There's an old style of British Musical Hall Dancing termed "step dancing" which was a popular form of soft shoe dancing from which tap dancing evolved. I've often thought the "moon walk" likely came from that tradition. Several of the individuals featured in your video were aware/knowledgeable of/in the tradition. The British Music Hall forms were of course derived from even earlier forms of folk dancing & street entertainments.

Can you find any examples of this. I mean when I look at George M. Cohan or Dick Van Dyke they don't seem to emulating a black influence. But this moonwalk thingy just seems so Cotton Club. How would the British influence have filtered in to Harlem? I can't envision it without a little help. I will look up_

Yeah...they're kinda a little left of vaudevillian, don't ya think. Like the act might have opened for Lenny Bruce or something. :wink2:

AAAIIIIIEEEEEEEE!

The show is "Follies". It is a show about "looking back nostalgically at things that never were" show. It is a show about "the dream of being a performer" as opposed to the realities of life. The show is a about folly.

It was a financial flop in its first run BUT it is the one show that damn near every stage & screen actor in the u.s. & u.k. have ALWAYS wanted to be in due to its incredible wealth of material. For this reason it is CONSTANTLY in revival damn near everywhere.

a small taste ....

The dumbing down of the country reflects itself on Broadway. The shows get dumber, and the public gets used to them.

Automatic Writing - A one night class I took.

I took a one night class in "Automatic Writing" from these amusing two ladies who are identical twins and who had given me a "reading" on Sunday night.

Here on ESMB, on my longer posts dealing with politics or issues of the day, I often just let the keys start typing without much if any thought going on in my mind so to some degree that is automatic writing.

The twins teach that Automatic Writing is always a form of Channeling a spirit. They say that you can get anything you want, or things which you do not want. For example, automatic writing can be done in a foreign language which you are not consciously aware that you know. Music can come over, both lyrics as well as notes and melodies, you can pick up poetry, art work, do paintings and so forth.

I chose to address my Dad, Max, who died in January, 2002 at age 88. He was sitting in my space with a lot of charge, almost ready to explode. This was the case, I really felt his mental presence in my space. I let it rip and he my right hand started writing a mile a minute as "Max" spewed forth a lot of charged items. The handwriting was reminescent of Max's.

He let loose with a tirade. He was extremely disappointed in my divorce which was finalized on Sept 28th. He was heartbroken that his construction company which I joined back in 1974 was on the verge of closing down. He thought that my ex wife and I had spoiled both our Son and our Daughter. He complained about the values of society declining from those heady days both before and after WWII. He said the best times of his life were when I was attending elementary school. My brother, 3 years younger also attended. Those were the days of the Cub Scouts and the first year of the Boy Scouts and Scout camping trips. Max said that life made sense in that nostalgic period. It was pretty much a lot of fun, a united country with a set of values similar to those of the Founding Fathers, etc. and a booming economy where everyone who wanted to work had a good and reasonably paying job.

Max said that he was in touch with his two Brothers and that they had not changed at all, he is not in touch with my Mom, his wife of 55 years, who passed on in 1994.

He is very disappointed that I gave up my Jewish religion to do Scientology and now that I see the evils of "Organized Scientology" which he tried to tell me about but found me unwilling to listen, instead of returning home to Judaism, which he feels any normal person would have done, he is further annoyed that I continued with Psychics, and parapsychology type movements.

He did say that Edey is the best of the current groups of friends. He attributes this to her Mom being a Russian Jew like his Mom and Dad. He thinks she is a beautiful woman and speaks a lot of wisdom. He also says that Lorinda is a sweet person. His message is to stay close to Edey and do what she tells me to do since she makes the most sense of any of my new friend

Automatic Writing (Cont'd)

After I had been channeling my Dad for nearly 30 minutes, one twin told me to switch over and channel Franz Gerl, an 18th century musician and associate of the Mozart family, whom I claim to be a reincarnation of. They told me, that I could relearn composition from him.

I mis duplicated and just put out that I wanted new musical lyrics first for a new song and after I had the lyrics down, then I was going to ask for the melody. I failed to specify a specific person however.

What I got was a lot of poetry and meanderings in German. I am only about 40 to 45% percent fluent in German but the writings were coming in very fast. To be honest, there were no new words coming across that I did not already understand Everything I wrote down was using words from my 40-45%. However, using that limited vocabulary, I was writing quite fast and furiously without thinking. Also, the sentence structure was sound and I was using past and future tenses quite well where as in my conscious knowledge of German, I stay a lot with present tense and have to think out the past and future tenses carefully; the automatic writing featured only my limited vocabulary but freely used the past tense and the future tense with no thinking required and no comm lags so that was very encouraging. I wrote down several short poems and anecdotes, none seemed to make much sense or have any artistic value but I will review them today and perhaps type them up and see if there is anything of merit.

This is an interesting experiment to do and is lots of fun. I am skeptical as fo what is going on. To believe that this is real Automatic Writing, I would have to receive tunes and melodies with words to match. I would have to also be able to transcribe them onto music paper so that they could be played on the piano. If I can do that or pick up how to play the guitar, as the twin psychics say is possible, only then will I be sold that this is valid.

This is interesting. Looking forward to hearing your results of doing this.

Kindness Story

In 1969 the US held the first Draft Lottery for the Vietnam War. Millions of men between the ages of 18-26 were riveted to the TV getting drunk, stoned or both at “Draft Lottery Parties.”

The bottom line was that if your Birthday was selected in the first 50 or so you were 100% gonna get drafted if you were classified as 1A (eligible for immediate induction). If you had a 2S Student Deferment (like me and the other dozen or so guys at my draft party) then your number would be used in a subsequent annual draft pool when your deferment was gone by either Graduation or dropping out from or failing college. Although I had initially been 4F due to my “Post Concussive Syndrome” my status had been revised to 1A in ’68 (that’s part of my “What and Why” story if and when I get around to finishing it). If your # was 50 to approximately 140 it was incrementally shrinking odds from 99% to 50% to 1% and from 140 to 240 or so. From around 240 on up to 366 you were pretty much home free for life, short of WWIII.

This lottery had a huge “pool” and the subsequent lotteries would be only males turning 18 in that calendar year. Those that had mid-range probabilities had an indeterminable draft risk in subsequent years after their 2S was gone. As are the vagaries of the “Laws of Probability” our little group that night had the whole gamut of “Winning to Losing” numbers. Two of us were “bullet proof” for now—yours truly and my to this day life long friend Tom. The rest were in varying degrees of “peril” with the exception of me very, very close best “Bud”, Randy. Randy’s # was 5. Randy was gonna get drafted now or when he lost his 2S in a year or two, if he made it to graduation. Randy was struggling and on Academic Probation and was and eyelash away from being expelled after current term grades and he knew it…we all knew it.

Randy could fix anything mechanical or electrical. He was our “go to” guy re: how to get chicks. Randy’s girlfriend, Alice, was an Honors Student, a real knockout and sweet, sweet, sweet. His father was an electrician with an 8th grade education that grew up in a tarpaper shack in the depression—a very cool guy that on weekends would stop by our “Animal House” with a case of Lager quarts, work on cars and motorcycles with us and BS for hours.

After Randy got over his hangover he did what he always did; Randy accepted his circumstance, kept his sense of humor (and he was v-e-r-y funny) and pragmatically worked up a plan. The last thing that Randy wanted was to wind up in Vietnam so he decided the best thing was to join the Coast Guard. Problem was, as he soon discovered, was suddenly a whole bunch of folks were trying to join the Coast Guard. But, Randy being Randy, he found a way to “land on his feet”. The one thing that, up to this point, had kept Randy’s GPA just high enough to stay in school was that he was the First Trumpet in the College Band and Orchestra. He was good, real good, and used to joke that he learned to play the trumpet so that he could master “Triple Tongue” technique and that that was the “secret” to his success with all the “Foxes” we had envied him for dating up to, and including, when he fell in love with Alice.

The Coast Guard accepted Randy’s enlistment in a heartbeat and after Basic Training he was to be assigned to a Parade Band. Once he was in Randy, always the pragmatic one, determined that playing trumpet for the rest of his life was not a way to support Alice, whom he had become engaged to before he left for his hitch and, due to his aptitude test, finagled his way a few months after completing his Basic Training to be sent to “Electronics and Radar Man Specialist School”. Randy wanted to learn something that he could use after his hitch and that he knew he could be good at.

Randy completed his Specialist School with high marks and received his duty assignment—Hawaii! He was ecstatic, proposed to Alice during his pre-deployment leave and plans were made that they would be married in 1 year after she finished her Degree in Elementary Education. A happy man he was the morning he boarded his Coast Guard Transport flight to Honolulu.

On the flight was Fred Martin, whom Randy had gone to Specialist School with. He was a couple of years older than Randy and was married with a toddler and his wife was several months pregnant. Randy said, “Man, can you believe it? We’re gong to Hawaii!” His buddy looked down in his lap and started to weep.

A few miles off the coast on the DMZ there is an island named Con Son. Not long before, Con Son had been taken by the ARVN and Us Forces. After that successful assault Look Magazine had run an article about the “Tiger Cages” of Con Son where the NVA had kept and tortured POW’s. Not only was Con Son subject to shelling, due to the Radar and Electronic Intelligence Station the Coast Guard set up and manned there, it was a prime target for a all out commando assault.

When the transport landed Randy proceeded directly to the Base Personnel Officer and said, “I want to switch duty assignments with Fred Martin.”

“Why?” asked the Officer.

“Because, it’s the right thing for me to do,” Randy answered, “It’s what I’m here to do.”

After an interview with the Base Commander, Randy’s orders were changed and in 3 days he was on a Transport Flight to Vietnam.

Before Randy left he posted a letter to his betrothed, told her what he had done and that if he survived his 18 months on Con Son he would be back and they would be married. He also told her in the letter that he wanted her to take whatever time she needed to think about all this and that if she wanted “out” he understood and that he would be Okay with whatever she decided.

On the coast of California at Point Conception, high on the cliffs above the azure blue Pacific, sits a Coast Guard Lighthouse with a three story white Spanish stucco Lighthouse Keepers cottage and a small cemetary. It is one of the most breathtaking venues my eyes have ever seen…a truly magical place.

When Randy arrived back at the main Coast Guard command base the Base Commander summoned him to his office. Randy wasn’t sure what it was all about, other than the fact that he had served 18 months in a Combat Zone and had survived the shelling and several commando assaults and he was gonna get an “attaboy”…or, more probably, he was in deep shit for getting picked up by the Shore Patrol after his drinking spree during his layover in Honolulu on his trip home.

He walked into the Base Commanders office and the very same Officer that he had convinced to change his orders sending him to Con Son stood, saluted him, and handed Randy his Orders for the final 2 years of his Coast Guard service—Lighthouse Keeper at Point Conception, California.

Randy and his Bride, Alice, lived at Point Conception until his discharge. Today, they live in California in a very comfortable home that Randy self contracted and mostly built with his own hands. Alice recently retired from her position as an Elementary School Teacher and Randy is semi-retired from his successful Electrical Contracting business. They have a life filled with grandchildren

I apologize that this post is so long…I just couldn’t do “justice” to my friend in fewer words.

Face:)

Anyone who requires you to "convert" ain't worth the trouble. :p

Mark A. Baker

Well I was the beau of this girl previously and thought she was
worth quite some trouble. However I wasn't then looking for marriage.
So got may cake and eat it so's to speak.

So a while after our affair I had a party and invited them both,
thinking they'd get on well. They did!

He spent around 2 years fulfilling what is required to become Jewish.

Last I heard they emigrated to Israel. This was BTW a Yemeni Jew.

She was worth it. :)

He DEFINITELY thought it worth the trouble. :)

BTW, never realized that BB was supposed to be jewish. Who knew? :confused2:

I guess that "Max Fleischer" might have been a big clue. :coolwink:

Mark A. Baker

I'm not, but I qualify to join this excellent group who traditionally revere
scholarship. My mothers mother was Jewish.

Which "Max Fleischer" you referring to?

Note that despite alternative possibilities my religion is scientology.

Please don't analyze, its a Jewish thing. :)
