Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973
Thank you although it is quite a lot of credit to give me there.... One thing I do believe is that by doing so I have avoided some of the ugly fighting on esmb. And I do appreciate the regulars on your thread. It is fun.
I appreciate your modesty, Maria, but I believe that the credit I gave you was appropriate. The early success of the thread was due in large part to me and Carmelo playing off against one another. I was Abbot, he was Costello, He was Laurel, I was Hardy. We were good at playing off against one another. He would post rock music, I would post Classical, I would post pictures of family cars and he would post pictures of hot rods and racers. That formula has worked well in the entertainment business and it worked here.
When he left the Board, I took up with Ma. That was not a complete solution to him not posting here. I did my own thing, which some people like and some people detest. To my credit, I kept the thread going/ For a while i was alone at the helm and we started hitting 3,000 to 4,800 views in one day. The 4,800 was our all time high for one day. This was not that long ago, maybe towards the end of last year.
I remember noticing that many nights there would be over 100 lurkers reading the thread at any given time in the wee hours of the night, Pacific Standard Time. Just before you showed up we started to taper off. Views were as low as in the 300's for a day. For a while, no matter what I wrote, there wasn't much response.
Carmelo and I stay in touch by texting and an occasional phone call and we had decided to get to two million views and then if there is no more interest, just let the thread die out. I was giving my best shot but and was keeping things going but I was only averaging about 700 a day. At that rate, it would have taken 5 more months to hit the 2 million mark. I was losing interest and thinking of kissing off the 2 million goal and letting the thread die out.
That's about when you arrived, Maria. As I read your posts, I saw you as a person who I could play off against, maybe I would be the George Burns and you the Gracie Allen, something like that. As you grooved in, you brought Hats back which was a nice think and then Leon returned after fighting a serious medical condition which also helped. Let's face it Maria, you are the opinion leader around here. Many people really enjoy your posts and that is why they are on this thread now. I enjoy reading your posts. They are honest and educational, and yes, I play off of your posts sometimes in an attempt to stir up interest on the thread but always because you are a good writer and have a lot of valuable wisdom to share with us.
I'm sorry but that is the way I see it. I am virtually fully talked out on the subject of scientology but if I play off of your posts, they give me more new things to write about. I think we now have a real good thing going here similar to what Carmelo and I had several years ago. My compliments are not platitudes, they are honest and the are given because someone earned them. Giving you the credit due you for the recent success of this thread is the least I can do for you.
BTW, I am happy that you were able to avoid a lot of the fighting on other threads and also that you like some of the regulars here and are having fun here.
