'Anonymous' Anti-Scientologists Subject of U.C. Academic Paper
By Lauren Smiley, Thursday, Apr. 8 2010 @ 8:30AMComments (22)
Categories: Education, internets

At the Pacific Sociological Association conference in Oakland today, a gaggle of academics from the U.C. Irvine will be presenting their research on the Anonymous protesters of the Church of Scientology, the movement we covered in a 2008 cover story. The paper is titled "Project Chanology, Scientology & Memes: Shifting Notions of Movement Frames & Protest Strategy in the Age of Internet Culture." A pretty lofty title for a bunch of self-professed computer nerds wearing funny masks. We caught up with one of the co-authors, sociology graduate student B. Remy Cross, to get a preview.

Why would an academic want to study internet geeks in Guy Fawkes masks?

"This was interesting to us from an academic perspective because social movement scholars say you need some important things to make a movement successful: resources, a physical location, people you can depend on, money. This was a movement that didn't seem to have any of these things.

Many online movements try to take it from online to offline and usually they fail. That's what we were expecting. [On the way to the first international Anonymous protest day in February 2008 in Las Vegas] we were joking it would be a success if there were 15 people. We get there and drive past the church and there's hundreds of people there."
What was that first protest like?

"A lot of people had never been to a protest before, and shutting down Scientology wasn't the primary reason for being there. It was to have fun and create some havoc, and take 4chan [Anonymous' message board] into the offline world. There was a lot of signs using memes, and a lot of rick-rolling, and people were generally having fun."

James Harrison
Anonymous protesters in London

A fun protest? Aren't demonstrators supposed to be angry?

"I think, a lot of the time, mainstream media tends to ignore protests that use elements of fun or frivolity, but there's a long tradition, especially on the left, of protests that do this. It's a good way to get people involved. No one wants to stand in the sun with a placard for four hours and chant the same damn slogan. This isn't their parents' protest. It's not about and singing songs; it's about playing the Rick Roll. And if people don't understand that, it's not their problem to explain this to the people of Scientology."
But if Scientology has no idea what the hell they're doing, is the protest effective?
"It depends on what you mean by effective. [Anonymous] really wanted to hurt the church, in that way they've been successful. The church doesn't say much but from what they've been doing, they find this highly irritating. The initial protesters [who called in hundreds of pizza orders to the orgs and overloaded the church's Web server and fax machines] wanted to just be annoying, that satisfaction of having trolled somebody in real life. The church got trolled hard."

So it's the hip internet kids versus the square Scientologists?
"It's a pre-Internet organization going up against a post-internet organization and failing badly because of not understanding how online info spreads. Everything [the church] did to try to smear Anonymous was thrown back at them to make them look stupid.

If Anonymous was to have politics, it would be a libertarian strain of 'Everything should be free, open, no secrets, no restrictions, no one telling us what to do.' The church is the other extreme: 'We control everything, you come to us because you want to be told what to do, and we're going to keep you safe and secure and protected, and in exchange you're going to pay us for this service.' ... Now you can't stop the spread of info the way you used to."

How has the movement changed?

"As the focus of the protest shifted and hooked up with these [more mainstream Scientology protesters], the people in it for the fun peeled off. It's now a smaller but more concentrated movement with a more intense sense of focus. By and large it's kind of gone into a -- I don't want to say more predictable -- but now they're trying to be more of a conventional movement."

So will Anonymous' protest of Scientology die out?

"You just have to look at 4chan; there's an attention span issue here, too. Nothing sticks around for too, too long. It's possible they'll come back in the future. But for now, its been boiled down to the more hardcore people who found something in this that appealed to them or were already interested in this."

I guess you didn't get the Hubbard Communication Office Hidden Data Bulliten re: "Past Lives".

I misplaced my copy...I think it was "neverememio", Black on Black

The gist of it was that the only past lives that are true and valid are El Ron's hisself. However, PC's and Pre OT's that wish to continue revivifing their false or unacceptable past lives should be encouraged to continue to do so via the re-sign line.

That was funny!

Gawd Carmelo, where do you come up with all this stuff!

I have one “Friend” right now, Carmelo—and that is due to a unique set of circumstances that are between us.

It's a past life thing. Just like there was more than one person recalling being Napoleon, A face and I have the same track.

In a previous life, we both recall being the same person, Darrin Stephens, an ad executive with McMann and Tate on Madison Ave. in NYC.

I remember driving a Chevrolet Impala.

A face remembers coming home and being handed a martini.

It was a good life in the suburbs, probably Connecticut.

We both remember being married to Samantha Stephens, a good looking blonde.

Her mother, a real witch, called us "Durwood."

There had to be some dub in because there were images of Ben Franklin and other historical characters not from the 20th century.

It couldn't be possible though, who'd believe there were two Darrins?

I would - well - perhaps not two exactly the same - but I've certainly a) er - to use the Scn term, "blown" stuff that was really as much me as I am - as if we'd been leading a quite intimately dual existence and b) picked up on the past of other people entirely - except that it doesn't seem like someone else - in some sense the other *is* you too.

A scio would wave the time track of theta lecture at you - I don't especially buy any particular explanation - it just is as far as I am concerned.

OK Facey, I understand.

Lakey,

Over the last few months I’ve read all your posts re: Yvonne. You’ve given her thoughtful, respectful and well written “props”. Your detailed recording here for all that have come—and will come—of personal, first hand insight of Yvonne and CCLA of that era is very valuable and a unique perspective.

My comments re: Yvonne were just that…my comments re: Yvonne.

I wish I could tell everyone out there “who I am” but I’ve already posted on another thread that I’ve got people still “in” that really I care about and I’m “holding my cards” close to my chest, for the time being. You may or may not have heard of me…I will tell you that I’ve never met you, Lakey.

I’m “groovin’ up slowly” on ESMB. I actually never thought I’d ever post here but the “Power of Source” “POS” thread just finally got to me…I knew information that would help folks understand why those guys in the “Stars” gotta bum rap and I finally said something. All of you “keep drawing me back in.”:wink2:

My posts are—to my own disappointment—judiciously edited.

I’ve received some “Friends” requests over the last 24 or so and—after a lot of thought and self-debate—decided that for now I should not accept any “Friends” requests. I know this all sounds rude—it certainly would appear that way to me—but, please let me explain:

I did not come to ESMB with the intention of getting involved. Besides my aforementioned reason for anonymity my life, as it is, does not allow me to spend a lot of time each week on this board. I would prefer what time I do have to be spent following threads of interest and post whenever something that I might be helpful with, or just can't resist—within boundaries I’ve set for myself—comes up.

I have one “Friend” right now, Carmelo—and that is due to a unique set of circumstances that are between us.

I hope you all understand. I consider all here my friend and I hope to be a friend to all of you. All of you have made me feel very welcome. However, for the time being, I wish to remain,

OK "Facey", thanks for giving us your background so we know where you stand. Notice, I never made a friend request to you, I figured no need to formally request that which already is, namely we are friends. I am sure this applies to many others on ESMB as well.

I am really pleased that you read all my blurbs about Yvonne. Thanks for acking me for my unique perspective on the extremely interesting period of the early days of CCLA. I was there, I have a photographic memory, so to speak, which so many detractors on ESMB say nobody has, I have writing skills and enjoy writing and honing my skills and I was a "little guy" at CCLA, a "rank and file" staff member. I lived that three and half year period, recording every minute of it in my analytical memory banks and when I arrived on ESMB, I JUST NEEDED TO DEBRIEf! I saw that there was a demand for this data when I started posting it, the topic had "legs" and people were responding and wanted more. Your remarks served as a "coup de grace" or icing on the cake for all my efforts in writing up these recollections.

All this interesting data about Yvonne, CCLA and all the wonderful people whom I met along the way are now permanent PUBLIC RECORD. A lot of non Scientology scholars have read this thread and communicated to me how helpful it has been to them in understanding why people remain loyal to LRH and C of S even after they have been severly hurt and damaged by those two entities. When I look at it now, I think that I am uniquely qualified to have been the one to have told this story. Having the memory, the writing skills, good critical thinking skills and the love of writing I may be the only former CCLA staff who will ever undertake the task of making all this type of information know.

I talked to Hector, the chief CCLA registrar for many years, and he remembers huge amounts of data, as I do, including much that I do not know but he told he that he is a terrible writer and can not put his thoughts down in writing. I offered to work with him and do it for him and he agreed in principle but said that he was too busy right now to make the time. Hopefully, this will come to pass later. This entire large thread originating from an obscure and lowly Director of Disbursements at CCLA 40 years ago...the thought that this all came to pass is kind of mind boggling for me.

Not to offend anyone here, but I always thought that Samantha was quite a witch.

We are all connected.

Yes, there is truth in that. Sometimes the only way a PC can fully erase an incident is by also running it from the perspective/viewpoint of the other players involved.

The issue of who is who and who really are you, etc., is open to all kinds of speculation and to unfortunately incomplete answers.

The resolution appears to be to simply address, deal with and run off the charge from whatever viewpoint needs to be addressed to get free from the unwanted conditions you feel you need to address.

"Ultimate" truth is wee way off yet:yes:

It's "hear hear" and not "here here".

It is a term that originated hundreds of years ago - when a person giving a speech was really talking good sense others would then say out loudly "Hear him! Hear him!".

This was then abbreviated to "hear hear".

I saw such tragic waste and mis-utilization of talent and skills in my SO career. It was one of the conundrums that resulted in my walking away...it just didn't make any sense.:confused2:

Unfortunatelly, what memory I have is photogenic.:)
