of the soviet state, the holocaust, or other major travesties of human history. A better comparison to Hubbard's perfidy are the tales of fraud & abuse perpetrated by such figures as Bernie Madoff, Ken Lay, Jim Jones, Aimee Semple McPherson, Warren Jeffs. As grandiose as were Hubbard's view of himself and his church, his impact was nowhere near as consequential as he sought to promote in the minds of his followers.

True, but if Hubbard's vision of a "cleared planet" ever came true, I have no doubt that a planet run by Scientology would be any less terrible.

Remember what Tom Cruise said about a day in the future when SPs are something we just read about in the history books. Hubbard clearly stated that 2.5% of the population are real SPs, right? Well, there's only one way to make us SPs history.

Not that such a society would last -- I'm sure we'd all die of oxygen starvation, as we'd have to defoliate every forest on Earth to have enough paper for the O/W writeups.
