Why is the Cof$ still around?

The whole point of this thread is to turn things upside down.

Those who are on here are generally ex Scientologists/ex Churchies, many of whom would like to see Cof$ put out of business and/or at a minimum become accountable and cease their well documented abuses of people. We can all agree that Cof$ has taken a terrible pounding of late, and that it has had pretty much of a shit-4-reputation for quite some time. Furthermore, it might very well be going out of business relatively soon, or perhaps morph into a totally different entity such as a "Scientology Lite" as discussed by J. Swift either here or on the Clambake. BUT ... Cof$ has been around for almost 60 years now, has survived numerous flaps, survived the death of its founder, has managed to purchase a shitload of really choice real estate, etc. It is therefore doing something right. I don't mean right as in right by its staff or parishoners, I mean right as in doing something right that is permitting it to survive. The question is what?????????

The CofS is like any business......What it does today doesn't have an effect until tomorrow, or what it does one year shows in the stats the next year. There's always some kind of lag.

I don't see that it's doing anything right.....but maybe the way it used to do things wasn't as bad as the way it's doing them now or in more recent years.

The "old timers" are probably the ones who are only just keeping it together, and that they maybe doing so has nothing to do with what the church is doing today.

There's a lot that shows that the church is on the way out. It's struggling. It's on a dive. It's being crippled. In the last few years and even in the last six months we've seen it clutch at straws and do bizarre things which we've never seen it do before, in order to catch another breath.

Take a look at the last sixty years. In that time period, it expanded, then it was surviving, but now it's dying........People have either woken up to or are aware of the con, and it's starving.

What keeps the mob in business? The mob is kept in business by government, plain and simple. The formula works like this ... 1) find something that people want in the way of what others would consider to be a bad habbit 2) ban it, make it illegal 3) what ever "it" is then becomes even more desireable and sought after, therefore 4) its price goes way up, enticing 5) those who see the possibility of a windfall profit, who then deal in whatever "it" is, and, since "it" is illegal, those who deal in "it" are already criminal and therefore not into fair play, free enterprise, and economic competition to the benefit of the consumer, but rather 6) use force to enforce monopoly capitalism as the business model, and, by way of keeping their turf, 7) pay the politicians, sometimes the same ones who passed the ban in the first place, who then 8) find something else to ban, and the process continues. The "it" has historically been alchohol (prohibition), marijuana, cocaine, amphetamine and methamphetamine, various halucinogens, heroin, perscription drugs, untaxed cigarettes, gambling, prostitution, etc. In short, the mob gets into whatever government fucks up for people. The mob simply takes advantage of artificially created scarcities where windfall profits can be made selling shit-4-merchandise.

I don't see the analogy to the mob with regards to what is Cof$ does that it is still alive, after all these years. Yes, right now, it seems to be dying, and, after almost 60 years of not delivering what it promised, about fucking time. Key to killing it is the internet and the internet's child (and some would say bastard child) Anonymous. The question I am asking is why has Cof$ withstood so much killing without yet having died.

Scientology may have been going for the past 60 years but it is only in the recent years that bad Scientology PR is all over the internet, the OT Levels are accessible and important Scientologists and OLs are leaving.

I have no doubt that soon we will see the fall of the Scientology Organisation to the point where this time it won't be able to pick itself up. Especially when the old timers who are keeping it going realise it's all a con.

That money is declining. But no doubt they will be around for a while.
