Re: Apollo

Yes, in the circles you grew up in, the words were likely casually tossed around to refer to non-Jews, just like in 1950's Alabama people used certain words to refer to black people without thinking about it.

My point was, that shaygets comes from the word for "house rodents or lizards", i.e. vermin. However your family used it in your childhood, it may not be a good idea to call somebody that word, who may know the etymology of it.

Of course, Enthetan on some level, your post is correct and I thank you for educating me. Even so, I choose to ignore it, probably for the reason which Maria states above, it is FUN to use the words in the playful way in which I have always known them. One other point, Yiddish was still a live language back in the 40's and 50's with a vast literature and lots of well known authors. Now that there is a Jewish state and Hebrew is the official language of Israel, Yiddish is a dead language. The odds of anyone knowing its etymology is small but not non exsistant as you you yourself have just proved. In summary I choose to put the FUN factor ahead of the Etymology factor but also choose to thank you for educating me on the etymology!!

Yiddish is far from a dead language, you putz.
(i kid the lkwdbids!)

My favorite Yiddish saying is "Ven di bube volt geven reder, volt ze geven a trolly bus"
(It is usually said in reply to someone saying "If only I could this.. If only I could that..."
It translates to "If my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a trolley bus."
There are a million of them, but that's my favorite.

PS. Google Ruth Wisse.
PPS. Shiksa comes from Shikkor, meaning a drunkard.
There is no shortage of pejorative terms in Yiddish to describe non-Jews as well as Jews.
It is a richly expressive and politically incorrect language of the shtetl.

Thanks Churchill! "Putz" corresponds to penis. Tweaking your translation, which is basically accurate, I would slightly revise it to: "If a grandma would be given wheels she would become a trolly bus." The English equivalent is to say, "If pigs could fly"

Shiksa coming for Shikkor, meaning drunkard seems like proper etymology to me.

On the video with the Jewish girls talking I came up with the following:

"Schmutz" means dirt.
"Goy" means Gemtile or non Jew
"JAP" means Jewish American Princess, a descriptive for a young lady who is very demanding and expects to be treated like royalty.
"verschimmelt" to me that means confused, mixed up and/or not thinking straight.
"Schlepping" means carrying or dragging around with you.
"Qvetching" means complaining and in noun form "a Qvetch" is a complainer.

P.S. Churchill, It's nice to have another person in here who knows something about this topic. I know it fairly well but am not really an expert. The back up is very appreciated!!

Lisa Sparks : aka one smokin' mamma ~!

On a lighter note . . . .;

Lisa Sparks major claim to fame is that in one 12 hour period she had sex with 919 men.

Now, if that doesn't open many lines of jokes & humor for some of you - add this fact : she did in Poland !

No tech nerds or geeks managed to get the importance of Ada Lovelace, so how about this one " Catherine of Siena " - who know who she was & her historical standing - if not significance ?

<><><><><>

Ah someone mentioned ' catholic & jewish ' as religions.

Some, like mentioning features like the " hawk nose " seem to be under the impression the jewish peoples are a race.

Which is it - religion or race.................perhaps both ?

I never really knew.

I guess someone saying what they grew with as common usage is now what they are going to continue to use no matter what the rest of the world thinks.

There are, I guess, people from the deep South who had some words in the 40's & 50's that were in very common usage that one can continue to use today although most of the rest of the world finds offensive.

I think it may have been Oprah that said " Some people can't change. They are just going to have to get old & die before their ways are gone ".

In any event, I keep hoping one day we'll all look on one another as fellow members of the human race as we move away from all these divisive & derogatory put-down type names we've come up with for one another.

How can you tell when a JAP has an orgasm ?
She drops her nail file.

How do get a JAP to stop screwing ?
Marry her.

What 2 things does a JAP covet most ?
Your Master card & your Visa Card

What does a jap double when you marry her?
Her weight.

What does a JAP cook ?
Nothing.

How many JAPs does it take to screw in a light bulb ?
Unknown as never have ever tried it yet.

PS - I never thought a JAP had to be Jewish - but if they weren't wouldn't that be an oxymoron?

PPS -An over 16 middle class jewish girl rebelling against her family, now THAT was a dream come true for a horny teenage age ( or older ) boy !

Too bad that she did not live when Wilt Chamberlin, the 7'1" all time great basketball star was living. Wilt wrote 2 books after he retired. In his first book, he wrote that he estimated that he had sex with 20,000 different women during his life. At the time he wrote that book. he was in his early to mid 40's. When you crunch the numbers, it becomes apparent that he had to have as many as 5 or 6 partners in just one night from time to time.

He has a section in his book where he tells of having sex with stewardesses in airplanes. Wilt did not own his own jet, as far as I know, and often he flew with his teammates to the various cities in the league on commercial flights in the early days of the NBA in the 1960's. He talks about having sex with a Swedish stewardess at an altitude of 30.000 feet. He says that he believed that because of his height, 7'1". he set an all time record for the highest sexual intercourse ever performed at that time. He says that since he was the tallest man in the league at that time, 7'1" or at least the tallest man in the league having sex in airline restrooms, he should have been in the Guinness book of world records since the tip of his head was 30,007' and 1" above sea level, higher than anyone other man had ever reached while having sex. I believe his Swedish partner was very tall herself, perhaps 6'1" so she held the woman's record at 30,006'1". The problem was that she did not want her name known but he did! Even so, the Guinness record book never created such a category so Wilt never got the notoriety which he desired. Still, he made it into the book scoring 100 points by himself in one single game!!

Talking about Wilt; like Wings and Chuck Norris, I always considered him a fantastic guy, really very smart and a real decent guy. He really knew how to have fun!!! One day when I was CCLA Staff around 1972 or 1973 I took a day off by myself and went down to Santa Monica and was walking on a boardwalk overlooking the beach. I saw Wilt, all alone, lying on a blanket on the sand. I was about 100 years from him, about 10 feet higher off the ground than he was. I began to stare at him to make sure it was Wilt. It was him alright, he noticed me looking at him and raised his eyes to meet mine and stared back at me. I put out admiration energy that I liked him greatly and meant him no harm. After about 10 seconds of staring at each other, he motioned with his arm for me to come down and talk to him. I was thrilled, Wilt Chamberlin was inviting me to come down and talk to him. I started to go but something stopped me, call it shyness for want of a better word. He beckoned me to come but I chickened out, finally he stopped beckoning and went back to looking out to sea. I moved away from the boardwalk and started walking back towards my car. It was a missed opportunity, a chance to meet with one of my all time sports idols and maybe become a friend or at least get some free passes to a game. I was too shy to do it; I guess that it was not my destiny meet Wilt. Nothing is gained by thinking I shoulda, I coulda. I had my chance and just did not avail myself of it. Anyway Wilt was a beautiful human being, a really great guy and one thing about that wonderful man is that he really knew how to have fun and he had all the fun he could have in his life and then some!! He was really a fantastic man!

I wasn't degenerating Panda. Maria is fixing her computer and is one finger typing. That's her last info I got.

Giz,...you behave now.

I think by degenerating the issue was giz' name. (See churchhill's post.)

Being positive and upbeat as I am, I found the silver lining. Everyone should be happy that the fried up computer means I will use less words... :)
