Very interesting. I remember those tapes and other tapes where El Ron clearly used the “Fabian” as you described. I’m embarrassed to say that I had actually never looked up the word and was going off of El Ron’s usage which distinctly was elusive, strategically unlocated & transiently ephemeral.

I’ve been M4ed, M9ed and starrated on Hisself’s SO stuff with that word…and my “understanding” of it.

I think I better go back and annotate Part Fourteen.

Gawd, it never ceases....a few years ago I knew an X-SO member who like to hides his phone number from caller ID so he could appear " Fabian " when he called anyone ( including his fuckin family ).

Anyway, these days when I get calls from the orgs ( Yes, GD it they never get the word - these f'ing "secret" declares have a downside!) they are from " Unkown Caller 000 000 0000 " and I ask if they are ashamed of where they are calling from and they explain the computer does it and they have they no control over it - and I ask how the computer got my phone number and they, of course, hang up.

Do you recall how he defined it?

I thought i heard it in an S.O. tape ...and (this was ages ago) thought he was talking about moving around from place to place, not fixed, appearing and disappearing unpredictably. Sort of off the radar. It was in reference to his self-proclaimed "wholetrack successful actions".

If my recollection is correct, I think Ronnie needs a visit to the word clearer.

Yes, that is my recollection as to how Ronnie defined Fabian. I am just saying he ran the GO/OSA in part on the actual definition of Fabian. Covert ops, no full frontal attack but actions intended to wear down the target.

Look up the definition of theta in the Century Dictionary On-line. Theta is not the Greek symbol for life as Ronnie proclaimed. It symbolizes death. Check it out.

Ron was a self-serving A-hole.

Ok, i don't like to be " had " so I went and checked wiki- Ted was exactly right !

"Abbreviation

In classical Athens, it was used as an abbreviation for the Greek θάνατος (thanatos, “death”) and as it vaguely resembles a human skull, theta was used as a warning symbol of death, in the same way that skull and crossbones are used in modern times. It survives on potsherds used by Athenians when voting for the death penalty.[2] Petrus de Dacia in a document from 1291 relates the idea that theta was used to brand criminals as empty ciphers, and the branding rod was affixed to the crossbar spanning the circle.[3] For this reason, use of the number theta was sometimes avoided where the connotation was felt to be unlucky - the mint marks of some Late Imperial Roman coins famously have the sum ΔΕ or ΕΔ (delta and epsilon, that is 4 and 5) substituted as a euphemism where a Θ (9) would otherwise be expected."

From Ron's Journal 67:

"Well now, as you may have suspected, I do not necessarily lead a quiet life. I was not much made for an Ivory Tower or even a desk, and my -- my adventures through the past few months have been very interesting, to say the least. So long as we are elusive - or Fabian - we grow strong, so I have examined the statistics, and we have grown in numbers to the degree that nobody could quite put a finger on what we were doing. Therefore I have maintained considerable security and shall continue to do so on the activities in which we are engaged, but that does not make them a secret, of course, from Scientologists. It has been my lot to introduce technology which was antipathetic to the best laid plans of mice, and to suffer the consequences for the next many years, and the cycle of public opinion is now rising again on the subject of myself. I was supposed to be - according to the press - a complete devil or fiend, and now it seems that I am a man who is changing our times, and all that sort of thing. Well, I frankly could not care less what the public thinks about me. I am solely interested in getting the job done."

"40. Hubbard asserted that the Sea Org is "fabian", and redefined that word to mean "using stratagem and delay to wear out an opponent" (JCA-84). Hubbard wanted the Sea Org to be seen as "a determined but elusive and sometimes frightening group". He also asserted that the Sea Org has "tough discipline", and that "Only those members who are not used heavily aboard [ship] or on mission seem to go slack." (JCA-85)."

Thanks mucho, Toady. Paul’s gonna turn it into an ebook when I’m done. Man, thanks Carmelo. Obviously El Ron knew what it meant...everything always meant what Hisself meant it meant.:coolwink:

Appreciate you bringing this up, Pal.

Your usage was correct, Face.

As pointed out the use of Fabian in english is derived from the actions of Quintus Fabius Maximus in countering Hannibal on the Italian Penisula. The secret of his 'success' was to avoid engaging Hannibal at all costs. He basically 'dangled the bait' of the last remaining Roman legions all over Italy and wore out Hannibal's troops having them chase him around Italy from one region to another without ever actually engaging Hannibal's forces in battle. It was not a popular strategy with the Romans at the time, as the Romans considered it 'unmanly', but without question he saved the Roman Republic from conquest by Carthage by adopting this course of action.

As you put it: ...never having to front up, face up or fess up ... is a fair rendition of Fabius Maximus' strategy. :coolwink:

The Fabian Society was a group of British Socialist intellectuals who believed the best way to promote the interests of socialism was through an indirect non-confrontational approach. They chose their name after Fabius Maximus, the foremost example of indirect non-confrontational 'combat'.

Fabian Fa"bi*an, a. [L. Fabianus, Fabius, belonging to
Fabius.]
Of, pertaining to, or in the manner of, the Roman general,
Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus; cautious; dilatory;
avoiding a decisive contest.
[1913 Webster]

Fabian policy, policy like that of Fabius Maximus, who,
by carefully avoiding decisive contests, foiled Hannibal,
harassing his army by marches, countermarches, and
ambuscades; a policy of delays and cautions.
[1913 Webster]

-- From The Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.48

Fabian Fa"bi*an, a.
1. Of or pertaining to the Roman gens Fabia.
[Webster 1913 Suppl.]

2. Designating, or pertaining to, a society of socialists,
organized in England in 1884 to spread socialistic
principles gradually without violent agitation.

The Fabian Society proposes then to conquer by
delay; to carry its programme, not by a hasty rush,
but through the slower, but, as it thinks, surer
methods of patient discussion, exposition, and
political action. --William
Clarke.
[Webster 1913 Suppl.]

NO! See my other post. The key to Q. Fabius Maximus success was his never engaging the enemy but forcing the enemy to fruitlessly chase his own forces all over Italy.

Guerilla warfare is the process of utilizing small groups for raiding enemy forces and then having them disappear into the terrain. That is nothing like Fabian tactics. Fabius always made sure Hannibal knew where his forces were, just out of reach. :)

No wonder the Greeks kicked Scientology out of their country... they knew that the clams had a Crashing MU on the letter "theta"... :dieslaughing:

... Look up the definition of theta in the Century Dictionary On-line. Theta is not the Greek symbol for life as Ronnie proclaimed. It symbolizes death. Check it out. ...

That is true. Theta was used by the classical age greeks as an abbreviation for 'thanatos' or death.

However, there is more to the story. The symbol of theta was often represented by the circumpunct, i.e. a circle with a dot in it. The circumpunct was also used by the egyptians as the symbol of the god Ra & the sun, which in turn represented illumination & eternal life.

The greeks were greatly influenced by the egyptians, and from the about the 2nd century bce much of greek philosophy merges concepts from egyptian mysticism and wisdom schools. The doctrines of Hermes Trimegistus & the later gnostics are derivative from this combination. For adherents of these schools and others the theta symbol, as represented by a circumpunct, was commonly used with a mystic philosophic sense of transcendent wisdom and life.

... Ron was a self-serving A-hole.

Very true. No argument there.
