Love it FoTi. Reminds me of the carousel at Euclid Beach amusement park on Lake Erie where I spent summers as a kid.

This is Venice Beach. My baby brother is the fat dude in the red bikini. He'll be 45 in November. He's up 20 lbs from last year's competition. Every spring he says 'This is going to be my LAST year to do competition body building." Old dogs never die. Scott is addicted to the adrenaline and camaraderie.

a communication course prototype

What this course will attempt to do is to set you on sound ground in conversations and interchanges, where what you want is an equal to converse with.

“Thou art God” - Michael Valentine Smith

The magic begins when there isn’t a domination / subjugation relationship either implied or insisted.

Part One

Students, please read these instructions, clear their meaning(s), using a dictionary and conversation regarding the activities described.

These steps can be done one at a time in round robin fashion. When you’ve reached a win on one, go to the next, and so on back to the start. Just get a little better each time through.

Step 1 A

(just looking at one another)

Two people sit, lay, or stand in a room, on a lawn, by a pool a comfortable distance apart ( 2 feet to 20 feet to begin). Look at one another. In the eyes. Make eye contact. There is another person (being) over there. Find him / her. Don’t stare. Don’t avoid eye contact. Just pleasantly look at the other person (the being), not their shirt or hair, but the essence of their being. Don’t fidget, or look at your watch, or check your e mail. Just place your full attention on your partner in this step.

Step 1 B

Do the above, Step 1 A, with the addition of one partner choosing to be coach and the other choosing to be student. Coach and student switch roles at appropriate intervals.

The coach asks “what’s happening?” “what’s that?” or a similar non introvertive question when the student blinks, grows less focused, or in some way manifests less attention directly on the coach.

The student answers briefly, and goes back to doing the activity.

If the coach doesn’t feel the student is fully comfortable, after answering the question, the coach may ask for an earlier similar circumstance or another similar occasion when the student felt that way. This can go on until the student brightens up with their answer.

Step 1 C

All of Step 1 A and B plus, now the coach attempts to throw the student off his / her focus with comments aimed at distracting or harassing the student. The student is to remain comfortable and focused on the coach, not to react to things the coach does or says.

The object is to not be thrown off your focus by anything said or done.

Step 2

(originations)

Keeping Step 1 A and B in place, student reads silently a line from a comic book, a newspaper, a book of pithy or short phrases or sayings. Owns the sentence, and says it to the coach in a natural and even way. coach asks the student to repeat the phrase if it is directed too weakly, shyly, menacingly or brusquely.

The point of this step is to be able to communicate an idea without trying to overwhelm or being too meek, but gently, equally, stating a position.

As in Step 1, the coach may ask at any time, he / she feels the student is uncomfortable or unfocused, “what’s happening?” etc.

The coach must be able to hear and understand clearly the words being said.

Step 3 A

(acknowledgements)

With the quality of attention to each other, as above, the coach now says words or phrases to the student.

The student acknowledges appropriately, what was said.

If, for example, the coach says “I am dying.”, the appropriate acknowledgement is probably not “Cool!” (I know Steve Jobs’ last words were “Oh wow, oh wow.”)

Still we are looking for an appropriate acknowledgement that what the coach said was fully heard and understood. As with the steps above, the focus of the student is on the coach and talking comfortably with the coach. The coach may steepen the gradient, by his / her choice of phrases, as is needed.

Step 3 B

When the coach is satisfied with the students ability to understand and fully acknowledge the coach’s statements, the coach now watches a bit more that the student is interested and invested (attention - wise) in the coach, not just the coach’s words.

Step 4

(move the conversation forward)

This step requires the student to be fully comfortable with Steps 1 - 3. Here the student is expected to understand the phrase, the coach’s viewpoint in saying it, and to add to the conversation.

The coach says a line, and the student responds with an appropriate acknowledgement, and then makes an intelligent reply or response. The student is expected to contribute to the conversation, not just be a bump on a log. Stupid comments, put downs, and off the wall responses are queried by the coach. Engaging questions, showing interest and sincerity are totally appropriate.

Communication is a two way street.

Step 5 A

(“8C” means “good control”

“Tone 40” means “intention without reservation”

“SCS” means “Start Change Stop.”

I don’t know why. As Tevia, in “Fiddler on the Roof,” would say, “It’s a tradition.”)

In this step, using 8C and Tone 40, the student moves the coach around their environment, asking the coach to walk to a certain place, pick up an object, examine it, set it down, turn around, look to another area, and so on.

The coach is looking for a student to comfortably give orders and acknowledgements comfortably without trying to overwhelm the coach or be too meek in his / her orders, nor with a whiny voice. Dominating, subgugating, victimizer or victim attitudes are queried by the coach.

As the student moves the coach around the environment comfortably executing the commands easily, the coach ups the gradient by watching for indecisiveness on the part of the student. Lack of control, lack of clarity, lack of a good acknowledgement, lack of a clear gentle direction by the student are each and all queried by the coach and worked on successively.

Step 5 B
(bullbaiting and derailment)
The gradient is upped here with the coach throwing in derailments. Any time the coach doesn’t feel the student has actually handled the coach’s attempt to derail the procedure, that the student should be controlling, the coach stops the student, and they work out an agreeable “handle” to get the student back in control of the coach.

Step 5 C

This is Step A done in an environment with motion, such as a sidewalk or mall with other pedestrians, an animal corral or pen, a surf line, or crowded beach. The student is expected to keep all of the above steps in while owning the space that the coach and student are operating in. The coach is vigilant to query the student when the student doesn’t maneuver the coach around obstacles, moving people, stray frisbees and volleyballs, cars and bicycles.

The student is capable of commanding gently, with grace, the coach through moving hazards, thus owning the coach, the coach’s body, and the surrounding chaos of the physical universe.

Step D

This is all the previous steps combined with bullbaiting and derailment in the live action physical universe.

Part Two

Here you get to demonstrate what you have learned.

Clay Demos

Students demonstrate in clay:

1. spiritual being and body

each part of the communication cycle

invalidation

4. evaluation

5. 8C

6. Tone 40

7. cycle of action, SCS (Start Change Stop)

8. the meaning of the word “coaching”

Part Three

The class, as a whole defines / discusses “coaching,” and what they have learned in the class. How does it apply to life and their life, in particular?

Ultimately, you don’t need to see the other person’s eyes, but can do the steps by phone, text, or other means on far ends of the planet.

Connecting the beings without anything in between is the ultimate foundation.

I think that's dynamite!! Do you think it might be too steep of a gradient for today's average young person? There's a little more baggage out there being worn on the sleeve.

This is my favorite thread.....I enjoy the variety.

To me this is the potpourri thread....the only one on ESMB.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqhFH21Tu90

Great that you like it. That is what Carmelo and I talked about. We wanted articles with substance but also a lot of light hearted and entertaining material.

Nevertheless, Toady made an excellent point recently and that was that the really top quality articles, the creme de la creme that has been written here is next to impossible to find if you return to the thread and want to read it again. We have over 1,500 pages of posts and no index or table of contents. The search key probably offers some help but not enough.

It would be an ambitious task to organize all the top posts with an index and a table of contents. It will probably never happen but it would be a worthwhile project to work on.

Thanks.

It isn't for training auditors. It's for helping a shy guy talk to a pretty girl.

A geeky girl going for a job interview.

An actor going on auditions,

etc

Everything can be done radiantly. No need to dwell. Have a win, move on.

I just did something really dumb. I sent the Venice Muscle Beach vid to my brother and family thinking what luck I had that someone took time to film Scotty on stage. Then I looked at the username for the uploader SuperAceman007. :duh: That IS Scotty's handle. His gal used his cell phone to record and upload. I sent him his 'own' vid. :dieslaughing:

Our Cleveland Euclid Beach is closed as is Geauga Lake amusement park. BUT Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio has still lots of great coasters to take family reunions on. This is cherry.

So....who won the women's bikini contest and the men's physique?

I watched the slide presentation for two hours....I finally gave up....it's 4am. Where does it end?

Was the younger, taller fellow, in the slides on the beach, your brother's son?

No female winner that I can see filmed included in the vid.

Same for clip of men in surfer jams.

In my brother's Youtube vid it looks like that tall dark latino fellow won.
My brother did take a trophy home but I could not read what it was for.....couldn't zoom in. Thanks for watching. For my family it's all in fun. It's not about winning....any more. Scott took second twice and third once lately. He has a hip replacement handicapping him and is usually the oldest entrant these days. His girlfriend is a body builder too.

That young man is from my brothers Bible study group I think. This kid brought his wife and one year old daughter to Venice Beach for the contest.

That was MY very first Photobucket slideshow I experimentally clicked that option .... after uploading the contest to photobucket. It probably has a gazillion photos as I forgot to create a separate new album for the Muscle Beach pics. Stop when you come to the end of the beach flicks I guess.

Umm, yes . . . my lovely Sweet Virginia is not my wife . . . . maybe that's the reason we have so much fun together :p:ohmy:

As I've pointed out at times: sweet V is one of those young, strong-willed, American independent type females who refuses to marry me . . . not that I've asked her to  . . why mess with a good thing?

We do have fun together and have done so now for umm, 16 years this September.

The founder ofGinger's Gardens and Wellness Center in Costa Mesa, CA passes away at 52.

Some of you veterans on this thread may remember about 18 months ago, I was going to Ginger's Wellness Center. I made a lot of friends who were metaphysical and and involved with a variety of occult practices. I got a call from my female friend E.C. notifying me the founder and E.D. there, Ginger Lee had passed away a few days ago at age 52. They were holding a life celebration event for her at the Center tonight and E.C. invited me.

Ginger was a warm, loving, talented and spiritually aware women born of mixed race in Korea. She had a good mind and leadership abilities but in So. Korea, she was looked down on for being of mixed race - part Korean and part Pacific Islander. Ginger and her parents decided the USA was more racially tolerant than So. Korea so she was sent here in 1972 to be raised by white foster parents.

That was an eye opener to me, that the U.S. was considered more racially tolerant than South Korea in 1972!

Ginger had a bout with cancer in 2005 but was pronounced totally cured. Seven years later the cancer came back in the form of lung cancer and after about a 5 month battle when it looked like she was beating it, she suddenly succumbed.

GREAT LIFE CELEBRATION CEREMONY
Ginger's body was laid out in an open coffin at the center. There was no imbalming fluid but she was kept on dry ice. The ceremony utilized a lot of Indian music, plus a Hawaiian chant was sung and Ginger's daughter did a hula dance. A notebook was passed around for all the visitors to write in. An audio of Ginger leading a meditation was played and a video of her doing some sort of Eastern dance was shown It was a very uplifting ceremony - the best by far I have ever attended.

All my buddies were there from 2010, E.C., L.H. and Kadriya. Purple Haze was supposed to come over at 6:00 PM after a session she was giving near by but her session ran over and she did not make it.

One Interesting Bonus I ran into a guy I gave session to about 18 months ago. He stumbled into Ginger's center and was complaining of being possessed by a demon. Good old E.C. rounded him up got Ginger to book him for a session with me. Using what I know of what I know, I got the entity to leave in a session that took nearly 90 minutes. I got paid $60 and that was the only time I was ever paid with money for giving anyone a session (a few have paid with barter). I made 2 phone calls to the guy and he did not want more sessions at that time. He was there tonight, he said that the session had been very good and he wanted more but he lost my phone number and that he was praying that he would run into me again. We are set to meet next Wednesday. Experiencing the ceremony then seeing 3 old close friends, then running into this man made it a great night for me.
