You'd better have a sturdy arc for those wombats and party animals.

In Sydney, one of the maximum security prisons has a wildlife rehabilitation centre, which some of the prisoners work in as a rehabilitation program. They build all the aviaries and ponds and so on, and care for the injured wildlife.

Well they had a wombat come into care. They built an enclosure with a sturdy colorbond fence (sheet metal and metal posts for you 'mercans). This was inside the wildlife rehab area which was fenced, and that was in the middle of the prison grounds. Max security, remember. :innocent2:

Well the wombat simply rammed his way out. Left a huge hole in the metal fence where it was ripped apart. They fixed the fence, recaptured the wombat, and put him back in. On his third escape, they decided they had enough public embarrassment from the press that was razzing the hell out of them and let him remain an escaped prisoner.

Lol! That's how the first wombat got his head cut. Ramming through things!

Great story, Kooka! :) I've seen that facility on the news. Great aviary, but it's all on concrete (being a prison), not such a great environment for the wildlife mammals.

3 of these photos are from the Sydney zoo. Really happy wombats there - they seem to enjoy the attention. :) The smiley one is a baby.

Musta been a bad shot. Their aviaries were fantastic when I saw them. Not all on concrete. The all had greenery in them. And a big pond for the water birds. Purpose built enclosures for every species of bird. Very impressive facility.

You should go have a look. You can go in there. Just tell them you are a wildlife carer and you've heard about what they do there. They'll give you a tour. Don't forget your get out of jail free card. :D

This is the sixth time I've returned to look at those wombats. Look at those tree climbing claws. Do they really let ya pick em up like that, or do ya have to have raised them from a baby? I'm in love. :eyeroll:

Yup, the Sydney Zoo does, under close supervision. Claws are kept filed smooth and they are very tame. There is a schedule for a special presentations with different animals. Petting and picking up Koalas is allowed, too, but they poop a lot, could get messy. Also the Wallabies (like a small kangaroo).

Sydney Zoo is very nice. :)

It was when it was first being built. I'd LOVE to go visit there and I will! :)

Well...I'm forced to take my own advice here...

"I do think we have some subtle cultural differences between us that we should be mildly aware of (even regionally here in the US) and give each other the benefit of the doubt when a question arises as to meaning or intent of our posts.
At the very least...don't assume. Ask for clarification of meaning when something is not clear to you. Maybe this will help us avoid mis-communications in the future.

Hats, my Lovely, wombats use those claws to dig holes in the ground . . . they are monster earth moving machines  They don't climb trees . . . that's what our koalas are for.

This from http://www.gondwananet.com/australian-animals-marsupials-wombat.html

Wombat is not only one of the most interesting Australian animals, it is the largest herbivorous burrowing mammal in the world. It may look slow and stocky, but it can run 40km/h and it has got a larger brain than all other marsupial animals. It is the closest relative to koala which developed to a tree dweller while wombat lives on the ground where it burrows holes and eats roots and leaves. Here are some wombat facts and wombat pictures, and some information about wombat food, wombat behavior, and different species like Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat and other Australian wombats.

Nice pictures there also.
