Riverside Mission

Oh the south basement, facing University. That is now City Gym. There are other "basement" spaces to the west and north, too. Lots room for spooks down there! :D
 
Yes, that is now City Gym.

And the old stairs have been removed. Bent has separated the bottom from the top. I guess that he had a good reason to do so.
 
You lived in the Lower course rooms, below the Comm Course and the Intro room.

There is/was a lower hall below the main floor hall, that went past the pool, from HCO (below the Gym closest to the freeway) to the other gym behind the main floor mens room. That gym was later split into 2 floors with Qual on the lower floor at the end of that lower hall.

Actually, there was a floor put in or taken out (I can't remember which now, but I'll look it up) on the old gymnasium, which is now the ballroom, where the Centennial Dinner was located. This is now on the level of the first floor, in the back, so yes, there have been some changes and alterations. Much of the top floor, the small rooms from when it was the "Y" are now art studios filled with local artists. The "band practice room" space on the roof is gone now, I think.

Both gyms that I knew were on the same floor. From what I have read, the pool was below that level.

I had visited the premises with D-Rad about 3 years ago and we didn't go into that area. I'll take a look sometime soon because what you are describing doesn't make any sense to me. :) (The gym is on the right as you face the building.)

As you face the building, One Gym is on the right, which is where HCO was under.
The other was straight back behind the main doors and just past the back hall.
As Sweetie says, it is now a main ballroom on the main level.
The Old Comm Course is the other ballroom on the right of the front lobby.

The back side of the other gym (main ballroom now) is along the alley directly, not separated from it like the right hand gym.
If you look careful on that part of the brick, you may see the replaced bricks and mortar on that alley wall.
The bricks were taken from the building that was across the street that became a parking lot.

I looked on the roof, and it seemed that it was different than my recall, but I could not make a picture of the difference.

Yeah, I read about some people assigned lower ethics conditions tearing down that building which became a parking lot.

The Band room was in a handball court in a separate small building out back. (It has since been removed.)
This should not be confused with the handball court that was on the roof.

I am re-reading the first edition of Bent Corydon and Nibs' book which has since been updated : L Ron Hubbard Messiah or Madman .

I really like this and recommend anyone who has not read either version to do so. It's especially good reading for those like myself who were around PAC or the CA missions in the late 70's and early 80's. What went on in those days with the missions being taken over was atrocious. Much of the whole 'field' collapsed. Things were really never the same for the public and missions of scientology after the WatchDog Committee and Int Finance got their hands on Riverside.

Bill Butler was a reg (married to Debbie Butler who ran the Comm Course)
Jim Hamre was a reg (former Comm Course sup)
Mark Lutovsky was in Div3 treasury
Rick Ansert was in our music band
Dave Grenier was in Div6 (formerly married to Diane Grenier)
Cheryl Booth (according to my conversation with Corky, Cheryl will no longer even talk about SCN)
Eric Boettcher was indeed on estates
Scott Shortridge was supposed to get married to Penny Davie but this didn't happen (I won't say more)
Todd Carter played the music for my SCN wedding
Jim Swartzel (Div6), if I remember correctly, was sent to Flag for the hard TRs course
Rosie Ayers was a Comm Course sup
Jeff Kovach was a reg, one of the best in SCN terms, I remember riding in his Porshe
Darci Kovach was an auditor that was married for a short while to Jeff
Bruce Dickson was not Div2... he was estates
Tim Shortridge ran the Credit Union and then became a reg (married to Corky who I knew in college)
Corky Shortridge joined staff when I recruited her into SCN; I knew her in college when we were students living in the dorms
Ted Kegel (Div6), if I remember correctly, was sent to Flag for the hard TRs course
Bill Strickland was not in Div4 (married Sue Green, Div6)
Peter Orr was a roommate with me along with Steve Rothchild

Roger Coy was in Div6 (his 2D was Loretta) and was the drummer in our band
Nancy Yazbeck was a nurse (married to Joe Yazbeck)
Brad Petroff was in Div6 (Loretta once teased him about having to pick a cigarette brand when he joined staff)
Bob Parcell was in Div6 and played a Fender Rhodes piano in our band
Richard Sanborn I remember as being a student on either HQS or HSDC
Rene Ansert was an auditor (married to Rick Ansert), she was my M1 auditor
Steve Rothschild was a course sup for HQS and HSDC and a former roommate (apparently went to Div2 later)
Robyn Kauffman was a wonderful person who died many years ago from complications from a prior head injury before SCN
Keith Olson was in the military who got out as a concientious objector, if I remember correctly

Anyway, lately, I've lost a lot of interest in posting to SCN related sites.
Eventually, I'll probably be gone and done with it. :)
I have other stronger interests unrelated to SCN.

That's good Programmer Guy! Hopefully, eventually everybody is ready to move on with life.

But I do think it is valuable and useful to get some of the local history written down, and to be able to get in comm with others, like on this board. :)
 
I see that PG did not agree with the posting positions of a few of the people.
I assure you the list is true and correct and is NOT from my memory for the Month/Year that is listed at the top.
As PG has previously stated he believes that he left prior to my joining staff, though only by a few days it seems.
He knew Corky and Tim, and describes that Tim was the Credit Union Manager.
The policy of the Credit Union to make loans to the Mission Staff and Public with the Regs making employment verifications was the heart of the matter when the Riverside Sheriffs Office raided the Mission.
I was staff before the Credit Union was bought (or formed, I forget which), and after it went bankrupt.
All the bad loans were bought up by another credit agency who proceeded to send most of them in for collection.

Nothing against Bent, Todd Carter, or Tim Shortridge, but from what I read of that time, Todd was telling the truth.
That is from my personal experience.

The positions that PG states were correct at one time, but the list I have provided is also correct for it's time.

There are 148 names on the main list and 16 on part time or study.
It sticks in my mind that there were 160 plus staff at the time that I knew I could not list off all their names.
It stuck in my mind that up to that time, I knew every person's name and could say hello, but after that time there were a few who I had no idea who they were.
Imagine working and almost living with that many people for more than a year or two.

PG, have a good life, but I hope we will meet some day still.

Paul Ney was formerly married to Sue Ammons (Sue Ney). Paul was my "counter part" guitar player in the other music band (there were 2 bands and Roger Coy played drummer in both). Paul played a Gibson SG guitar through a modified (master volume control) Fender Twin Reverb amp. When I burned up the transformer in my Ampeg combo amp, Paul let me use his Fender Twin Reverb for awhile.

You might want to add 2 people to your list:
Jim Miller who was once DofP (who blew before you joined staff)
Greg Kaufman (married to Robin Kaufman) who was on the "gang bang" ethics meeting against me when I agreed to come back for one final talk (at the behest of Becky Dickson).

Yes, very good.
But Jim and Greg, I both remember.
Greg not so much because I did not talk to him much.
Greg was the HES for a long while I think.
I think of him mainly working on the Div 2 Regs as a hobby horse part of his job.
I do not remember what happened to him, or why he did not make it to the time of the list.

Jim I remember a little because he was there for a little while after I started staff.
I think of both of them as very serious and focused.
And Jim would come down the stairs and talk to Roger for a while in the lobby before being called up by someone for something.

I also had forgotten Paul Ney, Sue's former husband.
I do not think he was there very long after I started.
He was an EO, or a course sup downstairs?
Not sure but that is what comes when I think about him.
I remember thinking the dichotomy of his position and Sue's being low and high on the Org Board.

That just made me think about Bent modeling himself after LRH, with Sue working as the ED Communicator.

Any one recall the time Todd Carter made some deal with the Riverside Prosecutor giving up the 411 on the mission finances in exchange for payment of loans he took out for Scientology services. This came out after the church was raided.
What pissed me off about being on staff ( enjoyed most of my time there) was
the financially cannibalizing staff so they could do services and auditing which per policy where included as perk for joining. Once I learned the policy game
I never paid one dime for service or auditing but didn't receive much either. LOL
 
The time of Tod Carter informing to the police was after I was there.
I have only read the online info, and of course Bent's book about that time.
I was there for the time that Tod informed about though.
How about you, The Clam?
 
In another thread there is Bob Beilhart (and Leslie?) who was a Div 2 Reg on the list above.
He was also a body router before that.
He is in the 100K list with Travolta.

Thomas & Cathy Steiner are in the 35K list.

The last I heard about Bob Beilhart was that he and jerry langafeild had a wise consulting business together. Apparently doing quite well.
