No. She already has that right through her right of privacy.

The fact is males & females are not the same. They do not have the same needs, nor do they face the same risks. The society has been faced with a legal conundrum of seeking to establish 'effective equality' between the sexes for legal purposes while maintaining traditional social distinctions customary to the society. Frankly, the problem is untenable as posed. It can not be 'solved' through legislation. At best only a 'workable' if inconsistent system can be implemented, as is presently the case.

Similarly, the question with regard to the hospitals is whether a woman desirous of SAFE MEDICAL treatment can be denied that treatment because the ONLY AVAILABLE MEDICAL FACILITY capable of performing such treatment refuses on religious grounds. As a matter of economics, religious hospitals are predominant in much of the country as they are subsidized by their respective religions. Non-religious hospitals can rarely compete economically in rural areas due to the economic disadvantages they face. As a result women throughout much of the country have their medical choices effectively limited due to the restrictive policies of particular religions, whether or not the woman is a member of that religion.

The simplest solution is to require that any medical facility be prepared to perform any lawful medical treatments without regard to specific religious affiliations. Notice that this requirement does NOT extend to licensed medical practitioners, only to the medical institutions. A medical practitioner retains the right to refuse to perform any lawful medical procedure with which she herself considers ethically unsuitable.

If a church does not wish to provide necessary medical treatments to the public of an area then they clearly have little interest in providing for the needed medical & hospital services of a region, either as a charity or otherwise. The legal requirement that a medical facility allow for the provision of all legal medical procedures is not an undue burden as these are medical facilities open to the public, and furthermore it serves as a great benefit to the community as a whole. Making such assessments is precisely what governing is about.

This is a fascinating topic. Perhaps not in the right forum but here it is.

I bolded the paragraph above because I can't come to grips with the idea of creating a legal requirement that cannot be enforced.

Not that I think many people would want it enforced, but if the hospital is bound by law to offer limited abortion services but the staff are not, then wouldn’t this be covered by any legislation that made limited pregnancy termination legal?

As a comparative notion, I’m neither for nor against homosexuality, but I wouldn’t like it made compulsory.

A woman's body is the doorway to another being entering into the game of life on planet earth. I think each woman has the responsibility of deciding if that door should be opened and the being allowed to enter the game or if it would be more detrimental for that being to come into the game via her and might be better for the being to enter through another doorway.

Ending a pregnancy is a tough issue. I think it is primarily up to the individual woman. I think she is the one, who has to make the final decision after exploring all possibilities of how either continuing the pregnancy or not will affect her, her mate, her family and the future of the child if it is born. People have many different reasons for terminating a pregnancy or not. Every woman has to live with the decision she has made and either way it's not an easy decision to make. I don't think it's the govt's business to dictate to a woman in this issue.

My opinion is abortion should never be forced on a woman. I also feel that her decision to take that route, if she chooses to do so, with safe medical procedures should not be taken away from her either. In living life, a person has to live with their own conscience - not somebody elses..... and they will live with this decision, which ever way they choose, for the rest of their life.

That's a cogent argument. I agree.

Yes, well, at the risk of offending the religious and the politically correct among us . . . could it be that your father, being male was talking to a presumed male God?

It has often interested be; and this since I first looked at the religion thing some 60 years ago, that men and women actually consider their relationships with/to God differently. Of course, that's probably because the Bible as passed down to us was written my (idiot) males who positioned women as secondary to males :duh: . . .

I have often reflected on what an idiotically, destructive proposition that notion of women being secondary to males is. Personally, I don't think it takes much smarts or observational powers to see that we are actually equal partners in this game of life; if with slightly different roles.

RogerB

My father was not religious....he hated religion and when I asked him about it he said that religion caused all the wars we've ever had. He never spoke of God other than one time, when I asked him, he told me he was an agnostic. He also never said any more about this higher power that he turned his problems over to. He refused to discuss religion, politics or money with anybody.....he said that was his policy.

That's interesting ....what you say about men and woman considering relationships with God differently. I never thought about that before. The concept of God that I was raised with as a child was that of a male figure..(my mother took me to church once in a while when I was very small).

I never conceived of God being in a female image. But if what they preach is that ......God created us in HIS image, then we would all be males or else God is both male and female, but that idea was never put forth. Either way, by the time I was 10 or 11 my prayers were never answered so I decided there was no God to pray to and it was all just somebody's imagination. I quit praying and got mad at the Bible....I tried reading it, but I couldn't understand it....it just seemed like a bunch of gobbldy gook to me.

I think God who was supposed to be good and answer a child's prayers was closer to the concept of Santa Claus who was supposed to answer a kids wishes for Christmas, when I was a child. If God wasn't going to listen to me and answer my prayers, I wasn't going to give HIM any of my time anymore.

I had no answer to where all this stuff came from in the physical universe or why I was here or how things happened. I used to lay in bed and wave my arm around in the air and wonder how I did that....I couldn't see how I made my arm move.. What was the connection between me and this body? How did my arm move just because I wanted it to? :confused2:

I didn't find out my dad's relationship to whatever he turned over his problems to until I was grown, and he never had any more to say about that except that he believed in some sort of higher power.

And...yeh, I've seen a lot of males looking down their noses at women and at me, thinking and acting as if women are inferior, which sometimes made me feel bad about having a female body and wishing that I wasn't a woman. Men are generally stronger physically and more inclined to tackle the physical problems of life in business, building and brute force and many hang together to maintain their superiority against females and keep them down, if possible. And...if these men don't appreciate or value women for what they have to offer, a woman can end up feeling very inferior, very squashed and often not liking themselves for their own values and even wishing that they themselves didn't exist, because they are so miserable. How this would relate to the concept of God, I don't know. I do know that I hate being in the business world with men, and haven't had very good experiences with them personally either. I've come to the conclusion that trusting them is the wrong thing to do, and I hate life being this way. It's upsetting..... makes me very sad. :bigcry:

I also want to say that I think the make up of a man and a woman are so very different that it makes it difficult for them to understand one another since they each experience life so differently.

hi lickey!

Great to have you post here, William!!

It appears that you have pondered a great deal about this issue and looked at it from all sides. You know much more about it than I do!

It seems to me that the issue boils down to 3 basic major questions. First is the unborn fetus a viable spiritual being or just a collections of cells at the time of abortion? This question is paramount because it determines whether murder or some lower harmonic thereof, is being committed.

The next question is whether the Federal Government should be involved in this issue. The third issue is the right for a woman to do whatever she wants with her own body.

On question #1, that is where uncertainty lies with many people while religious people are positive in one sense and others are equally certain that no form or harmonic of murder is being committed. This is really the crux of the issue. When does the spirit or soul enter and take command of the organism?

My own opinion is that the spirit does not assume control until shortly before birth. That and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee. We do know that beings have recordings of pre natal incidents well before birth. I believe this feeling is held by traditional medicine including psychiatry and not just be Hubbard or New Age and Eastern religions. Still these, memories may only be cellular recordings and not spiritual. I don't know so I won't comment anymore.

On the right of the Federal Government to rule over abortion decisions, I do not feel that this is one of the areas which the Federal Gorvernment should be involved with. I believe that it is a states rights issue, as it was before Roe vs. Wade and I think that it should remain a states rights issue. The law really had to be stretched beyond acceptable limits to rule that this is a Federal matter. The Founders of this country, who wrote the constitution probably turned over in their graves when this decision was made.

On the woman's rights thing, men can only have an opinion but as you say, men should not be deciding that matter for women. My opinion is that women must have control over what happens with their own bodies. The one thing which would limit them the way I see it, which again is just my uninformed opinion, is that the fetus is not a part of the woman's body but is a separate organism existing inside the woman's body. There again, that is where the debate is going to center.

So once again in points #1 and #3 it boils down to whether a viable and nascent spiritual being does exist at the time of the abortion. Not too many pro choice adherents would go along with pro choice if they knew that there was a real life there which was being snuffed out but pro choice people feel that only an unwanted collection of cells is being destroyed.

That brings up the final point. If the woman's health is in jeopardy in any way, the woman must be given the right to choose abortion in all cases. Tthat is my 2 cents. I am not an authority but did want to make some common sense contribution just to thank William for posting here.
Lakey

roe v. wade ain't gonna go away. but i do favor the states rights position.

as to question #1...umm...could we get god who is god the living god to take the witness stand?

personnally i'm quite cetain it's not just a glob of tissue in there but as the nature of the spirit is notoriously unresponsive to the scientific method my testimony carries the same weight as joseph mengele's.

yeah. a woman's right to her own body. like i said, i will not press for the overturn of roe v. wade BUT EVERY GODDAM FUKKIN' CELL IN MY BODY SCREAMS "MURDER!"

i luv ya sweetheart, i got nothin' but compassion for ya if do it or if ya done it.

but...

dagnabbit...

it stings.

but let's do all we can to affirm and protect a woman's right to choose life.

and thank you for your warm words lakey.

I guess I heard or learned it wrong.....so it's OUR likeness rather than HIS likeness. Thanks.

I've also wondered about that 28 day suffering......that's another thing that made me wish I wasn't a woman. And why the blazes would a man want that? I've never seen a man enjoy it either. :grouch:

... if the obama initiative is made law, the catholics will close their hospitals. ...

Then they shouldn't be in the 'business' of providing medical facilities to the public at large. If they do close their hospitals, then in those areas not served by other medical facilities it is not unlikely that local governments would use their constitutional power of 'eminent domain' to acquire those facilities and have them re-opened. Personally, I doubt the catholic church is willing to lose their assets on that basis. :D

... they and i refuse to consider abortion the moral equivalent of removing a splinter from a thumb.

Well goody for you both. How do you feel about the contrary proposition of requring a woman to risk her life, health, and future bearing a child she does not want? Personally I don't consider anyone has the right to insist that a woman carry a child to term against her will. That effectively denies a woman control of her own body.

Nope. That's a grammatical 'misunderstood' on your part.

The use of the first person plural is also common as the 'imperial we'. Monarchs, deities, etc., when speaking on their own are presumed to be speaking for all, hence the traditional use of the plural form. This construct dates back to at LEAST the time of the Caesars in the west.

A singular deity as 'divine emperor' would nonetheless be accorded the traditional plural form due to his exulted social position.

BTW, the term 'image' is also subject to quite a bit of interpretation in the process of translation. It needn't necessarily imply a copy of the 'form & feature' variety. Other interpretations are possible.

This is kind of fun, but while I watched it, with all the attention on the earthquakes in Japan, I wondered what it would be like if we all had this and an earthquake hit. I notice that some of the glass is flexible......I wonder if they will make windows of this in the future that won't break. Interesting what the future might hold if the planet doesn't shake apart or drown in tsunamis or succumb to violent storms of some kind or get hit by a comet or some other astral force.

Sorry, this video wouldn't embed for some reason, so you'll have to click on the link to watch it.

Years ago....back around '79 I remember meeting a Scientologist in LA who was working for a company that had developed a tech to make a building material for walls that was flexible, kind of like rubber that would withstand a huge earthquake. He was promoting it to 3rd world countries but wasn't having any luck trying to sell it to the U.S. because he said the labor unions didn't want it......it was a kind of prefab thing that was a lot less expensive to make and only took about 1/4 of the time to build with and would put a lot of men out of work, so the powers that be in the construction industry nixed it, according to him. Did anyone else here ever run into this person? He had done the OT Levels, had been in the SO and had been granted permission to leave the SO by LRH to pursue this project. I never saw him again and never knew what happened with his project.

Commercials about contraception have all but disappeared. Mom is radically anti-abortion and I have for the first time seen photos of partial birth terminations recently. We can transplant a heart and sew a severed arm back on connecting the nerves and restore sight to the elderly with brilliant new surgeries but we cannot responsibly prevent a sperm from meeting an egg? We don't want to be that responsible it seems. Why should we when in many cases the consequences fall on somebody else.

There is NO security like there is for being poor and having custodial rights of a child. Not any more. It used to be a respected, a highly respected role, now public sympathies are being played to the hilt. Nothing is as contagious as success. I absolutely could not believe some of the stories by tax preparers about their clients amts received from Earned Income Credits. No receipts were asked for. No proof of having been employed ever. No determination to check on the facts. No checking to see if children were claimed in duplicate. No effort to see how old an individual was that the social security number belonged to or that it was a REAL SS#. IRS has been instructed by the federal govt to use kid gloves and lay off. In a Cspan broadcast I witnessed in Jan of 2010 the supreme court justice was appalled to find out from an IRS rep that the IRS had 'no power of math' allocated to them to determine such fraud. How many back when put a gun to their head in bygone days over a terror of what the IRS would do to them. We've obviously thought the IRS had quite an unlimited scope of power to destroy us somewhere in time.

This will make your jaw drop. (see links) It's estimated at an almost 30 percent rate of fraud. Going after the Earned Income Credit. Families swapping kids, parents each claiming singularly the same dependents, using fake SS numbers. The IRS is NOT supposed to check on the validity. I don't understand why we feel it is fine to play with monopoly money regarding this. The biggest crime is that it has kept minimum wage low for college kids and the elderly based on the fact that those who struggle with families will always get thousands of dollars extra for having made the effort to work even part time. You only get this 'credit' for taking a low wage job if you have custodial rights of children. In the projects children claimed as dependents have been shared amongst households insuring at least 3 dependents each allowing for maximum IRS child credits. It takes a village to raise a child? You can say your third, fourth, or fifth kids are living in any household with any friend or relative that gets them also an extra 5,000 in their tax return. Documents are seldom if ever asked for or scrutinized for fraud.

There is a loan classification status for those getting the EITC reliably. Our govt sanctioned banks to consider the voucher as proof of income for immigrants and backed loans made for homes if they would consider these poor families on lending applications. These vouchers were for RALs. Refund Anticipation Loans. Buy a house or buy a car months before your IRS refund is due....money you get back though you never paid in a dime. Who would finance a house on such a deal?

Again we see proof that Mark A. Baker thinks he is the only person on the planet who knows everything and the rest of us are deluded and have completely misconstrued the simplest stuff.

Also in Genesis:

“Behold, the man has become like one of US, knowing good and evil..." [Who is he telling to behold?]

and:

“Come, let US go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech..." [Who is he telling to come with him?]

If it is the Royal "we", why the hell is he talking to himself so much and asking himself to go with himself?

You are either a know-all bastard or you have no idea how to write a paragraph that doesn't annoy people.

Either way if I knew you personally, I'm convinced I would have decked you by now.

LTG - I don't have a dog in this race but the English verses which you quote are just translations. Have you taken that into account? Sometimes, in languages, idioms are difficult to translate. I know that Steinbeck's novel, "Grapes of Wrath" was translated as "The Angry Grape" in Japanese. Going from English to Japanese can be difficult.

Believe me, I am not saying you are wrong. I don't have an opinion on this matter. It would be interesting to have a panel of readers who know the Ancient original language of the Bible read these passages and give a summary of their translations. I just wondered if you have taken the quality of the translation to English into account and verified its accuracy.

Actually I understand your point and it is valid. Unfortunately I am limited to English.

The Bibles that we have in English are all translated from Hebrew and Aramaic and they could be totally screwed up, although many more scholarly than I seem to have agreed on the texts.

I believe that the majority of Christians read the English translations and many are convince this is the word of God, so knowing no better, I have to accept it as writ.

A Christian mate tells me that Satan originally meant friend and was incorrectly translated to mean the devil or Lucifer or fallen angel.

My original post, although acurately indicating what is written in the King James' Bible and others, was meant in fun and it just irks me that Baker loves to make other's wrong.

yes, we all normally think of this as a right. but we now have an actual case where it was violated. and no, if the obama initiative is made law, the catholics will close their hospitals. they and i refuse to consider abortion the moral equivalent of removing a splinter from a thumb.

In the greater Orlando area most of the hospitals are run by the Seventh Day Adventists. There is a Humana Hospital, an Arnold Palmer Hospital for Women and Children, and the network of 4 or 5 huge FLORIDA HOSPITALS. These last are run by the Adventists. If you call in the middle of the night and ask if it is too late to take your morning after pill they will not respond to the question but will volunteer to help you on ANY other subject you may need counseling on. Sheeeeeeeesh.

This is odd because although they have held their ground as a PRIVATE hospital in suburban areas they are no longer able to turn the uninsured away. The emergency rooms in some of the Florida hospitals have now become primarily occupied with black and hispanic clients. How can you avoid handling the human issues of miscarriage due to..... let's say, addiction and not wanting it to happen again. It would be just as immoral for them to refer you to a planned parenthood center. :noevil:

I can understand their saying they do not want to perform an abortion or do a scrape, but to not answer questions that lay heavy on the mind regarding knowledge of the condition of the uterine wall so as not to promote the growth and attachment of an embryo...

LTG - Thanks for the response. I highlighted in blue two of your key paragraphs and will comment on each:

First blue paragraph: I can see that you have to go with the King James version. Dennis Prager the radio talk show host comments on these types of things often. He is Jewish and quite well versed in the Bible and knows Hebrew.

The biblical commandment which Christians quote as "Though shalt not Kill!" according to Prager should be quoted as "Though shalt not Murder". I believe he said that that difference was the only difference in the Jewish and Christian versions of the Ten Commandments except possibly the order the commandments are given in.

Clearly "Though shalt not Kill!" is not a valid commandment. There are many instances where killing is necessary. If a madman was holding a machine gun and threatening to shoot up a plane in the air and cause it to crash and I was behind that madman with a hand gun, I would kill him. It is often necessary to kill in a war when one is defending their country. Heavens, in the Old Testament, David killed Goliath and is celebrated for that. Then there are mercy killings where someone is killed because they are terminally ill and in severe pain. Animals are often killed in this manner.

The Commandment should be voiced, "Thou shalt not Murder" and yet countless numbers of Christians quote Thou shalt not Kill without thinking through what they are saying.

On your second blue paragraph: I know what you mean about Mark. He uses direct statements such as "Nope, you are wrong" and things of that nature and is pedantic on occasion. Nevertheless, the man really knows his history and is an expert on many other areas of knowledge as well. He reigns supreme when the talk goes back to the Roman Empire and the early days of Christianity plus many other times, places and cultures.

Even if one disagrees with him, you have to admit that Mark comes to the table well prepared and with a vast amount of knowledge at his command.

For example, in our recent discussion of abortions when William brought up Catholic Churches and their threat to close down if they were forced to do abortions, I instinctively had a knee jerk reaction to side with the Catholic Churches. Mark wrote convincingly for the opposite opinion and I found his arguments extremely powerful and changed my mind.

Anyway, I have a positive opinion of both you and Mark and will stay out of it if you two to duke it out any further.

Lately for some reason I can't explain, I have become addicted to frying fish. i smother everything in copious amounts of fresh Meyer lemon juice. Here in California, they grow everywhere.

Last week I fried up Catfish, Tilapia, Swai, and Mahi Mahi. I fried them up with mesquite flavoring, cajun spices (one of Paul Prudhomme's mixes), and / or fresh ground pepper.

Tonight, I hit Safeway (a big chain of grocery stores) and bought red snapper, sole, raw shrimp, and salmon. Individually, I threw them in my black cast iron fry pan with a good supply of butter. I sprinkled pepper on the sole and the red snapper. Tonight, the sole got eaten and the rest is going to go into cioppino tomorrow.

Back when I was 20, and had my first house, I bought Craig Claiborne's "Kitchen Primer." Sole meuniére was the first fish I learned to cook that wasn't over a wood fire. To this day, my sole meuniére trumps any I've ever eaten in a restaurant. Last week I whipped it up for our daughter, when she arrived hungry. She loved it, and she is a food snob.

I know frying isn't as healthy as baking, barbequing, or raw. For some reason I've just got this yearning for fried fish. I love the process, and the product is yummy.

Tonight I did steamed asparagus to accompany the fish. It was a simple and perfect meal.
