In the 80s I got some asparagus cans and they worked great: long and skinny and steel. In 2004 they were still long and skinny but no longer electrically conductive. I did the magnet thing walking around a supermarket and was surprised by how very few cans were steel still, and almost all of the steel ones were ribbed. Eventually I found some tomato paste ones. They were too short for meter cans, but I wanted them for something else:
