I just went into my Adobe Reader on my gadget here. Now you are being tood it is NEW and for 14.99 per month you can have a cloud and share like in google docs. But for 9.99 you get PDF creator or even a free app. You can later upload to sky drive or google drive and share so I don't get it. Those are free I think. I successfully attached a pdf file to a post here once. NowI forgot how. I once could delete all traces of the fact I made a duplicate post. I forgot how I did that too here. Chrissakes. Hats, I don't know what your personal scene is but when I was around 60, I had high blood pressure and was put on medications, about 5 pills a day. I had always had a razor sharp almost photographic type memory but starting up on those medical prescription drugs, I started to blank out. I remember that once I wanted to dial my cell phone to retrieve my messages and I just couldn't remember my own cell phone number, no matter how hard I tried.

To fight this, I started doing the daily crossword puzzles in a newspaper and also I bought some puzzle books to carry with me in the back seat of my car. Working crosswords actually began to restore my memory. Next, I discovered the Sudoku puzzles and finally the Cryptogram, Working that Cryptogram puzzle is a tremendously effective workout which seems to fight off mental sluggishness and build memory. My cousin up in Palo Alto also introduced me to Ken Ken, a numbers puzzle. Those are quite challenging as well. Too me, doing those puzzles is fun but it's not everyone's cup of tea. Anyway, well into my 70's now and for the most part, my memory has returned, not just to where it was but it is even better than ever.

Memory seems to subdivide into short term and long term. When you get older, the short term seems to start failing first. Where did I leave my keys, my cell phone, my wallet, my glasses, my sunglasses??? This can be going on in short term memory while the long term memory is still crystal sharp! Then there are these "senior moments" where the long term memory might fade. You know you saw a movie 20 years ago, you remember a few things about it but you can't remember its Title or the name of the leading Actor.

You start doing those puzzles, and they help tremendously in restoring a failing capacity to remember things. At least that has been my experience. Each puzzle seems to work a different part of the memory. It's like being in a gym, using different machines to strength different body parts. Same exact thing. Crosswords, Sudoku and Cryptogram, those 3 are a terrific memory work out. If you have the time, spend an hour a day on those 3 puzzles while you sip your morning coffee and your memory should come back to full strength.

Big new story today on Tony Ortega's Blog re DM paying large sums to a Private Investigator to have his father followed:

DM may have really damaged his public image by hiring a two man team to tail his father, paying them $10K a week for this job, even though Miscavige senior has not been saying anything bad about CoS nor attacking CoS in anyway. Ron Sr. did escape from CoS some time ago but has been muzzled and is not talking about it at all. Despite that, DM has paid to have him tailed ever since he left the church. A ton of bad publicity for CoS has been generated when the police stopped the PI's and found their vehicle loaded with firearms and ammunition, some of it not legal. To save their bacon, the PI's decided to squeal on CoS. The L.A. Times and other news sources have picked up on the story. As if the bad press from the Alex Gibney documentary wasn't bad enough, now it is just the first leg of a two legged attack on DM and CoS. This new second instance of major bad PR, combined with Gibney's documentary about CoS is a tremendous one-two punch of bad PR being leveled at CoS. The PR percussions are staggering.

Another item to be added to the old LRH issue, "What Your Fees Buy". How about $10,000 a week of those tax exempt fees being spent for PI's to tail DM's Father, even though his Father is keeping quite and not speaking out against the church? With all their other PR problems, now CoS has to deal with this!

I am not sure this will work but let me try to see if attachments attach properly. As a disclaimer, since I have been previously accused of grammar and other writing errors: the below that I am sharing are yet to be proofread works in progress, written by me, and unpublished to date on the subject of Plotinus. Therefore I would expect there will be corrections needed and citations missing in some cases. I am sharing these on Hats request as-is. Thank you for your understanding. Since it seems attachments work, I decided to just post it here in case anyone else is interested. The first link is probably the most developed of these papers. I've covered a number of topics in Plotinus within these papers: beauty, love, descent into bodies, the soul, and intellect. All of the papers rare in reference to Plotinus' Enneads.

Which one did you click? When I click them they open for me? Let me see if I have made them private or need to allow others to view them (via my profile settings).

My attachments for today appear as in progress, yet I am able to click and open each them from this thread. Not sure why Cat's cannot do so.

This is interesting. When my heart troubles started they put me onto a drug called Acupril, which I refused to take when it made me forgetful and mentally sluggish. So they changed it to Enalapril which gave the same result and response from me. Then a third one which did the same thing. So I've been on other things - they manage without those when they need to. Didn't stop me having a heart attack though.

Do you do cryptic crosswords? Those are the best - I do them daily. Hard sudokus take me an average of 10.5 minutes to do, which is embarrassing because a lady I know does them in less than 5.

Best things though - best best best: 1) play ping-pong. Speeds up your reaction time and gets your brain to observe, predict, anticipate and act all within a microsecond. It's a brilliant mind game.

2) Equally good is learning to juggle. This is harder when you are older but is still superb as a mental game. keeping track of 3 or more balls all in motion, predicting where each will land, etc etc. Brilliant stuff. Not that I can do it yet - I'm still chugging along trying to keep two balls in the air.

I'm looking for something to help me remember names. For some reason remembering people's names is totaaaly different to remembering other things. I don't get why.

Also - I am a sort of uncle-in-law by marriage to South Africa's memory champion - a guy called Kevin Horsley. (Google him) He had to memorise several thousand numbers of pi digits in their correct sequence. Then they'd give him a randomly chosen group of 5 of them in sequence and he had to answer with the 5 digits just before the ones given as well as the group of 5 just after. And he had to do this about 10 times.
How's that for a brainstrainer? He did it perfectly when he won the prize.

It doesn't rub off on me though.

My memory problems get worse with the taking of any pharmaceuticals. My thyroid meds are a different strength each time. With a freshly printed pill off the assembly line, I am almost turned psychic by the active ingedients. If I get a brand name bottle of Synthroid that was produced a year ago and imported (90 pills)....my brain is sluggish and I can't even have a bm without a pot of coffee, forget the a sudoku. If I get generic levothyroxin the pills stay active for about 30 days but miss 30% of expected potency afterwards. They are also 25% less potent than the brand name from stage One. There is no sense getting 90 generic .....cause they're just about inert after 45 days from the careless way tgey're generally exposed to light and the air.

Folks should never let an edocrinologist carve away on their gland if there is another solution. Most do good with T3 and T4 from a compound pharmacy or Armour thyroid as substitutes. Too bad we cannot trust companies to keep things fresh. I actually laugh as I sometimes compare myself to Robert De Niro in the film Awakenings. That's how bad a BAD bottle of 90 pills can leave a person feeling. :grouch:

Maria, your downloads came through. I notice the few I opened were only 3 pages each. They would not lend themselves to opening without downloading first but I think that's the nature of PDF files.

Do you know where the truest unedited version of the Enneads can be found in print?

I have to go babysit for a weiner dog and a Hungarian Puli ( a mut) tonite in some lonely dark house. I will be reading Maria Cuervo.

Very interesting post, Hats. Sorry to hear that you had a heart attack, do you have things under control now as regards your heart?

I have never even heard of cryptic crossword puzzles, let alone done them. The Cryptogram is my favorite memory improving device right now. For a long while I was unable to solve about one in ten Crytograms but I am getting much better now, In a month of puzzles I an mow unable to solve only one or two a month, 1 in 15 or 1 in 30. It is really helping me see patterns much better.

I see a 4 letter word where the first and last letters are the same and it is almost always ThaT. That gives me 3 letters in one glance. I see a four letter word with the first and third letters the same and almost always, it is EvEr. If it is a 5 letter word, it is EvEry. Sometimes you will see that same 5 letter beginning with an ending on it of 3 or 4 letters. That has to be everyone or everybody. Once you get a word with that many letters, the puzzle solution quickly falls out.

On the ending, where the authors name is mentioned, I always check into that near the beginning. Lots of times it will be SOURCE UNKNOWN or CHINESE PROVERB. If there is a long name with a middle name, usually you get Robert Louis Stevenson or Edgar Alan Poe or Henry David Thoreau or Ralph Waldo Emerson, etc. If you get the author's name early, the puzzle, usually falls within two to five minutes.

On the Suddokus, in my paper Monday's puzzle is easy and then they get harder as the week wears on. In Monday, they take me 9 to 12 minutes, Tuesday and Wednes, maybe 10 to 15 minutes. Thursday Friday and Saturday get really tough, maybe taking an hour or more or Friday and Saturday. It sounds like you are faster than me and your friend is off the charts!

I like your comments on ping pong, I see where that would really help. I used to be an excellent player but havn't played in several years. I am also poor at remembering names. Thanks for all your tips!

thanks :) hope it is enjoyable. At least one is 5 or 6 pages long. Armstrong is the most complete and easiest to read but MacKenna did an excellent and poetic translation....His is widely read. Armstrong's translation is 7 volumes. Here is a start on Armstrong's interpretation of Plotinus. https://archive.org/details/plotinus032932mbp

I would want to have both translations available for side to side comparison of passages, both MacKenna and Armstrong.

Nah. If you're not doing cryptic crosswords then you're still in junior league. Here are a few from the paper to show you how they work:

1. Egalitarian, like a teacher not teaching. Answer: classless (get it? Egalitarian has everyone equal and so they are classless, ditto a teacher without a class is not teaching.)

OK an easy one:

2. A bit of a rotter, a scallywag, a knave. ( "A bit of" is your clue. rotter, a scallywag, = rascal)

Easy peasy.


It takes a different method of thinking - one that Mbird hates. Associative thinking, not his favoured "logic".
