Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

Dear Lakey,
I have no way to judge if what I wrote is advanced or juvenile, since I never took a physics course. I only know the above 'stuff' via shamanism (their version of journeying alternate worlds etc.) Since it is metaphysics, I can't prove any of it. Also, I have read a little bit of Kaku, and I read as of three weeks ago, a little bit of Einstein, and I am still going to read and comment on Gardner.

Thank you if it seems that I am speaking in an advanced level. I am viewing what I wrote as philosophical speculation and of course I want to continue along that vein, as long as I am not claiming to be a physicist and say something definitive. Maybe a physicist would find my views in need of correction or maybe they would see them as valid but overbroad. I have no way to know that. I did know a physicist who lived next door and he liked the things I said although he never corrected me or even clarified anything. So I can't say that he agreed or not since he revealed nothing to me. But then his employment maybe does not ever allow him to speak of those matters, so perhaps in that sense, he had nothing to say. He did however like what I had to say and the way I took it into metaphysical terrain. He was Indian and as a Hindu, the animist version of things fit SOME aspects of Hinduism. I don't remember the exact details of how the fit works although I did get the impression that there are broad areas of interest between the metaphysical and physics among some physicists today. Even if only a few.

The things I wrote above, I wrote. Yes, I authored that entire post. Those were my views of physics. Wrong or right that they may be. That was my content and I wrote it without referring to anything else, in order to answer your questions or comments. I did not copy them from anywhere.
Yes, I wrote it unassisted.

I have 100s of pages written on such ideas. But I could never publish them except speculatively since I am not sure how I could contextualize what I had to say in a way that limited itself to the actual discipline I have studied, which is philosophy. Yes, my post was about physics. All I wanted to say was to qualify that since I am not a physicist (yet anyway) I might be wrong about something, so forgive me in advance for that. I just wanted to be sure that I was not claiming to be an authority. I am more than happy to continue to discuss these things as long as everyone knows that I don't claim to be an expert on those things and that I view my comments as possibly either naive or else 'beginning' ideas based on the little I know.

I have only read two of Kaku's books, the train book, a tiny bit online from Minkowski and Carnap, and that is about it. That is my entire training in physics. So you can see why after making that complicated post I felt a bit audacious! And it's true, in life I am told that I tend to 'not see' myself clearly, in the sense I tend to think less of myself than I should. Not because I am in any way down on myself. I am merely a bit self-critical and well aware that the world is filled with those who are way smarter and that I'm nowhere near a position to boast. I am unemployed. So there is no line forming to hire me in any capacity. LOL. Just sayin'.

Oh, and you may be interested in some purple prose I wrote to Hats in response to something she had to say. There I limited myself to discussion of forces from a metaphysical standpoint. http://www.forum.exscn.net/showthre...chic-attacks&p=1036965&viewfull=1#post1036965

So Lakey, in answer to your question, I wrote what I wrote unassisted. I would never take from sources unless I quoted them and was clear as to what I wrote and what someone else wrote.

:)
Thank you for finding it interesting. I probably qualified my statements to say I was not a physicist as a knee jerk reaction since I didn't want to be attacked again for being perceived as someone who views oneself as an expert. It's only been a week since the last attack and I of course want to make sure that I'm not trying to claim to be a physics professor! Since I am not one.

I would speculate that you have a real gift for Physics as well as an intuitive understanding of it. Had you studied that, you would have fared very well. I'm amazed that you read a little here and a little there about physics, relativity, parallel universes, etc. and then were able to write what you just wrote about the subject. My hat is off to you! You are one very bright individual!!

True I have read very little....but what I have read I read very closely. Philosophical training kicks in and forces me to zero in a paragraph. I learned in philosophy how to judge what was crucial in a text I might be reading. This helps me sift through a text quickly and take something important from it. (This has nothing whatsoever to do with clearing MUs!!!!) But compared to many of my mostly male classmates when I was in school I am about the most unassuming box in the rock. It's quite amazing the brilliance of thinkers out there. That scruffy 20-something hipster on a train with a copy of Sartre under his arm may actually be a genius!

On the parallel universes, Mikio Kaku's explanation of parallel universes in the book I linked to previously is very good. And in plain English. I suppose it's for lay readers. He explains some of these concepts such as wormholes and so on as well. And gives a history of physics in relation to the topics he is discussing. That is how I discovered Feynman. Kaku mentions him in relation to a statement that for physics from the micro view we seem to have free will but from the macro we have none at all. I then a few days later found a free and fairly beat up copy of a book by Feynman. It's the funny book from when he was lead investigator for the challenger disaster. Very easy to read and hilarious too.

I know the answer to the first one but you'd have to drag it out of me.

I suspect your avatar is just a clown and a pirate and
not at the Francis Bacon level.

Gizmarelda is creating communication through me by mental séance.

This is not any of that ''Ouija Board'' weirdness ! This is the real deal to never to be revealed how it works.

I’m just the reporter of such events that she wants known about. There are things she wants known about & she is not driven by what she thinks others might want or need to hear from her. She just says what she says about what she choses to talk about at particular moment.

First off, being she says I summoned her by saying her name she wants it know that she is a Lesbian so guys need not waste their time hitting on her no matter how attractive they see her as.

Second thing she says is she doesn’t know how much or little she cares to impart so this is the first of an undetermined number of mental séances she will do as it depends on her mood at the moment & the clarity with which I mange to get her imparted thoughts to me.

She also wanted to get ' time ' out of the way.

Gizmarelda says in our terms that where she is time is a concept not dealt with but we are amusing in our mortal perception of that thing we seem to be calling time.

Now, I don’t claim to agree or disagree on the rightness / wrongness or even the degree of goodness or evilness in what she apparently believes, I’m just translating it to my bastardized version of English.

OK, so far----------------------------no good------------------------- [ or evil ]

Elaboration of a point.

She says her parents claimed they dragged her & another little girl at age 5 out from under the house naked. Of this she has no memory.

Gizmarelda does vividly remember at 14 kissing another girl & looking down her blouse ay those luscious breasts but there was no touching at that point. The got together off and on over the next 7 years. She drove halfway across the country to beg her not to marry some guy in the service. Her lover wanted to try straight. Gizmarelda felt so betrayed that all the nuances of love making she had taught would now be wasted on, of all things, a MAN !

Anyway to this day only women has she ever made love to, chased or fell in love with. She also approves of threesomes which she feels women are far more receptive to than men, unless the men are gay.

She says for whatever reason it seems gay men love to take cruises. She has never been a big cruise person herself but has gone on a few to be with a then lover.

Gizmarelda was around as a teenager for what she calls the Hot 50’s, the Free Love 60’s, the waning of the Hippie 70’s, the drug filled 80’s & so on that made her life span about as sexy as a time that could be had !

That talk of girls in short skirts with no panties, many crowded in small places to sleep. Naked comm courses in California, naked pool parties & all that made to cult environment have some perks. Seems everybody got a lot of what they wanted – even staffs !

Gizmarelda has tired herself with all this chatter & has chosen to drift back into the ether for now.

She has promised to let loose her comic skills at some future point. Not now.

The closing signature of “giz” is, of course, me. Gizmarelda thinks she can sign off as “Giz”, but, being she is not here in person but only in spirit I have – for the moment at least – declined that request until it has received the appropriate deliberations before adjunction of any such publications herewith.

I ran some regular expressions/ text recognition software on that there speech but found no Francis Bacon!
Once the split personalities reintegrate (did you say it was two or three of you) please
continue on to the next quiz question.

I'd send you off to the receptionist to pay $90 dollars for this quick consultation but I'm against
proprietary mental techs, favoring open-source.

Is your avatar based on Francis Bacon?

Give me a decent speech on Francis Bacon's art and I might just answer the Archimedes question.

My avatar was something I snatched somewhere off the 'net.

That thing deserves no mention in anything to do with Bacon.

Quickly, I'd say it fairly easy to see a Picasso influence but steeped in unresolved person issues & pain whereas - to me - Picasso always exuded a joy of life.

Bacon seem captured by sordid memories he didn't really want to reveal but he couldn't keep out of his art.

While some artists have clearly marked period in time of their art Bacon seems to roller coaster in how much he expressed as well as how he felt about it.

Picasso - although when older could be cantankerous - seems like a fun person. Then we have Bacon who while his art was extraordinary if frightening to some, we have a man whose real life didn't seem something most people would enjoy being caught up.

But, his art ? I happen in my own personal opinion tend think Bacon has yet to receive the attention he deserves.

I'm no art critic. I do know I can spend a whole of time looking at some of his works & feel he communicates to me differently than many "famous" artists ever have.

PS - I just chose my avatar on a whim. It appealed to me with some clown & some nasty. I no longer notice it. Probably due for a change.

Nice speech.

(applaud....clapping....)

For giving it I will answer the quiz question by saying that Archimedes came up with a way of measuring irregularly shaped objects (cough.)

One of my favorite philosophers, Deleuze, wrote a wonderful book on Francis Bacon. It's a book that might not make sense until one reads
a bit of Deleuze...but still worth it.

So I'd agree Bacon deserves more attention. The one I attached (above) is actually impossible to fault for its artistic merits. It's a masterpiece.
Have you ever seen Max Beckman? He is a favorite for me. Here is some Beckman....

I thought Archimedes most famous for several things:

#a - He invented the principle of the "lever" and the "fulcrum". He stated something like, "If I had a strong enough lever and a place for a fulcrum, I could move the Earth."
#b - He foreshadowed calculus by figuring out the value of "pi" to a a value of about 5 decimal places by inscribing many sided polygons into the interior of a circle.
#c - While filling his bathtub and then noticing the water overflow when he stepped in, he determined how to tell if an object was pure gold or was alloyed with lesser metals.

I think #b is his third most famous achievement, #a is second most famous achievement but his MOST famous achievement was #c because his King had commissioned him to solve this problem and when he had his epiphany, as he stepped into his tub, he was so excited that he ran through the streets of his cty, still naked, shouting "Eureka", I have found it!

Re: The old days - Aboard the Apollo - 1973

Here's a website about Archimedes' life and achievements which seems fairly comprehensive; he was clearly a genius. I was disappointed though to find that he probably didn't destroy a fleet of invading ships by focusing the rays of the sun on them (something I'd long believed);

http://www.math.nyu.edu/~crorres/Archimedes/contents.html
Thanks for the link Cat's. I followed it up with a visit to wikipedia's page on Archimedes, and the first thing I noticed there was a picture of the bust of Archidamos purporting to be Archimedes. Live and learn eh?

This I could follow.

The principle of measuring an iregular object fits within the discussion of buoyancy (Archimedes principle) since the weight of the object is always equal to the weight of the displaced water.

Some might argue that going to bed with Dolly Parton would take the cake, but I can't conceive of anything more rewarding than discovering a fundamental priciple such as Archimede's (that the weight of the object is equal to the weight of the water displaced). No wonder he supposedly ran around bollock-naked shouting about it!

And if said object were made of lead:coolwink:
