Ah Ha Great minds think alike. I bought a used Fender Squire Bullet from Guitar Center for $50, put some Canadian Rylander Vintage Sound pickups in for $90 and the thing became my garage beater. When I get frustrated on some project I come in and play the blues for a few minutes to bring my blood pressure down then I'm good for another hour or so.
Now I wish I had waited to buy some Fender Texas Special pull outs for cheap. Lotta young thrashers are opting upgrade from Specials to Seymour Duncans. Its creeping elegance.
But your right, CNC has made precision in guitars plentiful. Its the metal parts tuners and bridges that are slop. The Chinese seem to go beyond tool wear out just to get quantities out the door. Tolerances suffer like mad.
The best locking tuners I have seen are the PRS lockers. They have a thumb screw that tightens down on the string so it cant slip.
I've had two Squier Strats, the one with the dodgy neck and genuine Fender parts I've been talking about, and one with a lovely neck (crucial of course) and poorer quality fittings. Talking about locking the strings, the one with a bad neck would never go out of tune no matter how badly you abused the whammy-bar (playing the intro to 'Sorrow' for example), the other one goes out of tune if you merely look at the tremolo bar.
I took the pickups off of the first Strat and replaced them with EMG's. Big mistake as it's a massive pain in the ass having to loosen the strings and unscrew the scratch plate just to replace the f'ing battery. So now I've got a couple hundred quids worth of pickups lying in a drawer collecting dust. Perhaps I'll restart my old eBay account.

I did plenty of looking for tips to deal with this problem on the 'net I can assure you, and all to no avail. It just boils down to the quality of the parts themselves. With Strat #1 I used to be amazed at how much abuse the tremolo bar could take. The instrument stayed in tune whatever I did to it. With Strat #2, one touch and it's all over. I did everything I could to try to cure it. For a start I need to get those Fender machine heads on there.

There are many reasons for why a guitar can't hold a tune, and they all have to do with friction. For one guitar, all it took was: Fold a small snippet of 500 Grit sandpaper, pull it through each saddle slit in a certain angle, grease the saddle and the strings, wherever they touch the saddle, up with peg soap. Bingo, problem solved within 2 minutes and an investment of approximately 5 cents.
