What's new

Riverside Mission

I used to love doing my security rounds-especially early in the evening-with Pinky the rat riding on my shoulder. It used to freak the shit out of people!

Pinky was a very tame rat, and rode like a pro on my shoulder. She had good TR's :wink2:

Several times people tried to tell me it wasn't good in some way, but I always blew them off, accusing them of being 'stuffy'. :D They couldn't come up with any 'tech' that condemned this, so I got away with it.

If you don't give me tools to use in my security duties, then I create them!

Rmack,

Was that "Pinky" as in "Pinky and the Brain"? :)

I know the answer to that question, If you can believe it!

I attribute it to the fish body oil pills I take every day.:coolwink:

The guy whom I inherited Pinky from (forget who, some portly admin type) told me he got the animal so young, it was just a pink object about the size of his thumb. He raised it from a couple days after birth, in other words.

Pinky was one tame rat. He was also a sneak thief!

I found peoples rings in his cage, which I pretty much left open at night when I was there. He would always come to me if I came near his space. He wanted to go flying around the building, that's for sure.

I was just making a wild guess. "Pinky and the Brain" is a TV cartoon where one of the two rat characters is maniacal and wants to take over the world. :D (I'm a Dad and it shows from time-to-time.)

Now, don't get me wrong, I looked for the owners of the rings, who where always astonished that Pinky had their rings. I just liked rattling their cages. :stickpoke:

I found lots of stuff not that valuable (except to Pinky, of course) in that room. Paperclips, pens, bits of shiny paper, you get the idea.

Oh, it was a good guess. I should watch that cartoon.

I'm a huge fan of 'The Penguins of Madagascar' Very funny.

Hehe, the exploding plastic bag full of stove gas wasn't the only peccadillo I participated in.

While I was lifting weights and exercising to get ready for my first real rock climb, The janitor Eric and I rigged up a top rope belay and climbed up the side of the building for practice. A few times.

I remember one time while I was the security guard, some of the guys came into the building in the middle of the night and stole a safe they had brought in earlier. Just to make me wrong, I guess. I mean, I was only one guy in that whole building. No gear, no backup, nada. Just stay up all night watching the place, call the cops if it hits the fan.

I spent most of my time between hourly patrols reading in the excellent occult library which I think was Bent's.

I once got paid $5 dollars for the week. The most was 50 bucks. Once.

They sure want value for their security money, huh?

I remember the theft of the safe.
It was not you they were targeting.
It was Mark Lutofsky, the Tresury Sec, who was the last out of the office and would forget to lock it.
I am trying to remember the name of the skinny bean pole who was with Dale Radcliffe and I think another conspirator.
I remember them laughing about the weight of the thing, and that it was so difficult to get down the stairs quietly.
They were worried about you catching them, but I know it was about Mark.

They did some ammends for that prank because Bent was pissed off.
Mark came into the office in the morning (first to arrive) and freaked!
Mark had expressed the idea that the safe could not be stolen without the thief being caught in the act.

I also remember watching you climb the building once.
I enjoyed that very much.

I have almost no memory of Pinky, other than seeing the room with the trash on the floor and wondering why.
Where did Pinky stay in the day time?
 :D

Thanks, I never knew the details. Could the beanpole have been Bob Barr? Just a shot. Like I said, being off during the day, I didn't spend much time with everyone.

No kidding? I don't remember who was in on that. Could I get you to reveal your name and/or post? Maybe in a private message?

 :D

That's been so long ago, I don't precisely recall. Somewhere up stairs in a small office where her cage was.

Yea, upstairs around HGC is what I have as a location.
Which makes me question that location because Mary was the Sr. CS and her Ivory Tower was nearby.
As I recall though, that was why I questioned the trash on the floor so much.

Sue was married to Barney Ammons, a former EMT ambulance driver.
Barney was a very good person to me, as was Sue.
They were my favorite people there.

This is a little clearer now.
Sue was not married to Barney at first.
I attended their wedding in the Mission Inn Church.
I was in love with Sue also, but kept my mouth shut because I knew Barney and her would be great together.
Also I liked Barney a lot too.
I was invited to the wedding and attended in spite of my emotions.
Prior to my own wedding, that was the last wedding I ever attended.
I cannot remember her last name before Ammons.
She may have been using her maden name when I knew her.

I remember Pinky the rat!

So Pinky was a "packrat"- I remember Pinky as being very tame, you used to play a game with me of letting me pet him on the back, rump and tail a little bit when he was riding around on your shoulder. Do you remember that? I think you would make me read your mind or something like "what am I thinking?" It was some kind of a guessing game like that. Pinky was cool, I remember some people being creeped out about her, but I always loved animals. Native packrats collect shiny things, funny to know Pinky was at it, too. Decorating his space! No wonder I thought that place was fun to hang out in!

Somebody slightly older than me took me up to the Rocky top of Mt. Rubidoux and taught me rock climbing there, bouldering and a little bit of rappelling. Was that you, or was it Eric? I think I was going to RCC at the time, or maybe still in high school.

Does anybody know if Jimmy (James) Cupp is still in? And his wife (Sarah, Sally?) Last I heard he was at INT.

Is Jonathon Lawton still in? What about his brother George? We went to high school together.

Bent's building is coming up on a centennial, I think he is planning some publicity and some kind of a celebration. Might be a good excuse for a reunion and meet-up of old ex's. There seem to be a group of us here on ESMB, maybe enough for a posse! Anyone interested, email me.

Hmmm. I think you must be confusing me with another of Pinky's mounts.

And no, it wasn't I that took you climbing at Mt Rubberdux.

Eric was tall, dark hair, I think a bit curly, clean shaven. He had a very noticeable 'tic' sometimes where he would jerk his head every few seconds, and had a distinctive way of speaking. Heluva nice guy, though.

I was six foot tall (I still am, at least close!) light brown, some say dark blond long hair with a beard. I trimmed to a 'stache and sideburns for a while. I wore John Lennon type round wire frame glasses.

Whoa! Those fish oil pills pack a wallop!

While thinking about the above, I had a flash of me petting pinky's head while someone behind me petted the rat while having a mild case of the heebie-geebies. So, I might be the rat transportation in question.

Also, I got a vague, isolated memory of doing experiments to see if people could see pictures.

It's been a long time.

Am I gonna die of pneumonia now?:)

I worked for the Riverside Mission as a freelance auditor. Bent paid me to audit the staff. It was great to see the picture of the old YMCA building. It brought back fond memories. I had a great time there. I really enjoyed the staff - they were a great bunch of people. A lot of the names you mentioned I recall. Bent paid me really well and when I completed my assignment, I returned to AOLA where I was a review auditor. I was at the Riverside Mission in 1979. I audited Robin Tierce, Jessie Elder, Renee Gilbert, Maryann Langanfeld, Gay Williams, Deena Speed, Linda Wilson, Carol Pineda, Louise Hamre, Debbie Petrie, Rocky Green, Richard Sanborn, Scott Glover, Bob Parcell, Laura Hudson, Yvonne Prince, Jeff Lewis, Chris Ruane, etc. No, I don't have a great memory - I just have some old files with these names on them. I worked under Darci Kovach in the HGC. Riverside Mission then was huge. That's why they had to hire an outside auditor to audit the staff. But Bent cared enough to to this for his staff. They made relatively good money for a Scientology organization. Everything went downhill since the Mission Holders meeting and the Finance Police in 1982. Bent and the staff that left or were kicked out are still the lucky one though.:cheerleader:

Apparently, Sue and Paul divorced (after I left) and then Sue and Barney got married sometime after that.

The Mission Inn (not really a church anymore to my knowledge) is a very old building right there near the former Riverside Scientology Mission.
It's about 1 block north and 1 block west of the former Riverside Scientology Mission.
It's across the street (Orange Street) from the Riverside Library.
The architecture is old Spanish style.

A loooong time ago, before California became a part of the United States, it was one of the several Spanish Catholic missions that go up the western part of California.

The Mission Inn has a few little businesses in it, as well as, some apartments upstairs.

Marriage ceremonies and receptions are sometimes performed there.

loiepoo,

Bob Parcell was in Div6 and was the keyboard player (Fender Rhodes piano) in our band.

Darcy Kovack (C/S and auditor) was married for a short while to Jeff Kovack (a reg).

Carol Pineda died in a motor cycle accident sometime after I left. (I am pretty sure that her boyfriend regrets this to this very day... if he survived it.)

I don't remember any Louise Hamre but I do remember a Jim Hamre (a reg and former Comm Course sup).

Regards

Wow, You were there just before or after I was released for OP-Z.
Having trouble with the time track then at the moment.
I have a cold.
I know every one of those names.
Gay Williams was nee Chacon (shacone).
I think Richard Sanborn (pretty sure) was the tall skinny guy in Treasury who helped steal the safe.
Robin was married to Bill.
I baby sat and cleaned Jim and Maryann's house for a while.
All of the names did time in the Div-6 body routers and or as auditors.
Maryann was a Comm Course Sup and an auditor.
Yvonne Prince, Jeff Lewis, Chris Ruane were auditors.
I do not remember where Louise came from, but but she was an auditor also.
Darci is described in another note in this thread.
Most of these people had auditing hours built up from their Div-6 awards, or from their husbands, or from their own pockets before they joined staff.

Some of them co-audited each other.
Bent had/has a good heart, but sometimes could be a bit too nose for the money.
Some staff were "nattering" about how they never got auditing, while others did.
The public had the priority for auditing and we had plenty of those.

We'll always have Pinky!

No worries Rmack, the past can't hurt us unless we let it! I'm actually enjoying hearing about everything that I missed at the time! (Some rather hair-raising adventures, I'll bet most other Missions of the time were sedate in comparison.) No wonder I liked hanging out there! I always liked a good adventure!

Yep, that was me! I'm quite sure that you and I were the rat transport and rat tickler in question, unless I started a trend with some of the other girls there. The reason I petted the back part of Pinky was because I was afraid of the bitey front end! I was quite giggly back then, so would have been making a ruckus. It has been a VERY long time...I'm amazed I remember any of this. I thought you were very cool back then, with so much responsability, sorry to hear the job really sucked!

Yes, I can picture Eric as he was then, and it must have been he who took me for my first rock climb. (I later went on to do a lot of mountaineering in the Rockies and the Sierras, Outward Bound survival training, climbed in Yosemite, etc, so it took!) Thank you, wherever you are! It was a small group of us who climbed on Mt. Rubidoux, mostly guys with maybe a couple of girls, 'cause we shared gear and ropes, so maybe you were there too. I was indulged and tolerated by many back then, being younger, and not seriously buying into Scientology training. I don't think anybody back then ever made a dime off me, but I sure could raise people's tone! Probably why I was allowed to hang around. I've always lived a charmed life.

We were all playing various mind games and experimenting back then with discovering our "powers". I think it's cool we get to reconnect via ESMB. Seems like a whole lifetime away, doesn't it?

I'm so glad Rmack, that you got out and went on to live a great, full life!
