I think there is another way that the church will spin this documentary, which is to say that because the SP's are attacking so hard, clearly Scientology is winning. It is, after LRH policy that when SP's attack, it means Scn IS winning. Hard to believe, but they actually believe that. And with that, more and more and more regging will be done to build more Ideal Orgs because of all the people coming in droves to find out for themselves.

I'll bet there is also an internal issue coming out about handling questions people have about the documentary. They are probably tailored towards "come in and find out for yourself".

Just like in 1991 when staff (and public) were absolutely banned from reading the Times article, very likely the same will occur with this. And, with those who see it and aren't smart enough to walk away, will end up in sec checking and ethics land for a long, long time.

I think the main purpose of the COS's Volunteer Minister program is to convince the highest levels of Scientology that they are running an effective PR campaign.

I doubt anyone else thinks well of Scientology's "relief" efforts since they don't look like the real thing.

Scientology as a group assigns any failure (which would include an earthquake or tsunami) to the notion that YOU PULLED IT IN.

If the Scienos really believed in their own tech and providing relief, they'd be giving confessional auditing and having the population do O/W write-ups and assigning lower conditions.

The Volunteer Minister program is a mockery of the people who do real charity work. As such, it's disgusting.

Charity begins at home. David Miscavage should consider doing something about the severely underpaid and undernourished staff many who need medical and dental assistance.

The Church of Scientology is the opposite of a charity organization, forwarding a philosophy which "isn't for the sick or lame" and demonizes the downtrodden as "DB's".

Real charity is a sincere and wonderful thing.

In a way, you could call Scientology under Miscavage as the Golden Era of Know Best. Hubbard used to bitch about people who tried to do things their way instead of following his Pl's etc. A good example is the prohibition of using lies in PR - that it backfires.

A person I know was on course at ASHO when 9-11 went down, and Julie (the lead supe at the time) would regale the courseroom of tales of daring do by the VM's, how you could see their yellow shirts peppering the landscape of ground zero with lines of cots as they gave touch assists and locationals. He would run home after course and avidly watch the news feeds and there was nary a yellow shirt. There was a story she told of an OT running down the stairs ahead of the burning fuel -but not a peep on national news. After a few days of this - he asked himself: Why are they lying to me? And he ceased being a Scientologist.

Really, if you look across the scientology landscape after the torch was wrested from Hubbard's dying hands - is it not The Golden Era of Know Best?

This is not to say Hubbard followed his own published playbook - he was equally bad, look at hundreds of examples of this strewn across the scientology landscape, like his denying he was married to Sara, which belied the fact he was a bigamist - not bad for the most ethical religion's fearless leader...

Another wonderful video, Karen! This time you address a topic that has meaning for a "never-in" like me. One can find out quickly that Scientology's beliefs are strange, that David Miscavige is violent, that they abuse their tax-exempt status...but the ONE thing that probably makes us wogs think "well, look, they're not all bad, they're helping out at disasters" are these photo-op pics of Volunteer Ministers.

Karen explains the phony concept of "Volunteer Ministers" and the approach to actual disasters: get somebody (not the Church) like KAREN to fund the trips of people to the site; then pose for photo ops, like marching down a street in Haiti 3 days after the earthquakes with happy smiles, gold T-shirts, and a banner.

One thing that I suddenly noticed in these photos is that the T-Shirts are never dirty. They are always gleaming and neatly-pressed. Wouldn't people who were helping to dig victims from underneath rubble or, in Indonesia, uncover dead bodies and carry injured survivors to safety, look a little DIRTY? Photo-op mistake, David M! Next time issue filthy, blood-stained T-shirts to the VMS so they can at least pretend to be doing something!

Most of the photos show people bending solicitously over a survivor who is in a state of shock and touching him or her on the shoulder. Is that the famous "touch assist"? I hope they aren't also trying to pump huge doses of niacin down people...

It also made me wonder: if David Miscavige is just a simple eclesiastic with no bureaucratic responsibilties or connections, why isn't he out there WITH the Volunteer Ministers? What is he doing, this self-denying little country spiritual leader, that is more important than saving lives?

Karen also points out that, strangely, David Miscavige is never seen in photos with anyone of importance (except for his homoerotic motorcycle posturing with Tom Cruise and a probably heavily-bribed disgraced former LA sheriff.)

And the "pie" chart of the relationship of Scientology with all other religions...SKREEM! I'd think even Kool-Aid drunk Sea Org members would stop at that one and wonder. And they are improving the education of 43 MILLION children? No wonder those lies zoom by so fast whenever David M. does one of his Nuremberg-Rally-style presentations!

As I said, this Volunteer Minister business is the one part of the Scientology PR that probably warms the hearts of never-ins a bit. Thanks, thanks, Karen, for explaining it. Can someone give the URL of the report of the VM who was shocked at the pretensions?

YAY for Karen and her latest video about SLEAZY Craigslist and the barrage of hidden come-ons posted by Scilons every day!

I'm in the Red-X Brigade and try to do 1/2 hour a day. These ads go up by the hundreds! (Probably because of people at the missions like the one I saw recently in my area which had NO visitors for most of the day and was finally locked up by the reg, who went off in the only car in their spacious parking lot. If you're sitting in an empty office for hours every day you have to do SOMETHING, I guess!)

Join the Red-X brigade! Even a few minutes a day helps.

The most loathesome ads, I think, are ones where immigrants are targeted. They offer free ESL courses (no mention of Scientology) at the known Scientology locations. I'll bet the focus when they get in is not on conjugating English verbs and learning useful phrases for work and making friends.

They also aim for people who are depressed, recently divorced, who recently lost their jobs...

Craigslist is bad and unregulated to a large extent, but if enough people flag an ad as "prohibited" it goes off. Try it!

Addition: I also have a question. Whoever the Scibot in Sacramento is, he, she or it makes MASSIVE entries for these bogus classes on Craigslist. Is the Sacramento org BURSTING with new people flocking in? Are the ads having an effect?

I Red-X my own area (not so many, but regularly placed) first and then head up to the top to get the most recent. There are almost always HUGE numbers of new ads every day for Sacramento and also for the SF Bay Area.

Personal addition: a person who has houses to rent in my condo association advertises to get new tenants in Craigslist. So far the newbies have included a PTSD gun nut who was seen bursting out of an arroyo NUDE, waving a weapon (the FBI actually came around asking about him); a woman who is allergic to everything and wanted to keep her companion horse on her patio (about the size of a small bedroom); and a hoarder whose junk quickly overflowed his house and began to stack up on common property. The allergic lady hasn't paid her rent for over a year and is hunkered down suing the owner because he "disrespected her handicap" in a phone call...she records all phone calls as she is also paranoid. So that's the kind of tenants who look on Craigslist!
