that ^^^ reminds me of Ian and Sylvia, Four Strong Winds

Wait a minute! Ian & Sylvia! I have all of their records. Yes, all. Yes, records.

The duo split many years ago yet both remain major stars in Canada.

I highly recommend Ian Tyson's album of a few years ago, "Live at Longview." There is not a throwaway song on it; everything about it is fantastic. Recorded live.

Here Tyson explains that Bob Dylan gives inspiration to "Four Strong Winds."

Titanic sunk by steering mistake, author says

Reuters –
– Wed Sep 22, 11:50 am ET
LONDON (Reuters) – The Titanic hit an iceberg in 1912 because of a basic steering error, and only sank as fast as it did because an official persuaded the captain to continue sailing, an author said in an interview published on Wednesday.

Louise Patten, a writer and granddaughter of Titanic second officer Charles Lightoller, said the truth about what happened nearly 100 years ago had been hidden for fear of tarnishing the reputation of her grandfather, who later became a war hero.

Lightoller, the most senior officer to have survived the disaster, covered up the error in two inquiries on both sides of the Atlantic because he was worried it would bankrupt the ill-fated liner's owners and put his colleagues out of a job.

"They could easily have avoided the iceberg if it wasn't for the blunder," Patten told the Daily Telegraph.

"Instead of steering Titanic safely round to the left of the iceberg, once it had been spotted dead ahead, the steersman, Robert Hitchins, had panicked and turned it the wrong way."

Patten, who made the revelations to coincide with the publication of her new novel "Good as Gold" into which her account of events are woven, said that the conversion from sail ships to steam meant there were two different steering systems.

Crucially, one system meant turning the wheel one way and the other in completely the opposite direction.

Once the mistake had been made, Patten added, "they only had four minutes to change course and by the time (first officer William) Murdoch spotted Hitchins' mistake and then tried to rectify it, it was too late."

Patten's grandfather was not on watch at the time of the collision, but he was present at a final meeting of the ship's officers before the Titanic went down.
There he heard not only about the fatal mistake but also the fact that J. Bruce Ismay, chairman of Titanic's owner the White Star Line persuaded the captain to continue sailing, sinking the ship hours faster than would otherwise have happened.

"If Titanic had stood still, she would have survived at least until the rescue ship came and no one need have died," Patten said.

The RMS Titanic was the world's biggest passenger liner when it left Southampton, England, for New York on its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912. Four days into the trip, the ship hit an iceberg and sank, taking more than 1,500 passengers with it.

****************************

Alan Walter recalled being on the Titanic, and losing his life. He claimed to be 42 year old John Jacob Astor who was travelling with his 18 year old second-wife Madelene.

I am reminded of the adage know as Murphy's Law which is that "If something can go wrong, it will go wrong."

On the TItanic, we had a Murphy's law to the nth power. So many small things which had only a slight chance of occuring all occurred. Its something like one making a parlay on the routlette wheel by betting just a single number say with a 36 to one chance against winning. What it took was equivalent to a person walking up to a roulette wheel, placing a random number six times in row, and wining all six of his bets. The odds of this happening randomly are 1 in 36 x 36 x 36 x36 x36 x36 or about 1 in 2.2 billion but it happened. Lets say the odds of each thing happening were twice as good, say one chance in 18 and six things had to go wrong for the Titanic to sink, that would yield one chance in 34 million. If each thing had a 1 in 6 chance of occuring then the chance of all 6 occuring were a more realistic 1 in 46,650. Intuitively, that seems more likely to be the correct order of magnitude but who knows.

Say the ship had only 1 chance in 46,650 of sinking due to random chance. Certain decisions had to be made and the wrong decision had to be made every time. For a 46,650 shot to come in, it is very unlikely to say the least and you would think that somebody intended it to happen and that somebody or group of somebodies had to be very stong spiritually to bring the desired event to fruition.

No one has ever advanced a theory that anyone had anything to gain from the tragedy. Perhaps a competing cruise line hoped for the Titanic to sink or someone did not like John Jacob Astor and wished that he be removed.

Now that might be the way it came about. Say Astor had enemies and a couple wanted him out of the way for business reasons and they simply intended that he was to have an accident and die. You know the old saying that you must be careful what you postulate or intend and be specific about it. Maybe the intention that got through was simply that Astor die in an accident. It was a shot gun type of postulate, with no qualifications and it came true. Whoever made the postulate could have just as well intended that only Astor would die in the accident and no one else would be hurt but they did not intend that specifically but intended his death very broadly.

Its just a guess by me, a stab in the dark as to the cause of the Titanic going down. Let's see how Astor's space looks compared to Alan's Space.

Imagine the pc, me, you, whomever. The pc has run the gauntlet of the routing form. Luckily, it hasn't taken more than a day to complete. The person signing it off is easy on you only because they are busy with something else more pressing. At nearly every step of the way this pc has to confront the incomprehensible situation of staff not really wanting them there, not unless there's money changing hands or a completion to record. Otherwise, looking at your smiling face is just Dev-T.

But these days you get a DofP interview followed with a sales pitch to buy the basic books package. Your visit to the E/O provides another opportunity to buy the basic books. You see the IAS reg, WISE rep, I-Help rep, Super Power building reg, Ideal Org reg, SO recruiter and so on. Each push the basic book package plus the vested interest of their post title.

Finally the pc makes it into session.

Back in the day where I audited, the routing was simple: Registrar to DofP, DofP interviews then sends pc to DTS for scheduling, auditor meets and greets, then delivers the goods. The organizational gauntlet was minimal. The gauntlet the pc needed to run, and dissolve, was the life gauntlet.

This is the auditor theme song, from Sweeney Todd: It could also be the family theme song:

Anyway, just imagine that you have run the gauntlet then you are greeted by a person with this attitude:

This is really a cute feel good song!

She's so pretty and sings so well BUT, the pretty girl that was under the ton of make up, false eyelashes, and hair swoop de doop -- oy vey. eeeek

Dean always looked and sounded great.

I had forgot all about this song but it is really good. Dean is the consumate master of being suave. He sure lived his life with an artistic flair. Oy vey, I did not know that Nancy had so many problems. Maybe she needed to find a nice Jewish boy or better yet, A nice Italian boy to straighten her out. Well at least she got the family genes for being a fine singer.

The Dalai Lama Says...

Dalai Lama: "To be kind, honest and have positive thoughts; to forgive those who harm us and treat everyone as a friend; to help those who are suffering and never to consider ourselves superior to anyone else: even if this advice seems rather simplistic, make the effort of seeing whether by following it you can find greater happiness."

A few years back I held Sunday Brunches once a month for anyone who wanted to get together to talk Scientology. It made no difference to me the degree of their upset, if they wanted to talk in glowing praise, or if they wanted to run it down. I can go any way at all with this being able to parse what I consider to be the wheat from chaff of Scientology.

I was cautioned that some of the people who show up could well be OSA. My attitude was and is, "So?" because these people could use some good auditing, too. I know auditing is a good thing and should be continued with anyone reaching. That is one of my safepoints.

Many years ago I had an old boss who used to say, "Your only friends are your wife and God. Everyone else is an acquaintance on a scale from 1 to 10."

So this is where I differ with the Dalai Lama. Treating everyone as a friend is a good, short-term strategy. It can even help get your ass out of a jam, say, when someone wants to kick your ass for no apparent good reason.

On the long-term, treating everyone as a friend can be dangerous because some "friends" will attempt to find your soft spot then massage it for all you are worth. Here, think manipulation. Think sales-hungry salesperson. Think scientology registrar. Not everyone has your best interests at heart.

Nice comment Ted! The first time I ran into this horror zone was my last trip to Flag in February of 1999. On my previous trip in 1992, this bullshit was not in place yet. My thoughts were as follows:

1. Don't they know that I scraped up the last dime I have to get the $20K together to come here and get my case handled?
2. Instead of paying all this money on Wise and various Building Projects and Narconon, shouldn't I use my funds to get my training and processing and move to the top of the Bridge? After all, that is the reason I was sold for becomming involved in the first place.

You would tell this to the reg and they would want to see your credit cards. They would take your card into a back room and come out and announce proudly that they raised your credit limit by $3,000. You would thank them and then they would reg you for the $3,000 so you could apply it to the Super Power Building. After a lengthy and stressful battle, you outlast the reg and refuse to pay the $3,000. Finally you are routed through to the D of P. Whatever happens, happens. For me, I was not allowed to get in session because I was taking prescription drugs. I flew back home and felt secure that at least I had $3,000 more on my credit card so I was not fully broke yet.

SURPRISE - When my credit card bill came, there was a $3,000 charge to the Flag Service Org. I called the bank and contested the charge and got it reversed. The next Friday, a day after the Thursday at 2:00 PM cut off, I got a call from the FBO at Flag. I was threatened with expulsion if I did not "repay" the Org the $3,000 I cheated them out of. I was very firm and told the FBO that I never approved this charge, was never consulted and never signed anything. He demanded I send him a full report which I did by certified mail and I never heard from him again.

I decided right there on the spot that I would never go to Flag again and put myself into such a vulnerable situation where I was at their mercy.

HUBBARD GREEN ON WHITE IN ACTION - SCREW YOUR MOST LOYAL AND ABLE MEMBERS OUT OF EVERY DIME THEY CAN BORROW BEFORE THURSDAY AT 2:00 PM. GET THE STAT UP FOR THAT ONE WEEK, don't do any future planning just make it go right and worry about each week as it comes up. If your stat goes down even one week, you are downstat and lose your day off.

These policies just reek! It is all total bullshit!! It leads to the resignation of the most able and ethical members and an ARC broken field. Those members who remian are usually good natured and kind hearted but they are for the most part simply robots, going through various motions without realizing what they are doing.

You can see the End Product of these type of policies by driving by the Orange County Org as I do often. The building needs paint, the roof needs repair, the shubbery is overgrown with weeds, the lawn is never mowed or edged and the parking lot is virutally empty. More cars belong to the staff than to the people on course or in session.

Nightly, there is a flood of phone calls, all of which I screen and do not answer. They are soliciting funds for the design and furnishing phase of their Ideal Org. They acquired an Ideal Org in 2004 with a $6.5 million funding drivel. I only gave $270, $20 at a Christmas dinner when they kicked off the program and $250 when a couple of reges drove to my house in 2004. Those were the last funds I ever donated to C of S.

Their latest promo states proudly and boldly that "We are Going Ideal in January of 2011!" Whoop de doo! I wish them the best but count me out!

Welcome back EP…nice fish…to bad you couldn’t bring home a stringer…I love pan fried freshwater fish.

Back in the ‘80’s when Willie made it big he asked in an interview how it felt to be an overnight success. “I have no idea,” Willie answered “I spent 20 years on the road doin’ it.”

The interviewer went on to ask why he still had all his country Texan friends as his entourage, handlers and managers when he could afford top professionals from LA. “The weren't there when we was sleepin’ in cars,” answered Willie.

I remember, back in 1968, playing Four Strong Winds for my girl friend (who had lived a more conventional top 40 musical experience). I had never heard that Dylan story. Back earlier in junior high, I used to listen to an FM station that played folk for a few hours each night. That's where I first started hearing Peter, Paul, and Mary, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Ian and Sylvia, Simon and Garfunkel, etc.

two disparate comments:

1. We (in the field) used to warn people when they were going to "advanced" orgs about the minefield they had to traverse. Realize I left by 1976 because the abuse was so great. I guess it didn't get any kinder and gentler.

2.FoTi's thread is a good read, and it has readership in the 10s of thousands. It is going up the charts with a bullet.

Oh, and thanks Mark. :)

Uh, I can watch the Jerry Jeff Walker one. I think some must be compressed at a different rate than others.
