Scientology gives itself credibility through it, and uses it as a misleading lead-in to acceptance of, and involvement in, Scientology.
Knowing what many of us do right now about the conduct of the CoS, it seems difficult to imagine that this publication was anything more than a disingenuous attempt by the Hubster to ingratiate Scientology into the quotidian culture.
-snip-
Does anyone have any further insights into what CoS is hoping to achieve by distributing TWTH to third-world populations?

The Way to Happiness is currently (April 2011) being distributed to the people of Cartagena, Colombia and probably to others elsewhere.
When this publication was discussed on this board in 2009 people said they felt it was borderline useful as a guide to ethical thinking for children, embarrassingly naive, drastically at odds with the home life of our dear Tubbie.
Two posters saw a deeper purpose.
Is there any evidence at all, from any country in the world, that TWTH has succeeded in softening up people into a positive acceptance of Scientology? Do numbers of converts go up after Happiness campaigns?

Many of these third-world populations have never been exposed to wonderful LRH "datums" such as, "A 'feeling of guilt' is no where near as sharp as a knife in the back or ground glass in the soup." They deserve to have a chance to be connected to Source just as we have.![]()

oooh! devilishly deserved disrespect!

If Scientology thought they could get away with it, they would have no compunctions whatsoever about editing TWTH for differing cultures to promote the surveyed buttons.
EXAMPLE: For cannibals there would be a precept about how the road to happiness is best traveled when carving out the heart of your enemies and sharing it with loved ones at dinnertime. Even that would be further edited for cannibals on the RPF who would not be allowed to eat humans until they are in a higher condition.
you know, i have always felt that regardless of what an artist's actions display, if their music is good, who the hell cares? maybe not endorse them by purchasing the cds (limewire ftw!) but i mean, ok.. i guess its a point of perception. for instance, that whole kanye west thing, made me kinda mad. i'm not one for celebrity media but i heard about it and i was like "wtf? thats so wrong" and now i cant listen to any of his music without cringing. but i hold to my statement.
TWTH book itself, i think, has some good data, despite its author. the other part of it is that NONE of it originated with that author. so what does it matter? i would probably raise my children to follow some of the points as i think they are good things to live by.
