Wish I'd been there, Carm-especially Jimi, and Miles Davis. While I never knew Miles, we had some friends in common, and I've got some great stories from them about him.
The only one from that list I've seen live was Arlo Guthrie. Mostly on the east coast, I've seen Edgar Winters, (I met his brother the great Johnny Winter at CCNY), Allman Bros, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Jeff Beck, Leon Russell (3 times), Yes, David Sanborn, Orleans, Brecker Bothers, Gentle Giant, Ten Years After, Al Jarreau, Sonny Rollins, and Pete Seeger, among others.
OK, quiz time: There have been 3 musicians who, between the 1940's and the 1980's, all shared these qualities:
(1) They virtually revolutionized the concept of how their instruments were played, and influenced everyone who followed, and were widely considered to be the best ever at their respective instruments
(2) They all died young, under substance-abuse related conditions
(3) They all had Cherokee bloodlines
You've got 30 minutes to hand in your papers
Best, Dex
I'll have a go on one of them: Charlie Christian.
Great early jazz guitar, influenced many later greats, tho' not sure about the Cherokee thing...
