That's a very kind offer MrN. As a matter of fact, the neck that has the Fender machine heads is a piece of shit with respect to it's intonation, otherwise I'd just replace the newer neck with it. The newer neck is in a different league, but the machine heads are of inferior quality. Swings 'n' roundabouts eh? C'est la vie.

A neck that has problems with intonation? Huh? What, are the frets misplaced? So what? Un-fret it, sand the fingerboard down to where it is straight and even, re-fret it properly and you might have a guitar with a damn fine neck.

If it's just the un-even height of the frets, sand 'em down until they're even. 1000 grit sandpaper might be best for the beginning, but switch to 2000 or even 2500 grit ASAP.

Or is it just that you've tightened up the truss rod a bit too much?

Look what all the 440 / 432 discussion has brought forth !

I must congratulate our Leader for introducing the 440 / 432 conversation !

It seems to have brought some serious & most useful information on tuning by real professional musicians !

This has become very interesting as it gets into the subtle nuances of making an instrument perform correctly.

Hopefully soon a whole different range of instruments will be brought into the mix & an online band - if not orchestra - will be formed ( fixed? ) right here on the Apollo Thread !

Isn't that exciting ?

Actually that is a perfect picture of what philosophy wishes it was. Orderly, systematic, logical. Hubbard's swill may not be philosophy but most philosophy suffers from the same misplaced desire as Hubbard for a standardized truth. It's just that in the pecking order of screw-ups Hubbard is a bit deeper in the doo-doo than the rest of the pompous scientists up there on Laputa doing their delusional experiments on how to improve life. As if that was necessary.

Ah Ha Great minds think alike. I bought a used Fender Squire Bullet from Guitar Center for $50, put some Canadian Rylander Vintage Sound pickups in for $90 and the thing became my garage beater. When I get frustrated on some project I come in and play the blues for a few minutes to bring my blood pressure down then I'm good for another hour or so.

Now I wish I had waited to buy some Fender Texas Special pull outs for cheap. Lotta young thrashers are opting upgrade from Specials to Seymour Duncans. Its creeping elegance.

But your right, CNC has made precision in guitars plentiful. Its the metal parts tuners and bridges that are slop. The Chinese seem to go beyond tool wear out just to get quantities out the door. Tolerances suffer like mad.

The best locking tuners I have seen are the PRS lockers. They have a thumb screw that tightens down on the string so it cant slip.

PRS is one of the few who still care. Even the Korean made SE Santanas are well made.

If I could do that I'd be a very happy bunny. Doubtless I could check the internet on exactly how to do it but I'm absolutely crap at woodwork so I'm not even going to attempt it even if I had the tools - which I don't.

Last time I tried that stunt on a guitar I ended up having to refret the whole neck. DOH! (That I did manage successfully.)

No, I never had to meddle with the truss rod. Nice low action, slightly concave relief, steady as she goes.

I realize you jazzbos are technique snobs, but you know you can bend strings to get any 1/4, 1/3 or 1/5 tone you want, right? Check out Albert King sometime
