Hi Maria, you said you'd like to see my paintings. I used to have 2 on
my website which got "Frozen". I believe I can get that reversed, and if I can
I'll post on this thread.

Great Terril. I look forward to that. :coolwink: Glad there are a few of us artists 'round here.

Just adding a bit of musical accompaniment to the festivities here on the Apollo. I just happen to enjoy British pop of the 90s. Like Echo and the bunnymen and Oasis. No one listening to this song over and over again and liking it could ever be a psychopath.

I guess no one bit on the brit pop. Here is a bit of the psychology, for me. I was raised very strict. VERY is the key word. So I never got to be a hippy. But I am /was one anyway. So in my mid-30s I found British and American Alternative and added this to all the music of the 60s I like (lots of music). And added over the years lots of other music, classical, country, mood, not just 60s or 90s. So here I am. I remained a teenager. I love it. It simplifies decisions to care only for music + art + love and friends. There is no compromise. Anything that is not beauty and love is not for me. PERIOD.

Everything else is just extra rules to ruin everything and GET IN THE WAY of FUN and the BEAUTY and simple wonderfulness of reality. Scn is not beautiful, loving or fun. So it's out. I don't need to know what it 'believes'. I already know it lacks nobility and heart. It's guitar is out of TUNE.

I pretty much dislike comformity......

in any form.

And even when I feel I am dogmatic (oh I probably am, just as are most of us human ants on this hot rock!) I feel dodgy with myself about it....and I know I am not sure and I try to sort it out...and usually the way to sort it is just to drink a bit of wine and listen to music. LOL.

Postponing is ok. Being finite and sort of dumb waiting is better than sticking my foot in mud.....

So here is a one shot wonder from the 90s.

It sounds a bit 50s to me.....

For those of us who can also appreciate a Julian Bream Adagio...

There is a cd of Bream Adagios. I have it. So far I wonder why no one bites on that either. Is Bream NOT ok?
Are adagios boring??

LOL. Maybe music is just not of interest to some people. I love all kinds of music.

Bream? Bites? Sounds a bit fishy to me. I hear he's very good with scales...

Edit: But seriously, JB was a contemporary of Segovia unfortunately for him, and old Andy was a tough act to follow.

You want adagios see Bruckner.

There is his magnificent completion of symphony 9. Not an adagio, but he never hurrys.

Wagner said only Beethoven can stand next to Bruckner. Currently I consider
no one can stand next to this completion.

Try listening to later Bream and John Williams, both underappreciated in the days when Segovia was still around. Their more mature work is free of the frantic need to compete with the old man. I also used to be fond of Narciso Yepes another younger guitarist of the sixties and seventies.

Oh my lord ! ! ! !

Way back in 1965 I was working in Swaziland of all places and I was invited to dinner one evening by a friend.

First he served up some soup music by Franz von Suppe.

Next was the fish course and there was a choice of Julian Bream or the Trout quintet.

Then the main course of mutton, which is to say "Sheep may safely graze" by Bach or Handel or someone.

And so it went on. We had music for the entire dinner. Most enjoyable.

Some food was served later too!

Hi everyone, I am back on line. My computer was diagnosed. Two small fans which cool the computer's power supply burned out and stopped functioning so the power supply tended to overheat and was ruined. When it got to a certain temperature, it would automatically shut down the computer so that no serious damage would occur to the rest of the computer. My technician also heard some strange noises in my hard drive and said that soon my hard drive would fail. This computer was put together by my son and given to me when he bought a newer unit, about 2 1/2 years ago. My technician gave me an incredible deal on an HP computer which he rebuilt to be better than new. He sold it too me for only $125 plus $25 to come over & install it. It comes with Microsoft Word and other software apps worth about $200 and of course he transferred all the data from my hard drive onto the new computer.

Maria, your post is quite strong and assertive. IMO, it is a great summary of where you stand as regards what life is all about. I think it is one of your finest posts!! Here's to music + art + love and friends, not necessarily in that order but in any order as long as all 4 are present. If those 4 items are in a person's life, that person will have FUN and Experience BEAUTY. Having FUN may be the the basic principle of life. The word Survival doesn't fill the bill for why there is life. Unless life is having FUN, why bother being alive? I share with you your views above. On the surface your post first appears to be a bit simplistic, but as one ponders it, the post actually grows in stature, at least for me, and becomes more all encompassing.

Very nice piece of work Maria, thank you for sharing it with us!

How about a little appetizer dish, "Christ on the Mount of Olives", I do believe that was an oratorio written by Handel. I am only referring to eating the olives of course. I mean no disrespect to Christ. Whoops, I check it out and Beethoven wrote the Oratorio.

Thank you Lakey. I wondered if the post seemed superficial or selfish...but as I was writing it I realized that is not the case at all. Survival nowhere near comes up to the level of those four things combined.

Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

I was reading some philosophical stuff by a philosopher named Schelling (he's good). And I came across this passage. I will paste it in and then comment in relation to Scn. Just for fun! It comes from Schelling's lectures in the 1700s on philosophy and mythology.

"Because the gods are ethical beings, and in each of them some sort of spiritual character trait or trait of temperament is in evidence to the exclusion of another, thereby giving them a status above that of human life, they can be employed as symbols of ethical concepts, as has occurred since time immemorial. Use is made of what already is there, but the use does not explain the emergence into being. The poet, when he has need of a deity that demands moderation and self-control, will call upon the contemplative Athena rather than the wrathfully disposed Hera."

How I read what Schelling is saying about archaic Greek beliefs is that gods themselves were not immutable or universalizable, but that each were thought to have some character trait and not others....they were unique sorts of beings and their ethical natures could not be universalized into one 'definition'. Such that depending on the trait a situation needed, a different god had to be called upon. Scn wants to universalize the OT or the being who is attempting OT. As if what is gained were all-encompassing. Because it cannot stand the uniqueness of powers, that one being might have a power that some other person in CoS lacks. Everything must be equitable. Tell that to lightning or the mountain or the desert. They surely are unique and one does not rule the other. That desire for universal being and a universal ethical being, alone, as a goal, would give anyone even a Uri Geller, an aneurism. Because Uri had some 'gifts' but not others. He was not an OT that fit that OT definition passed around by CoS. Scn fails to see that universals fail because life itself is utterly unique and cannot be made to fit 'definitions'. It's not cookie cutter. This means it remains mysterious and unclear and less than something that can easily be nailed down. For Schelling, the appearance of such beings did not however mean that being itself was in play - the full and unadulterated sort of being that is free of uniqueness and that exists outside of space and enjoys all 'powers' - since being of that absolute form would signal the capacity of to create existence/everything and this would violate the law of conservation/cause paradoxes. Being by itself, free and absolute, is something we never see so to discuss it as if it exists independently is a fool's errand. Such beings as the gods were for Schelling part of nature, having traits, specific qualities. These qualities could not be generalized. Just as horses are not hamster-like - so if you need hamster qualities you don't buckle up the stallion. Often it seems that things like ethics and truth are generalized, as if they were floating somewhere free of the universe.....I like what Schelling discusses since it means that ethical cannot be defined by way of universal one-sized things that fit everyone the same way.

You are very welcome, Maria. You know, at CCLA in the early 70's, Yvonne Jentszch was promoting having fun. There were two sayings frequently repeated over and over at staff meetings. First was, "Seriousness equals mass". The second one was "If it isn't fun, it isn't Scientology." The strange thing was that there was general agreement among the Execs and the Staff on both of those sayings. There was a team spirit there, a real Espirit de Corps.

I was talking to Purple Haze the other day and she suggested that the reason so many of us liked being on staff and stuck around despite the long hours and the low pay was because we liked our fellow staff members. Perhaps it was the people and not the claims made for the tech which kept us there in the first few years.

Another thing which existed in CoS in the early days was Hubbard's stated "Senior Policy" which was, "We deliver what we promise." That policy was emphasized strongly in the 70's. All three of those mantras were in place when it was fun to be on staff and have the staff members as your best friends. Those things are no longer present in today's CoS. If someone is having fun while in the S.O., two things are now asserted, either the person is a "joker/degrader" or the person is "PTS to the middle class".

Don't get me wrong, the early 70's were not all peaches and cream. The seeds of destruction and destroyed lives had already been planted by LRH and every once in awhile those seeds were manifested in the orgs. Just read Hubbard's KSW #1 bulletin, the first item in every course pack. Hubbard said, "Scientology is a deadly serious activity and the fate of every man, woman and child on this planet depends on what we do here and now in Scientology." Hubbard said on the one hand that seriousness equaled mass and then on the other hand enjoins every Scientologist to treat Scientology as a deadly serious activity. Connect the dots and he was demanding that every Scientologist, both staff and public, had to be deadly serious and thus very massy. Being that way totally precludes any Scientologist from having any fun. Even so, compared to today's CoS, the earlier days in CoS were much more fun by far than what current staff and public are experiencing.

It seems as if this trait of the gods is also in play among we mere mortals who rank below them in status. We have our our great composers, painters, writers, poets, actors, dancers, etc. We have had our great leaders, politicians, educators, business tycoons. We have great artisans, tradesman , men and women of science, mathematics, sports, philosophers, etc. Most of these worthy individuals have some sort of spiritual or intellectual trait or temperament which is in evidence to the exclusion of another.

Please see my comments in red concerning your first paragraph. In your second paragraph, extending the concept of the first paragraph as it relates to humans, it seems as if talents and deficiencies are doled out to humans either on a random mathematical basis or by a Deity who metes out talents or holds back talents as he/she sees fit. No one person seems to have all favorable traits nor no favorable traits.

I agree with you about the concept that by eliminating all the hang ups and negative forces attached to or bearing down upon any particular person, that will not automatically result in that person attaining super human powers in all facets of life. Hubbard seems to have taken a quantum leap of faith in his logic to come up with the the concept that every man or woman alive, except for those whose brains and/or bodies had suffered actual physical damage, had almost unlimited potential to excel at a superhuman level, called OT by Hubbard.

In Dianetics, Hubbard was somewhat tethered or muzzled in his claims for Clear. He stressed things such as never being sick again, the attainment of a perfect memory, 20-20 vision, higher intelligence, quicker reflexes, a longer life, maybe the ability to regrow a lost tooth, etc. In other words, these claims in Dianetics were bold but they were believable by the society of the 1950's. By contrast, the claims for OT were beyond the belief of almost anyone except possible a handful of people.

Llok at a large sample size of Earth people and subject them to testing and for each ability tested you will get a bell shaped curve with a mean and a standard deviation. By taking such people and running then on advanced Scientology processing, LRH was saying that EVERONE OF THEM would end up being off the charts on the positive side for every single ability being tested for. The Bell shaped curve would be shifted into a thin bar type graph with all people being off the top of the chart at the extreme right edge of the graph.

Hubbard was essentially making this claim, though he did not say it in the same words I just used. He said it by stating that all OT8's would be at total cause over matter, energy, space and time, both subjectively and objectively. This is what Hubbard stated in one of his earlier definitions for OT abilities. In other words, he was making the ordinary man off the street into a more advanced being than any god or goddess in Greek mythology!!

Hubbard had no grounds whatsoever to make this claim but he made it anyway. Many of us here on ESMB fell for it and took the bait. Looking at this state of affairs from my current vantage point, I had enough knowledge and intelligence back in 1970 to see that Hubbard was making unsubstantiated claims with absolutely no evidence and very weak theory and testing to back up his claims. I took the bait and fell for it, I am really ashamed of that fact. I wanted it to be true when I first heard it and a lot of bright young people mixed with some older and wizened people were in the Orgs mixing with we new people and telling us how lucky we wee to start up the bridge at that time since most of the bugs which they had to go through had now been removed. It was really greed, hoping that I too would soon have super powers and be a sort of God which made me throw good judgement to the wind. I completely bought into this fantasy. It was a big time failing on my part.

The path that was supposed to take we normal Earth people to this hallowed promised land where we would be Godlike was simply auditing away, removing negative forces from our space. If one looks at this thoroughly, he will see that Hubbard was claiming that there was a slumbering God in each of us which was simply covered up my various negative beings and energies occupying our spaces. Now this just does not make any sense. It is not even a theory, it is not even an opinion, there is no testing of any kind to back up LRH's claims. Why would a God like creature emerge once all the brick a brack around each of our spaces was sufficiently cleaned up?

I can't stop laughing at that image of the slumbering god covered up with brick a brack. It really is embarrassing to be so ignorant that I believed it.
